LIRS TO COMMENCE AUTOMATED COLLECTION OF CONSUMPTION TAX FOR HOTELS, RESTAURANTS AND EVENT CENTRES

Published

on

In line with global best practice in the use of technology and automated solutions, the Lagos Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has introduced recently an Electronic Revenue Assurance (ERA) System for Hotels, Restaurants, Night Clubs and Event Centres in Lagos State to elicit automatic compliance with the extant Hotel Occupancy and Restaurant Consumption Tax Law of Lagos State as amended. The law imposes a 5% Consumption Tax on all expenditures made on products and services at the hospitality outlets in line with section 2 of the Hotel Occupancy and Restaurant Consumption Law of June 2009.

The ERA System ensures financial accountability and efficiency for collecting Agents, accurate deduction and automatic, transparent remittance of consumption tax as well as rewards for consumers.

Speaking on how the newly adapted technology works, Chairman of the LIRS, Mr Ayodele Subair, stated that the Electronic Revenue Assurance System using the Electronic Fiscal Device (EFD) is a software application/device that issues invoices and receipts to consumers bearing a unique QR code, detailing the items and/or services ordered and an embedded automation of Consumption Tax remittance in real time. To protect consumers, payments and receipts generated will be tracked and monitored to verify the authenticity of receipts issued. We hereby implore owners of restaurants, hotels, nightclubs and event centres in Lagos State to embrace and comply with this new initiative not only because of the legal consequences of its violation but also for its mutual socio-economic benefits.

LIRS is determined to give back to loyal Consumption Tax payers who request for their receipts generated by collecting Agents with a reward scheme being put in place.

Reacting to the introduction of the ERA Solution to the hospitality industry, Mr. Rasheed, owner of Islanders Hotels & Suites in Lagos, agreed that the device would benefit consumers while providing an easier automated accounting solution for his business. The hotelier in his statement said we have struggled with problems of accountability in our hotel in the past with some staff of questionable character pocketing money that should be coming to the hotel for themselves. Once the ERA is installed in our hotel and with consumers requesting for their receipts through the platform, we will be able to keep an accurate account of dealings in our hotels and restaurants. More so, we will have no need to stretch our capacity in keeping records for the LIRS in order to avoid being shut down by the government for avoiding taxes since the device helps us remit Consumption Taxes automatically to the government as at when due.

Airtel AI Spam Alert tackles urgent telecom problem

Published

on

In Nigeria today, unwanted messages have evolved from a mere annoyance into a serious security risk. From deceptive investment opportunities to phony bank notifications, spam communications have transformed into complex frauds that target unsuspecting victims.

For numerous Nigerians, starting the day with several spam messages has turned into a regular occurrence. Telemarketing offers, questionable lottery prizes, and phishing schemes inundate mobile inboxes, frequently inundating users with unsolicited messages. Although some communications are simply annoying, others are designed to mislead and take advantage.

In recent years, there has been a rise in fraudulent SMS messages, where scammers mimic banks, government bodies, and reputable companies to obtain sensitive information from people. A report by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) indicates that financial fraud via mobile channels has resulted in substantial monetary losses, causing unsuspecting victims to lose millions of naira.

Consider the scenario of Adebola, a civil servant in Lagos, who got an SMS purporting to be from her bank, urging her to click a link and refresh her account information. Just moments after complying, she noticed that her account had been breached, resulting in thousands of naira being withdrawn before she could respond. Tales such as Adebola’s emphasize the necessity for a strong approach to tackle SMS fraud and unwanted spam messages.

Airtel’s Spam Alert Service: A Historic Innovation

Acknowledging the critical necessity to tackle this problem, Airtel Nigeria, in March 2025, launched its Spam Alert Service, a creative system intended to screen spam messages before they reach users. The service utilizes Artificial Intelligence built by Airtel to examine incoming SMS, detect suspicious patterns, and alert users accordingly.

Airtel’s Spam Alert Service Works in Three Key Ways

Quick Identification: The system automatically identifies suspected spam messages.

User Alerts: When a suspected fraudulent message is detected, users receive an alert notifying them of the potential spam.

User Reporting Feature: Customers can report spam messages by forwarding them to a dedicated short code, helping Airtel enhance its spam alert mechanisms.

With the launch of the Spam Alert Service, Airtel is not only protecting its customers but also strengthening trust in mobile communication. By helping to curb SMS fraud, Airtel ensures that users can engage with their mobile devices with a much-reduced risk of falling victim to SMS scams.

According to Airtel Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer, Dinesh Balsingh, the AI Spam Alert Service demonstrates the priority the company places on user security. “We understand that spam messages are more than just an annoyance, they pose real threats to individuals and businesses. So, our Spam Alert Service is part of a broader effort to ensure a safer and more secure digital experience for our customers,” Mr Balsingh said.

An Urgent Call to Action

As Airtel takes the lead in the fight against spam and SMS fraud, mobile users must remain vigilant. Customers are encouraged to report suspicious messages and avoid clicking on links from unknown sources. Additionally, businesses must adopt best practices in digital communication to ensure their messaging systems are not exploited by fraudsters.
With initiatives like the Spam Alert Service, Airtel is setting a new standard for mobile security in Nigeria. In a world where digital threats continue to evolve, proactive measures like this ensure that users can communicate safely, free from the fear of falling victim to SMS scams.
The battle against spam and fraud is far from over, but with Airtel’s Spam Alert Service, Nigerian mobile users now have a powerful ally in safeguarding their communication channels.

Another Prophecy Fulfilled: Prophet Kingsley Aitafo’s Revelation on President Buhari’s Death

Renowned prophetic voice and spiritual leader, Prophet Kingsley Aitafo, has once again stirred global and spiritual conversations with the fulfillment of one of his recent prophecies—this time concerning the passing of a former Nigerian president.

On May 1st, the prophet reportedly received a vision, which he publicly shared on May 19th, saying:

“I saw very clearly by grace a portrait—like that of a president or ex-president—and I saw a lot of condolence messages pouring in. I can’t state which part of the world, but I saw the portrait of a leader going beyond. I tried to ignore it when it came on the 1st of May, but it kept coming again and again. Today, I say, let us pray.”

Later, on July 4th, Prophet Aitafo released another prophetic warning:

“Let’s pray very well from July till the end of the year. We don’t want to lose great names and great people in Nigeria and around the world. I mean great, great names. Let us also pray against water disasters in many places globally—heavy havoc. Let’s help China in prayer, that their nation won’t face a crisis or sudden destruction of properties and economy. Let’s pray against war in some countries and keep asking God for peace across the globe. Wildfires will be rampant in Europe and some other regions. Tinubu will emerge again in 2027. The ADC party will face internal crises.”

With recent developments aligning with these prophetic declarations, many are pointing to them as evidence of divine insight and a reminder that God still speaks through His servants.

As these events unfold, Prophet Aitafo continues to stand as a watchman on the tower—calling for prayer, repentance, and spiritual preparedness in these uncertain times.
