The Spelling Bee is a competition designed for students between the ages of 8 and 13 to inculcate the basic imperatives of effective communication, ultimately impacting improved spelling skills, development of poise, increase students’ vocabulary, pronunciation and accurate word usage.
The 2017 National Finals held in Lagos on April 27, 2017 and Miss TirenioluwaAdedipe of Ambassadors College, Ogun state emerged the champion beating 29 other finalists and over 1,500 participants nationwide. As national champion, Miss Adedipe wins an all-expense paid trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington DC, USA as a guest, plus a scholarship Fund.
TirenioluwaAdedipe won the competition on her third attempt; she was 1st runner-up at the 2016 competition, where she won a trip to Oxford University Press in the UK.
The Spelling Bee is in its fourth year and since inception in 2014, only females have emerged national champions.
The 2017 Spelling Bee Nigeria hosted spellers and schools from Lagos, Abuja, Rivers, Osun, Ogun, Oyo, Ekiti,Kwara,Gombe, Kaduna, Abia, and Akwa-Ibom as well as over 300 guests including Parents, Educators and Media personnel.
Miss FavourAgbomi of Ambassadors College, Ogun state was 1st runner-up and Mr. Emmanuel Komolafe of First Class High School, Osun state was 2nd runner-up. The 2nd and 3rd place winners will get scholarship funds as prizes.
The spelling Bee Nigeria is organized by Young educators Foundation, the franchise holders of Scripps National Spelling Bee, USA.
