In his determination to revive the dying legacy of the late Sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo in providing free education, Otunba Rotimi Paseda has organised free holiday coaching lessons for all the pupils in both primary and secondary schools in Ogun State.
According to statistics released by the Director of Media and Strategies, Paseda Legacy Foundation, Mr. Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji, no fewer than 2, 640 pupils have registered for the Free Holiday coaching lesson across the three senatorial districts of the state.
Also a total number of 30 teachers were employed to tutor the pupils in various subjects in Ogun East.
Ogunsiji explained that, about 800 pupils were registered in Ijebu-Ode centre in Day 3 of the programme, while 468 students and 236 pupils have also been registered in Omu -Ijebu, Odogbolu local government centre for both primary and secondary schools respectively.
According to Ogunsiji, over 1,000 pupils were registered in Maseka compound of Ijebu-Ode.
The PLF Media Director further emphasized that, no fewer than 130 secondary school students were registered in Ijebu-Ode alone, 76 primary and secondary school students were registered in Abeokuta centre on the very first day.
Ogunsiji stressed that, the free coaching initiative was part of effort to improve learning and engage school children during holiday period for pupils in the state public schools.
The fun-filled summer coaching organised by Paseda Legacy Foundation is also aimed at giving opportunities for children out of school to improve their literacy level and create vocational jobs for youths and teachers.
According to him, “At Paseda Legacy Foundation, we are interested in activities that will foster creativity and critical thinking. We have ensured that learning at the summer camp will take place in a fun and collaborative environment so as to inculcate reading habit in many of these children.
“we have designed the initiative to be all inclusive and fun-filled. The children will also be exposed to sporting activities during the coaching period to stabilise them brain mentally to promote environmental sustainability, good sanitation and hygiene, among others.”
He listed some of the courses to be covered during the free holiday lesson to include; English and Yoruba languages, mathematics, Science, Physical and Health Education, and other learning methods for prospective WAEC candidates.
While speaking at the flag-off Ceremony, the President, Paseda Women Forum, Mrs. Yemi Layeni told newsmen that, the initiative is keen to play a significant role in bridging any gap between the private and government school pupils in the state.
Mrs. Layeni emphasized that, the initiative was in line with the foundation’s long term educational programme, stressing that, funding of education should not be government responsibility alone.
She took a swipe at the Ogun State Government for being insincere to the educational sector of the state despite its taking a good chunk of the state budget.
