A 28-year-old man, Ugochukwu Obah, who allegedly beat his neighbour, Abosede Sunday, to pulp, was on Tuesday granted N50,000 bail by an Ojo Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
Magistrate A.A. Paul, who gave the ruling, also granted the accused one surety as part of the bail conditions.
Paul said the surety must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two-year tax payment to the Lagos State Government. Obah, a resident of Omonile Oteyi Garden Estate, Abule Ado, Lagos, is standing trial on a charge of assault.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Uche Simon, told the court that the accused, who entered a not-guilty plea, committed the offence on Nov. 2 at his residence. Simon said the accused assaulted the complainant by beating her to pulp.
He said that the assault was as a result of an argument which ensued between the accused and the complainant. Simon said efforts by other tenants to settle the dispute proved abortive as the accused jerked up the complainant and beat him to pulp.
He said the offence contravened Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Section 171 prescribes three-year jail term for assault occasioning harm. Further hearing in the case was fixed for Jan. 10.
