A Woman with a Heart of Gold: Honoring Jovita Macdonald

A Woman with a Heart of Gold: Honoring Jovita Macdonald

As I sat on the Underground train heading to Madrid today, I found myself observing the people around me, as I often do. What stood out were the African women in the carriage, their faces adorned with heavy makeup. It’s a trend that has gained momentum over the past decade, and while I have always appreciated a woman who takes care of her appearance, I couldn’t help but reflect on something deeper than just external beauty.

In my generation, we admired women who were “fine”—those with flawless features, radiating beauty. We chased after them, and when we “caught” them, we boasted. But as I looked at these women, I realized that true beauty is far more than makeup or physical appearance. What, then, is true beauty? Who is a truly beautiful woman?

A few things come to mind.

Honor is Beautiful

As I observed the women around me, I wondered how many of them, despite their striking looks, possessed the capacity to honor, particularly toward their partners. Makeup can enhance a woman’s appearance, and good looks can captivate, but without honor, true beauty is lacking. A woman who dishonors her man, no matter how stunning she may be, will quickly lose his attention. Every man is wired to respond to honor. It is one of the most attractive qualities a woman can possess.

Respect is Beautiful

We often raise our daughters with the idea that their beauty is their greatest asset, and they are celebrated for it. However, beauty should never be a pass to neglect other essential aspects of a relationship. Respect is one of those key elements. A woman who wears makeup and flaunts her beauty but is disrespectful is, in essence, unattractive. No matter how beautiful a woman may be, disrespect will eventually drive a man to seek respect elsewhere. It’s important to teach our daughters that respect is integral to healthy, lasting relationships.

Peace is Beautiful

As we age and mature, we come to understand that the most beautiful woman is not defined by her outward appearance, but by the peace she brings into her home and her relationship. A truly beautiful woman is one who offers peace and support, even in the midst of life’s struggles and her own imperfections. She is the one you seek when life has weighed you down, the one who sacrifices for the sake of harmony in the home. Beauty that brings peace is timeless.

So yes, wear your makeup, flaunt your features, but remember that true beauty comes from within. Eventually, all the external beauty fades in the eyes of a man if his partner thrives on conflict and turmoil.

As we raise our daughters, let’s emphasize the importance of honor, respect, and peace in their relationships, for these are the qualities that make a woman truly beautiful.

My journey on the train turned out to be far from boring. It was a moment of deep reflection, and I hope it serves as a reminder to us all about what true beauty really means.

This piece is dedicated to all the beautiful women in Eswatini and beyond, but most especially to my lovely wife, Jovita Ifeoma Macdonald, who turns 49 today, December 15th. May God continue to bless you.
