Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State cut a humble scene this morning as he presided over the State Executive Council meeting. As he walked into the meeting that started at around 9:10am, his usual boisterous nature was gone while he ordered that nothing political will be discussed at the meeting.
This many not be unconnected to the reported moves in certain quarters for him to honourably resign or be dishonourably impeached following the loss during Saturday governorship election of his anointed candidate, Hon. Abdulkabir Adekunle Akinlade (Triple A) of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM). Following the failure of his gamble to support the candidate of another party against that of his All Progressives Congress (APC), members of the party in the state are said to be making plans to force him to resign or be impeached.
Sources in the state say that the deputy governor, Yetunde Onanuga is being primed to take over and would soon be brought into the plan, with the state’s House of Assembly Speaker, Hon Suraj Ishola Adekunbi already said to be considering instituting impeachment proceedings, starting with the replacement of the Majority Leader, Hon Yinka Mafe who is well known to be a staunch supporter of the governor.
Since, Mafe’s defection to contest under APM, efforts by APC members, led by Deputy Speaker, Hon Kunle Oluomo to replace him has continually been blocked by the Speaker, but after seeing that the wind of power had shifted since last Saturday’s election, he’s now allegedly willing to align himself with the victors.
This may also not be unconnected to feelers that President Muhammadu Buhari had heard of the heaps of curses and insults directed at him by APM supporters at the Leme, Abeokuta secretariat of the party on Sunday when it became apparent that APC had won the elections. Many APM stalwarts were seen openly abusing and cursing the President for not allowing them a free rein on Saturday to implement their various election winning strategies.
These allegedly do not sit well with the Presidency, still smacking from the missiles thrown at President Buhari when he was in Abeokuta for campaign by APM members. The soft landing the governor is seeking to get back in the good books of his party after being suspended is now reportedly being flushed down the toilet and plans to force his resignation may just be the first of many upcoming battles for the outgoing governor.
