The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Benin Zone will tomorrow Friday join others members from branches nationwide in a protest march in Osun and Oyo state capitals to draw the attention of the public on the negelected state of Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho by government.
Addressing journalists today in Benin city, Coordinator of ASUU Benin Zone, Prof Fred Esumeh said the decision to embark on the Protests March in Osun and Oyo state capitals is to draw the attention of the public to the poor state of the institution owing to lack of funding by the government of Osun and Oyo states.
He noted that what the two states government are doing to Ladoke Akintola University is apparently to kill the education system in the states and the university in particular saying that,” Rather than address the abnormally of underfunding, the two states have since established additional universities, each in their respective states.”
“When a government and indeed an establishment engage workers, the workers deserve to be paid their wages. This is not the case in LAUTECH, where the two visitors to the university have shied away from their responsibilities and have conspired to deny the workers in that university their rights to wages. It is there our view that what is left for these visitors is to honourably resign for not meeting up with what is expected of their offices.”Esumeh said.
Prof Esumeh called on Nigerians, the good people of Oyo and Osun states and all lovers of education to urgently intervene to restore adequate funding and save LAUTECH from extinction.
He expressed the hope that the Union is thinking out other alternative actions to ensure that the interest of its members and indeed the students is protected in the unfolding avoidable crisis in LAUTECH
The meeting was attended by members from ASUU (UNIBEN) Branch, Ambrose Alli University (AAU) Ekpoma branch, Adekunle Ajasin University (AAU) Akungba-Akoko Branch , and Ondo State University of Science and Technology, (OSUSTECH) Okitipupa Branch.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), LAUTECH branch, had embarked on a two-week warning strike to draw the government of Oyo and Osun states attention to the poor state of the University as well as adequate funding of the institution.
