Bulling, Rape, Torture create fear in our homes By Ifeoma Ikem
The recent report of a 12 year old student who was bullied and tortured to death by his seniors for refusing to join the confraternity group has created a lot of fear and worries in many homes whose children are in the boarding school .
Reacting on the incident, the Convener, Speak Up Nigeria, Amb. Steve Nwose, has called on moral revival across schools in Nigeria both day and boarding school.
Nwose condemned the news coming from schools especially the private saying that more than four cases of such have been recorded lately.
He said that it has become obvious that the learning environment in Nigeria is gradually turning into a lion’s den where students are bullied, raped and tortured to death.
The Ambassador pointed out that parents need to pay close attention to the activities of their children and wards.
“As a parent, you are the first teacher of defense, you must imbue your children with the right values.
“If they deviate from those values, you have to redirect them because what is happening in our society today has become a source of concern to everyone”.
He stressed the need for all parents to stand up and combat the menace, starting from the homes because charity begins at home.
“We need to create time to check on our children, visit them unannounced, move around their rooms, check friends they move out with, where and what particular places they go to.
“Our children should bring good reputations to us and Nigeria at large, a good name is better than riches, he added.
According to him, ‘I remember during my days in secondary school, our parents were the ones that reported us to our seniors who were our school fathers or mothers whenever we did something wrong.
He noted that the part of the training our children need is to give respect to elders.
“We need to retract our steps, we Africans have moral values, every parent needs to advise his/her children that when you want to correct someone it must not be by violent.
