We Never Sacked 1,500 Workers – MTN Denies Report

    mtn-nigeria-office-e1445855772538

MTN Nigeria, Monday denied sacking some of its contract staff as reported in some national dailies recently.

Some newspaper and online publications alleged that MTN Nigeria had laid off some of its contract staff, particularly those that work at the telecommunications call centres. The reports claimed that many of the contract staff were given their disengagement letters Wednesday.

The reports also claimed that some of MTN workers in Apapa branch, had their salaries reduced from N120,000 to N40,000 a month and were asked to continue working at their Ibadan office, if they were still interested in the job..

However, in a reaction, MTN said the reports were untrue.

Responding to the reports, MTN Executive, Amina Oyagbola, said; “The reports are incorrect. The second phase of a change-in-vendor process took place last week, offering interested workers the opportunity to join the new call centres owned and operated by the vendor; ISON BPO.

MTN signed an outsourcing contract with ISON BPO Limited in 2015, following a competitive bid process. Indeed, MTN’s call centre operations were outsourced to independent third party agencies since 2008, as part of continued efforts to improve the efficiency and quality of customer service delivery in MTN. This is in line with global best practice for organisations in our industry.”.

Also, ISON Group CEO, Pravin Kumar said: “We have been managing MTN’s call centres since last year when the first phase of the transition was carried out, with the second phase taking place at this time.
“We were pleased to have emerged as the new partner to deliver cost-effective solutions, adopting state-of-the-art technology that supports world-class customer service.

The drive for efficient customer service delivery without compromising on quality within prevailing economic realities comes with structural adjustments and we work to balance this with the need to ensure the sustainability of our operations. We have continued to engage with those who are interested in taking up the opportunity to work with ISON under agreed terms.

At ISON, we remain committed to delivering outsourcing solutions to our clients that also provide thousands of job opportunities to members of the communities in which we operate”.

How Tinubu ordered us to Join Alliance For Democracy (AD) – APC Chieftain, Bola Ilori reveals

    bola_ahmed_tinubu

A former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, Hon. Bola Ilori has said the National leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu was the one who instructed them to join the Alliance for Democracy.

According to Ilori, Tinubu’s decision was taken following the way he was treated on the party’s governorship primary election which was upheld on September 3, by the national executive committee members, led by Chief John Oyegun.

It will be recalled that Tinubu had been reportedly supporting one of the aspirants, Mr. Segun Abraham to become the party’s candidate, ahead of the November 26, gubernatorial election in Ondo State.

But, his anointed aspirant came second with 635 votes, while Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, was declared winner with 669 votes.

Ilori, who is a stunched supporter of another aspirant, Chief Olusola Oke was said to have raised alarm over alleged padding of the delegates’ list.

But their action failed as the APC NWC threw out the report of the Appeal panel on the ground that the committee did a shady job.

However, Oke has defected to AD and is expected to fly the flag of the party in the coming poll.

Ilori, who spoke on TVC political programme said ”I don’t know APC before; it was Asiwaju Tinubu that said we should move to APC and we did.

“He has said AD is the option now; even If he said AA we won’t look back before we move to the party.

“All they are doing in the National headquarters of the party is Anti-Tinubu policies; not in Ondo alone but also in Kogi, Edo, Ogun and other parts of the country.

“Let Oyegun resign first and the problem of the party will be drastically reduced.

“Some people said it is because I want to be deputy governor at all cost. No! No! that is not true, we are fighting for what is not right.

“The younger generation of the party is bitter with what is happening in the party, we don’t have option than to move out.

“Some people are using president Buhari’s name to do the evil but I don’t know why the President kept silent.

“Someone who keeps silent in a situation like this, it is either the person is a coward or confused.

‘Nigeria’s economic recession is affecting other West African countries’ – President of ECOWAS reveals

    13133

The current economic recession in Nigeria is affecting not just the country but other countries in West Africa.

Speaking on this Mr Marcel de Souza, the President of the ECOWAS commission, said that the recession being experienced in Nigeria has a negative impact on the sub-region’s overall economic performance.
While presenting the community status report at the ongoing second ordinary session of the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja on Tuesday, October 4, De Souza who was represented by the commission’s vice president, Mr Edward Singhateh revealed this.

He also revealed how Nigeria’s recession was affecting the general Gross Domestic Product (GDP), saying that the sub-region’s GDP had declined to three per cent in 2016 from 5.6 per cent in 2013.
Since Nigeria’s economy represents two thirds of the sub-region’s GDP, this was to be expected. He also explained that Nigeria’s GDP had dropped to 2.3 per cent in 2016 from 5.4 per cent in 2013, one of the lowest in the sub-region.

Speaking on the reason behind the reduction, De Souza explained that the drop in Nigeria’s growth rate was due to the reduction in oil prices.

He said that The Gambia also had a reduction in its growth rate to 2.3 per cent from 4.8 per cent in 2013. Liberia and Cape Verde, he said, had a growth rate of 2.5 and 2.9 per cent respectively from 8.1 and one per cent respectively.

Cote d’Ivoire was the member state with the highest growth rate from 9.3 per cent in 2013 to 9.8 per cent in 2016. While some other member states have experienced a growth rate of between 4.5 per cent and 6.6 per cent in 2016 against 3.3 per cent to 13 percent in 2013.

Speaking on Sierra Leone, he said: “The decline in Sierra Leone’s growth rate from 13 per cent to 21.5 per cent was mainly due to the negative impact of the Ebola Virus Disease on the country.’’

Meanwhile, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Court of Justice has declared the arrest and detention of former national security adviser Sambo Dasuki by the Nigerian government as unlawful. The court also ordered that a fine be paid to Dasuki.

Ruling on the case brought against the federal government before it by Dasuki over his continued detention on Tuesday, October 4, the court said the government’s action was arbitrary and anti-democratic.

How i bought Police Uniform, I.D Card for N500 to impersonate – Culprit reveals

    nigeria-police-recruitment-2016

A National Diploma holder of a polytechnic in Delta State, Anene Odikose, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for impersonation.

A police uniform, an identity card bearing his name and a Honda car were said to have been recovered from him by operatives attached to the Anti-Robbery Squad of the Agbado division.

It was  learnt that the team apprehended 31-year-old Odikose on Monday during a stop-and-search at a checkpoint on Matogun Road, Oke-Aro, in the Ifo Local Government Area of the state, where he lives.

The suspect, who hails from Aniocha North, Delta State, had reportedly hid under the Force to defraud and harass unsuspecting members of the public before luck ran out on him.

In a chat with our correspondent, Odikose said he was dismissed in 2011 while undergoing training at the police college in Rivers State.

He said the shame of returning home made him to approach a police friend, who assisted him in obtaining the uniform and the ID card after he paid N500.

He said, “I am an ND holder in Business Administration. I was enlisted in the police in October 2011. During the 15-month training at the police college in Rivers State, some officers came from Abuja to screen us. Unfortunately, I was dismissed on the grounds of physical fitness.

“When I left the college, I was shy to go back to the village and tell my people that I had been disqualified. I went to live with a brother in Asaba (Delta State).

“When my friends completed the training, I met with one of them, Henry, who was posted to Calabar, Cross River State. He collected N500 from me and helped me process a police ID card. He also gave me a police uniform.”

Odikose, however, denied using the ID card and the uniform to commit crime, saying he only tendered the ID card at checkpoints to evade police interrogation whenever he drove out his car, whose documents were incomplete.

“I came to Lagos in 2014. I was working as a security guard and a driver around Isolo (Lagos State). I got the ID card to avoid being intimidated on the road when I am driving. I have never used it to commit crime. I am a focused person. It was very unfortunate that I find myself in this kind of situation.

“I had never shown the ID card to policemen until that day. All I want is mercy. I have two children and a wife to fend for,” he added.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the case would be charged to court after investigation.

He said, “At about 10.50am, a team of anti-robbery policemen on routine patrol around Oke-Aro, Matogun area, intercepted a Honda Civic with number plate, BW891LSR, driven by the suspect. He identified himself as a serving policeman and presented a Nigeria Police Force constable warrant ID card. On interrogation, it was discovered that he was a fake policeman.

“Operatives conducted a search in his apartment, which led to the recovery of a police uniform, three police belts, one police headdress with crest and a police training manual. He will be charged to court after investigation.”

RECESSION : President Buhari advertises two Presidential aircraft for sale

    presidential-fleet

Finally, President Muhammadu Buhari has given approval for the sale of two presidential aircraft, a Falcon 7x executive jet and Hawker 4000 from the Presidential Air Fleet, PAF. This was in the fulfilment of his 2015 election campaign promises of selling off many of the airplanes to reduce cost if elected as president. More of the aircraft would also be sold in the coming days.

Recall that Controversy had trailed the promise in the past as to whether the president would live up to his words. Presidency sources confirmed that PAF contains 10 aircrafts which affected the nation’s revenue. The aircraft included Boeing Business Jet (Boeing 737-800 or AirForce One), one Gulfstream 550, one Gulfstream V (Gulfstream 500), two Falcons 7X, one Hawker Sidley 4000, two AgustaWestland AW 139 helicopters and two AgustaWestland AW 101 helicopters. In readiness to dispose the machines, the presidency yesterday put out some advertorial, announcing the sales. Reacting afterwards to the authenticity of the advertorials, the Senior Special Assistant on media and publicity to president Buhari, Mallam Grana Shehu said that indeed, the president made the approval for the sale. He recalled that it was in line with the APC election campaign promises in 2015, stressing that the development would help save more money for the country. “The newspaper advertisements for the sale of two Presidential aircraft, a Falcon 7x executive jet and Hawker 4000 were duly authorised by the Presidency. “This is in line with the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari that aircraft in the Presidential air fleet be reduced to cut down on waste. “When he campaigned to be President, the then APC candidate Muhammadu Buhari, if you recall, promised to look at the presidential air fleet with view to cutting down on waste. “His directive to a government committee on this assignment is that he liked to see a compact and reliable aircraft for the safe airlift of the President, the Vice President and other government officials that go on special missions. “This exercise is by no means complete. “I am sure the Commander of the Presidential air fleet will any time from now, call you to a ceremony at which he will hand over some other aircraft to the Airforce for their operations”, Shehu explained in a statement yesterday.

My Greatest Regret is not being able to work with the late Bukky Ajayi – Actor, ADELEYE ADESHILE

    img-20160331-wa00111

Adeleye Adeshile aka Kuti is an actor who does Yoruba and also English-speaking movie if needed. He speaks with Osho Oluwatosin on what drew him into acting and, among other things, his greatest regret

How has it been since you started acting?

Well, it has been stressful, gainful. It hasn’t been very easy, we get to face challenges but being a man, I’ve been able to scale through. We just have to manage ourselves.

So far, what have been the challenges?

If I want to start mentioning the challenges I’ve encountered in the movie industry, I won’t be able to finish all. But the irony of the whole thing is that I’ve faced so many and I’ve been trying to avoid so many too. But to God be the glory, I was able to manage it all; though it hasn’t been easy. So many ridicules, talkaway, back-bites, so much mockery; that’s why I said I don’t want to go into details. But I thank God.

How do you see the issue of piracy in this industry?

Well, I think piracy is part of us already. I think we haven’t been able to manage piracy the way we ought to. I think we should have people in charge of controlling all those things but our industry is so large, they didn’t discover any loophole that will help us manage these pirate people, so I think we can manage it if our marketers are really ready to work along with actors. It can be reduced through marketers. They should look at the rate at which they are doing their mass production. Or we also can do much movies, and bring down the prices because viewers love to go for cheaper movies. If the marketers can reduce the price, increase their outlets, it will control piracy.

Take us through your educational line.

I read small ooooo. I studied civil engineering at YABATECH, and proceeded to LASPOTECH to study insurance in 2001. And I moved to LASU, where I had my B.Sc in Economics and right now, I’m doing a mature course in England.

Looking at the courses you studied, what led you into acting?

Well, you know the Nigerian situation; unemployment was so tough on us then, though the present government is working on that.  But back then when we graduated, we found it so hard to secure a job so I went into modeling and I was able to cross over to acting because I’ve always wanted to be a T.V Person.

Who do you look up to in the industry?

My boss is one of them, Antar Laniyan. I like Ramsey Nouah, I love all the ladies too.

How do you handle your female fans?

Well, they are my fans. I can’t do without them, I try to give them more attention. Even when I was passing through hurdles, I still tryiedto create time for them because without them, there will be no me.

Since you’ve started your career, what is the worst scenario that you found yourself?

The worst scenario was the day I went to a location to shoot a movie, thinking the producer was going to treat me right. But after the shooting, the person gave me just peanuts and I was highly disappointed in the person. I wouldn’t blame the person because I didn’t negotiate before coming. But I expected him to do more than that. That is the worst thing that has happened and it’s still paining me till now.

Who are those you’ve worked with and those you would love to work with?

I’ve worked with almost everybody but the most painful thing is I wasn’t able to work with the late Bukky Ajayi.

While thanking Otunba Paseda for the lofty idea and philanthropist gesture,  the Chief  instructor of Ultimate Achievers Youth Academy, Daramola Samuel enjoined all well meaning Nigerians to assist the youths for a better society.

The skill acquisition entrepreneurial programme include: Beads-making, paint-making, customizing hand bag and school bag, shoe-making, make-up, cake-making, deodorant-making, insecticide-making, body and hair cream, among others.

The deceased, identified as Adewale Fakunle, who had gone to visit a friend in Tolu area of Ajegunle, was returning home at 10p.m., when he was accosted by some men suspected to be cultists.

A version of the account narrated that they attempted to forcefully collect the man’s phone and other valuables, an action he resisted, thereby leading to his being gang-beaten.

Another version had it that he gate-crashed a meeting of cultists and they reportedly ordered him to buy drinks for the group for daring to take their route.

But he resisted the order and was attacked with dangerous weapons, including broken bottles and cutlasses.

The third version said that the unsuspecting commercial bus driver walked into members of a cult group moments after they had a clash with another cult group and apparently mistaken for a member of the rival group, he was attacked.

Nigeria to face tougher times as Oil, Gas reserves diminish – NNPC reveals

    nnpc-logo

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, yesterday, painted a gloomy outlook for Nigeria’s economic fortunes, as it disclosed that the country’s crude oil and gas reserves were fast depleting. The NNPC in a statement in Abuja, therefore, begged oil and gas exploration companies, professionals and other stakeholders to focus on increasing the nation’s oil and gas reserve base to match national aspirations to increase oil production.

Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Mr. Maikanti Baru, who disclosed this when the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists, NAPE, hosted him in Abuja, also expressed readiness of the NNPC to partner with stakeholders in the oil and gas industry to grow the nation’s fast depleting reserves in order to increase productivity in the petroleum sector.

He said:  “Our national gas demand forecast to year 2020, domestic plus export, indicates a rapid growth to 15 billion Standard Cubic Feet per day (bscfd), meaning current reserves level can only sustain that production for 35 years, if we do not increase the 2bscfd gas reserves base which require three trillion cubic feet (tcf) to replace production yearly.” It was also revealed that the country’s drive for industrialization risks being truncated, as Baru stated that the country’s aspirations were to increase oil production to four million barrels per day and meet gas demand of 15 billion standard cubic feet per day, bscfd, by 2020, required for industrialization and consumption. He further lamented that less than three per cent of all oil wells drilled in the Niger Delta Basin, both onshore and swamp, were deeper than 15,000 feet, adding that a greater number of these wells had not gone beyond the 10,000 feet as a high pressure regime seemed to be a limiting factor. However, he stated that “some of our earlier drilled non-commercial holes could be turned around if we deploy requisite technologies; we need to change our perspective of risk as technology is advancing.” Baru further explained that the 2016 national average oil production of 1.9 million barrels was low, partly due to oil infrastructure vandalism. He stressed the need for stakeholders to share data and use common available resources to reduce cost of operations in the area of rig-sharing, vessel sharing and synergy in projects development, adding that this had become even expedient in this era of low oil prices and security challenges. On frontier exploration, Baru said the NNPC was progressing in exploration efforts in the Chad Basin, the Benue trough and other frontier basins to shore up the reserve base of the country. In his own presentation, NAPE President, Mr. Nosa Omorodion, said the association was ready to support NNPC in its drive to grow reserves towards increased production in all the frontier basins.

Sterling Bank launches ‘Quick Cash’ Initiative for women entrepreneurs

    sterling-bank2

Challenges faced by market women desiring access to credit has become a thing of the past as Sterling Bank Plc through its ‘One Woman’ propositionlaunched a new initiative called the “Market Women Quick Cash.” This is in partnership with Afrigrant, a Non- Governmental Organization (NGO). The new proposition is expected to promote women empowerment and capacity building.

The scheme is designed to bridge the gap between women entrepreneurs and access to funds, thus aiding the process of bringing them into the formal sector, where they can benefit from financial advisory services, capacity building and mentorship.

Disclosing this at the launch of the initiative held last weekend at the Entrepreneur Research and Development centre Kaduna, the Bank’s Managing Director, Mr. Yemi Adeola said the proposition is specifically designed to provide access to convenient savings, transaction and quick loan services for women using both self-service methods and agent banking.

Mr. Adeola who was represented by the Bank’s Company Secretary/Legal Adviser, Justina Lewa explained that the Bank adopted both methods because “we believe the future of banking resides in the hand of the customer and we must begin to drive that paradigm shift by empowering them from now. Our partnership with Afrigrants allows us bridge this gap by providing a familiar interface for the customers”.

The Bank boss explained that the significant number of women in Nigeria’s population makes it imperative to deliberately focus on their needs to ensure sustainable economic development and growth.

His words: “Adult women constitute over 50 million of Nigeria’s population and only about 31% of this population are banked according to EFInA Access to Financial Services in Nigeria Survey 2014. The business case for targeting women is simple, they are the more excluded gender. Moreso, 21.4m females (42.7% of the total female population) are financially excluded; 15 million of these women are earning income frequently. This provides a huge opportunity for structural changes within the economic and financial system if we pay attention. To enable us to make an impact for inclusion, we must reach as many women as possible”.

In her goodwill message, the Kaduna State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Rabi Abdulsalam noted the Quick Cash initiative would help government at all levels to cushion the effect of the current recession especially as it relates to access to required funds by women entrepreneurs to grow their business.

Her words: “It is on this note that l am happy with the idea of having private sector operators coming together to bring this noble innovation of giving out loans to women at 9 percent interest rate, zero collateral to enable women play active role in the economic development of the country at a time when the economy is in recession”

In her keynote address, Her Excellency Hajia Aisha Ummee El Rufai commended the Bank for coming up with the initiative which is going to transform the lives of women in the country.
