FG to train youths on post-harvest activities

The Federal Government says it will soon commence training of youths in post-harvest activities and application of agro-chemicals under its Agricultural Transformation Support Programme Phase one (ATASP-1).

The National Coordinator of ATASP-1, Mr Haruna Akwashiki, made this knownin an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday.

ATASP-1 is a programme developed by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to improve food and nutrition security.

It also seeks to generate employment and wealth creation along the rice, cassava and sorghum value chains to enhance the nation’s food security.

The national coordinator said wrong chemical application on crops had caused rejection of the nation’s beans at international markets, hence the need for the training.

He said the training was geared toward building capacity of youths to reduce post-harvest losses and encourage adequate agronomic practices in the rice, cassava and sorghum value chains.

Akwashiki added that youths to benefit from the training would be drawn from Anambra, Enugu, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa, Niger and Sokoto states, which were the participating states in the programme.

He noted that “this programme is to contribute to the agricultural development effort of the Federal Government of Nigeria under President Muhammadu Buhari.

“We trained some youths on improved seeds production and they are currently in the field.

“We are planning another training for youths on post-harvest activities and application of agro-chemical.”

He explained that the five-year programme which would end in 2019 had three components of infrastructure development, commodity value chain development and programme management.

He said that 1,300 kilometres of irrigation water canals would be constructed, of which, 280 kilometres would be in Kebbi, Sokoto; 175km, Niger; 220km, Kano; 230km, Enugu; 125km, Anambra; 75km and Jigawa; 195km, under the infrastructure development component of the programme.

Others are 1,330km of feeder roads in the seven states, 63 potable water supply and sanitation schemes, among others.

He said that the focus of the irrigation project was to reduce rice importation, boost cassava and sorghum production, as well as encourage exportation of the produce.

The national coordinator noted that building of primary schools, construction of rural markets, boreholes and health centres in the seven participating states under the programme would be completed by the end of May.

The programme is being co-funded by Federal Government and the AfDB, with government contributing 23 million dollars and the bank contributing 152 million dollars.

  • ‘Lagos state isn’t part of Yoruba Land’ – Oba Of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu drops bombshell

‘Lagos state isn’t part of Yoruba Land’ – Oba Of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu drops bombshell

Barely one week after he reportedly snubbed Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi when they met at a function, the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, has allegedly released a bombshell, saying Lagos is not part of Yoruba land.

We gathered that a statement reportedly emanated from Akiolu’s palace, detailed the historical background of Lagos and why it should not be regarded as part of Yoruba land.

The purported statement read: “Coming from the palace, with what I was told by my late paternal grandmother who is a descendant of Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi and also reading from factual Historical books, let me share this Knowledge with you all on Eko/Lagos.

“Modern day Lagos was founded by Prince Ado, the son of the Oba of Benin, Prince Ado was the first Oba of Lagos, the son of the Bini King, Prince Ado, named the town Eko until the Portuguese explorer Ruy de Segueira changed the Maritime town to Lagos, which at that time from 1942 was Portuguese expedition center down the African Coast.

“It was a major centre of the slave trade until 1851. Lagos was annexed by Britain via the Lagos treaty of cession in 1861, ending the consular period and starting the British Colonial Period. The remainder of modern day Nigeria was seized in 1886 when the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria was established in 1914 Lagos was declared its capital due to the struggle of the Bini King.

“Lagos experienced growth prior to the British Colonial rule and even more rapid growth during the Colonial rule throughout the 1960s, 70s, continued through the 80s and 90s till date. Thanks to the Awori’s, Bini’s, Yoruba’s, migrants across the nation and world at large, as no particular group of people can take the glory alone.

“Lagos is made up of Lagoons and creeks. The Lagos lagoon, Lagos Harbour, five cowne creeks, Ebute-Metta creeks, Porto-Novo creeks, New canal, Badagry creeks, Kuramo waters and Light house creeks.

“The Awori’s and Bini’s are known to be the first settlers of the Eko land. The Awori’s are speakers of a distinct dialect close to that of the Yoruba language with a rich Bini mixture. Traditionally, Awori’s were found in Ile-Ife, they were known to be the Bini’s who followed their self-exiled Prince, the first son of the Ogiso (now called Oba) of Benin Kingdom, whose step-mother was after his head.

“The exiled Benin Prince Izoduwa known to the Yorubas as Ooduwa (Oduduwa) was made ruler of the Ife people due to his powers and followers from the Great Benin-Kingdom.

“Izoduwa (Ooduwa) was made the first King of Ile-Ife in 1230 AD. His followers from his father’s Kingdom in Benin are the today’s Awori people who settled in Eko now called Lagos.

“In the 1300, the King of Benin-Empire heard from one of his traders who was a settler in Eko on how the Bini’s were treated by the Awori’s who lived in their area. Upon hearing this, the King of Benin commanded the assembling of a war expedition, led by his son, Prince Ado, which headed the settlement of the Awori’s and demanded explanation.

“On arriving Eko, Prince Ado and his Army were more than received. The Aworis asked the Bini Prince to stay and become their leader. Ado agreed on the condition that they surrender their sovereignty to the Oba of Benin, to which the people agreed. Hearing this, the King of Benin gave his permission for Prince Ado and the expedition to remain in Eko.

“The Oba of Benin sent some of his chiefs including the Eletu, Odibo, Obanikoro and others to assist his son, Oba Ado in the running of Eko.

“From the crowing of Prince Ado as the first Oba of Lagos (then called Eko), Lagos served as a major center for slave trade from which the Aworis, the Oba of Benin and his son the Oba of Lagos and all the children/descendants who took over as his successors for over four centuries supported the trade.

“The Oba of Benin was the head of the Benin Empire which are the present day Western, Southern and Eastern modern day Nigeria. The King never obliged anyone to speak the Bini language as he believed everyone was entitled to their own choice of language.

“The name Eko was given to it by the first king of Lagos, Oba Ado, the young and vibrant Prince from Benin. Eko was the land now known as Lagos Island, where the king palace was built.

“The palace is called Idugaran meaning “palace built on pepper farm” Oba Ado and the warriors from Benin together with the early Bini’s settlers in Eko and the Awori people settled in the southern part of Eko called “Isale Eko”. “Isale literally means bottom “. Must have been used to indicate downtown (as in down town Lagos)

The statement further states that: “Until the coming in of the Benin’s 1300AD , Lagos geographical boundary was Lagos mainland, Lagos Island, the seat of the Oba of Lagos then consisted of a pepper farm and fishing post. No one was living there.

“About 1450 AD some Yorubas who hailed from Isheri in Ogun-state and Ekiti were allowed by the King to settle in Eko during a war, they came in a very large numbers thereby surpassing the numbers of the Awori’s and Bini’s. (Hence Yorubas claim to own Eko due to their numbers).

“Oba Ado fell in love with a beautiful woman whose father was Awori and mother a daughter to one of the chief; they had two sons and also a daughter Erelu Kuti, who begot Ologun Kutere who later became King.

We saw actress Mercy Aigbe coughing blood with bruises all over her body- Lagos Commissioner

The Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Lola Akande, has revealed that it was disheartening to see actress Mercy Aigbe’s condition when she came to her office to report what she went through in the hands of her estrange husband, Lanre Gentry.

The Commissioner told newsmen in Lagos that the actress was coughing blood with bruises on her face and other parts of her body when she came crying for help.

According to Akande, “She was coughing blood from her nose and mouth and she had injury on her face which the doctor said she must have an operation.

“I was so angry that I need to see the face of the man that did this to her, and so we invited him and he came yesterday (Tuesday) to say his own side of the story to the official in charge of domestic violence.

“But any man that can beat a woman to a pulp like that to the extent that she is still coughing blood one week after the incident need to have his head examined.”

She said the Lagos State Government had secured a restraining order for Aigbe from any further abuse by her husband.

The commissioner further commended the courage of Aigbe for voicing out her ordeal, and urged other women going through similar situation not to keep quiet about their ordeal.

“I must commend the courage of mercy, because what she did is what other women who are victims of domestic violence out there need to do, they don’t need to hide it except they want to die there.”

  • Edwin Clark blasts Obasanjo; defends Jonathan

Edwin Clark blasts Obasanjo; defends Jonathan

Chief Edwin Clark has lashed out at former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo for comments he made about Goodluck Jonathan in Segun Adeniyi’s new book, Against the Run of Play.

In the book, Obasanjo was quoted as saying he did not support Jonathan’s re-election bid in 2015 not only because it was against he had earlier made but because he was incapable of holding on to the presidency for seeing the world through the prism of the Ijaw nation.

This Day reports that the Ijaw chieftain in his reaction said everyone had the right to support whoever they want and that Obasanjo had no right to criticise it.

He said: “In your narration in Adeniyi’s new book, there’s nothing you said which you had not said in your despicable and false and self-aggrandised book containing assertions and character which you do not possess yet you are assassinating the character and libeling of patriotic and decent leaders and people of Nigeria including the innocent late President Yar’Adua and Jonathan.

“What character has a man who was a head of state and president of a country with over 180 million people and who is now 80 years old being accused by his own eldest son, Mr. Gbenga Obasanjo, of sleeping with his wife and thereby doubting the paternity of his children and leading to the divorce of the marriage of which you did not show any remorse.

“Your eldest daughter Senator Iyabo Obasanjo whom you alleged in your book: ‘Under My Watch’ that she was been used by the government to assassinate your character. Again I ask what character has this man. However, you concluded that Iyabo fell into the trap of the government because she has the same character as her mother.

“Jonathan was my candidate and I have a right to campaign for him and there was nothing that we said to infuriate or insult Nigerians as you are falsely and maliciously impressing on Nigerians.

You said in Adeniyi’s book that the late DSP Alamieyeseigha, former governor of Bayelsa State, whom you hated and destroyed, had no reason to say ‘that there’s no vacancy in Aso Rock’ on 21st May 2013 when he was campaigning for Jonathan. “Whereas another PDP leader from Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu also stated on September 18, 2014 that there was no vacancy in Aso Rock when he was addressing youths of Niger State who wanted him to contest the Presidency.

Whereas also in 2003, Chief Anthony Anenih also declared there was no vacancy in Aso Rock because you must be returned as President of Nigeria. “The same Anenih told Atiku during his campaign for Jonathan in 2014 that there was no vacancy in Aso Rock in 2015.

As Nigerians, we are free to campaign for any candidate we believe in whether he or she is from our ethnic nationality, from our zone, from our state or the same religion as us and or political party. This is the situation all over the world.”

Clark also lashed out at Obasanjo for saying Jonahan lacked trust and honour insisting he was the architect of corruption in the country. “Nigerians who are worshipping you should re-examine themselves. What do they owe to you? You, who sold all national assets of Nigeria including the Nigerian shipping line, Nigerian Airways, Nitel, Nigeria houses and institutions, you sold everything except Aso Rock.

“You sold Delta Steel Company (DSC) through your son to the Indians who could not pay for it and manage it. Same thing you did with Ajaokuta Steel. So who are you to talk about corruption in Nigeria? You appointed your daughter as the director of a non-existing LNG in Olokola. You should re-examine yourself if you are well. No sane man will parade himself as an honest man when he knows that he is a corrupt man.

“You sold Nicon Nuga Hilton which became Transcorp Hilton to yourself and others against the advice given to you by your kitchen cabinet. You are a fellow who must not speak when decent Nigerians are speaking. You caused all the problems of Nigeria. You are the initiator of corruption in Nigeria. You masterminded it, legalised it and what corruption is today you caused it. And you pretend as if you are not corrupt.

You corrupted the National Assembly then you turned round to call them armed robbers and thieves. “What do you really want from Jonathan and the Ijaw people? Most of the various issues you raised in Olusegun Adeniyi’s book, ‘Against the Run of Play’ are mere re-visitation of the many things you did and failed to do in your eight years of mis-governance.”

  • Christian Groups To Hold Intercessory Prayers For Buhari

Christian Groups To Hold Intercessory Prayers For Buhari

The Northern Inter-Faith and Religious Organization says it has concluded plans to hold an intercessory night of prayers, supplication and thanksgiving for the nation and for President Muhammadu Buhari to mark his first two years in office.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, National Co-ordinator of the group, Bishop Musa Fomson said there is need to pray for the President’s health and ask God to strengthen him so as to enable him continue to revive the country’s economy.

He also said Nigerians need to come together and pray to God to heal the land as well as free the country from the hands of “evil men whose aim is to hold back Nigeria’s progress”.

Fomsom said prior to the 2015 elections, there were doubts and despair that overwhelmed the land, stressing that at that time, it was almost concluded that the election or its outcome will break up the country. He however said through prayers God intervened and Buhari was elected President

According to Fomson, “We are again confronted by not too pleasant situations brought about by human interference with the divine. Some persons have made it their life ambition to truncate the anti-corruption fight that the entire nation yearned for. “Their contamination of the process is evident in the frustration of investigations. We see it in the bizarre rulings in our law courts. The din of pro-corruption protesters echoes across the world. The anti-corruption crusade needs prayers.

“Our economy needs prayers too. It has taken only the grace of God and the prudence of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government to keep Nigeria from the brink economically.

We thank God for this because we did not end up like Venezuela which has similar configuration as us. While thank God for this good fortune we nonetheless recognize that our economy needs prayers.

“God has used President Buhari to seal the mouth of blood suckers who daily cause anguish to Nigerians through the instrumentality of terrorists and insurgents. They make the blood of Nigerians flow to suck in their wicked covens.

In this we again thank God for President Buhari, whose competent military chiefs have pushed back the evil.” “We however do not lose sight of the truth. These evil people are beyond the ordinary, the security breaches in Nigeria have their spiritual connections.

The renewed attacks by remnant of Boko Haram terrorists is a manifestation of spiritual manipulation to keep Nigerians in the bondage of fear. This bondage we shall break with prayer.”

He said Nigerians will be using intercessory night to pray God to  complete the healing process of the nation and Mr President.

“We invite Nigerians of all faiths to join us on this night as it is important that we pray for President Buhari’s health and quick recovery because of the many things that God is planning to use him for beyond 2019,” he said.

He revealed that the prayer night will be held at the Nyanya Prayer Ground in Abuja on the 13th of May, 2017.
