The council of Imams, Ikeja division on Sunday, 18th of November, 2018 hosted the Lagos state governorship candidate of Alliance for Democracy, High Chief Owolabi Salis popularly called Oba Mekunu at the Ikeja central mosque amidst joy and jubilation.
The event which was well attended by Muslim faithful was intended to take the case of the governance in Lagos state to God through prayers and to also pray victory for the man of the people, High Chief Owolabi Salis.
While speaking at the event, High Chief Owolabi Salis made it known that his government will be focusing on four major issues which includes housing, food, education and health and that one of the yardstick to measure a successful government is in breaching the gap between the rich and the poor
In his words “We measure successful governance in breaching the gap between the rich and the poor. The common people are not taken care of in this country compared to the developed world. In New York, the government provide housing unit not to be sold but given to the poor , that is what is called bridging the gap between the rich and poor in housing ‘’
He made it known that he has witnessed people sleeping on the streets, 6 people sleeping in one room in Lagos which needs to stop. He said the health sector has failed in the state because it has been privatized which isn’t supposed to be so because it affects the poor in getting access to health care facility.
‘’Most hospitals and mortuary are privatized which in turn affects the poor in getting accessibility to health care facility which has killed many people. Health is is a basic need, the government providing medical facility is able to bridge the gap between the rich and poor ‘’
While emphasizing on education, he frowned greatly at the situation of education in the state.
‘’According to UN, you have to provide access to education to certain level but today some people still sitting on rubber tires , bare floor in schools in Lagos state meanwhile the rich have access to quality education’’, hence, there is need for change of power.
Furthermore, he recounted the struggles and how he emerged as the Alliance for democracy candidate
“I have being in the race for more than two years now and each time I’ve faced spiritual set backs on 3 different occasions. After seeking prayers, we realized AD is the right platform for us to run the race.’’
Similarly, speaking on the involvement of Youths in politics in Lagos, he described the state as faced with systematic slavery and how some cabals have made youths tamed due to financial constraints.
‘’Lagos is faced with what we called systematic slavery which comes in different forms of thuggery , cultism, derailment of destiny of youths which is youth not getting employed after graduation because the system has suppress them.
There’s no way the youth can get into the system even with the not too young to run law . They have made financial constraints tame the youth in politics.’’
Speaking on how he will involve the religious leaders and the people in his government, he noted that he will create a world executive council in order to bring government closer to the people.
“I’ll create a world executive council across all wards which will include all religious faithful who is going to monitor all situations in a structural way”
He then donated a whooping sum of N1Million naira and prayer mats to the council of Imams.
