Cult Killing: Group recommend community policing as a possible way to end social vices in Sagamu

….appreciates Governor Abiodun’s responsiveness to the recent cult killings

The youths under the umbrella of Sagamu Students Association and Coalition of Sagamu Students Leaders Forum has recommended community policing as the possible way to bring an end to cult clashes in Sagamu area of Ogun state today 28th of September 2023.

According to the press statement jointly signed by Comrade Abdullahi Popo-ola, President, Sagamu Students Association and Comrade Waheed Olalekan Shittu, Coordinator, Coalition of Sagamu Student Leaders Forum, “Let me on a sad reflection and on behalf of thousands of indeginous Sagamu Students , read the texts of this press conference tagged “SAY NO TO CULT KILLINGS IN SAGAMU”, organized by the leadership of the Sagamu Students Association and Coalition of Sagamu Student Leaders Forum, the apex student’s body that is saddled with the responsibility, preservation and protection of the interest, well being and rights of Sagamu Students in all the tertiary institutions across the nation.”

“It indeed saddens our conscious hearts, to address this press gathering today and to talk about the peak of cult related killings in our dear town, as it has become an unavoidable shame to the entire people of Sagamu community. The high rate of crime, acts of cultism, cult related killings, drug abuse, prostitution and other social vices in Sagamu is highly worrisome and calls for more than our urgent attention and concern. This has truly and indeed got to the height of communal shame for Sagamu town among the league of communities in Nigeria.”

“Every reasonable citizens and residents of Sagamu town, must rise up against these social menace in all forms and not minding whose ox is gored. This is not the time for every concerned stakeholders to fold their arms or put up the usual and common ” I don’t care” attitudes. With all sense of communal consciousness and future fears, If we don’t collectively end these social vices now, I pray that, may it not end the peace, progress and prosperity of our dear Sagamu town and it’s environs. (May Almighty God and the gods of our land forbid bad things).”

“Without any fear or favor, it is disheartening and disgusting to say that Sagamu has become a centre field for cult related activities and killings. Government agencies, stakeholders and community leaders have come up with different ideas and way forward to end this menace but it’s very unfortunate to say, that all efforts has proved abortive and it’s seems there no solution to this menace.”

They said the rise in cult killings in Sagamu needed to be urgently addressed and tackled strategically at this conscious point, noting that there is absolute and compulsory need for every Sagamu indigenous people and residents to rise up and raise their voices against every acts of cult killings in Sagamu.
Reminding them that SAGAMU is great town blessed with many economic, business and social potentials, but this cult killings is enough to destroy and disrupt these great potential status of Sagamu Town.

Urging the Government at all levels, Security Agencies, our Oba and Baales, community Leaders, Youth Leaders and other stakeholders holders, to come together and join forces to battle cult killings and ensure a compulsory community policing strategies to work.

“Let me also use this medium to specially thank the executive Governor of Ogun State, His Excellency Prince Dapo Abiodun MFR, for his timely intervention in the recent cult fracas in Sagamu. If not, only God knows the number of lives and properties that would have been lost by now. We urge and appeal to the Governor, to save our souls in Sagamu. We also suggest that a stiff and strong punitive measures must be applied to anyone caught in the act of cult killings. We say enough is enough.
In the same vein, we also urge the leadership of the Ogun State House of Assembly, under the speakership of Rt. Hon Kunle Oluomo, to begin a process of enacting state laws against every acts of cult killings in the state. The time is NOW!” The statement reads.

They strongly suggested to the government of Ogun state the community leaders, that the introduction and adoption of Community policing agenda is the solution and way forward to actualize the peaceful Sagamu everyone craved for.
