Why I declared June 12 as new Democracy Day – President Buhari reveals

  

 

In what seems like a shock to Nigerians, President Buhari earlier today announced that June 12 which was a day meant to celebrate the victory of MKO Abiola in the 1993 elections will become the new democracy day, still in a way to honour the deceased legend

In his words

‘’Dear Nigerians, I am delighted to announce that, after due consultations, the Federal Government has decided that henceforth, June 12 will be celebrated as Democracy Day.
We have also decided to award posthumously the highest Honour in the land, GCFR, to the late Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the cancelled June 12, 1993 elections’’

According to the letter the President signed, June 12 is more symbolic to democracy than May 29 because the election then was very fair and masses expressed their democratic will than any elections so far.
