Recently, all the youths from Niger Delta converged at the Rivers State capital- Port Harcourt to match and sensitize everyone in the region on the need to eschew violence and embrace peace. The walk tagged “waka for Peace” was organized by coalition of Niger Delta Youths and Ediz Wine Bar to urge youths to lay down their arms and embrace peace and join hands with the Government towards the perfection of ending recession in the country.
In the words of Edwin Okolie Chibuzor, Chairman Project Committee, “the “waka For Peace” project would not have come at a better time than now, as you can see, we have youth representatives from all the Niger Delta States present at this walk to prove that the activities of a few, cannot be used to judge Niger Delta youths; because we are all peace loving people with tangible investments in this region and Nigeria. Be that as it may, I want to use this medium to call on the Government of the day to be honest with the ongoing negotiations with our aggrieved brothers even as we urged everyone to lay down arms and embrace peace so that we can all work together and get the economy back on track”. On the next move of the “Waka for Peace” project, Okolie revealed “we are going to all the states that make up Niger Delta to sow and nurture the seed of peace because, without peace we can never experience the development we all so- desire, in view of this, we will keep preaching peace until it becomes our way of life as a people. May I quickly add that this walk is not sponsored by any organization, politician or political party rather, the young men and women who are genuinely in love with peace sacrificed a lot for this to happen” he submitted.
The walk took the youths to the Rivers State Government House where they were received by the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Communications in Rivers, Dr Austin Tam George- who applauded the youths for the initiative even as he revealed that aside the Federal Government moves at solving youth restiveness, the Rivers State Government has extended a hand of friendship and love to youth carrying arm to come forth and embrace peace within 60 days or face the full weight of the law.
