Federal Government commences payment of former Niger Delta militants

The federal government has commenced payment of cash stipends for all former Niger Delta militants, Reuters reports.

These payments started after the federal government reduced the budget for allowance of the ex-militants.

It was gathered the Nigerian government resumed the payments to stop incessant attack on oil pipeline in the Niger Delta.

Spokesperson for the ex-militants amnesty office Piriye Kiyaramo said two months backlog for August and September have already being paid by the federal government.

He said the rest of the stipends will be paid in batches by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Each ex-militant under the amnesty programme is expected to receive N65,000 naira monthly and job training.

However, spokesperson for the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Eric Omare said the ex-militants had lamented over the negotiation process between the government and the region.

Meanwhile, an elder statesman Edwin Clark has warned that Niger Delta militias might return to the creeks and resume hostilities if the federal government holds out too long on the issue of dialogue.

Clark also warned against the scrapping of the Maritime University in Okerenkoko, Delta state.
