The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, was arrested in Owerri, the capital of Imo State. He was taken from the NLC State Council Secretariat by heavily armed policemen and transported to an undisclosed location. The incident took place on November 1st during a protest and strike in Owerri, where workers expressed their grievances over issues such as unpaid salaries and pensions.
According to reports, Ajaero was arrested at the NLC secretariat for planning to lead a protest called ‘Occupy Imo,’ despite a court order from the National Industrial Court prohibiting the NLC and TUC from protesting in the state. The Imo police command claimed that Ajaero had a heated argument with individuals who opposed the picketing of the state airport. To protect Ajaero from potential harm, the police took him into custody at the state police headquarters.
The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) strongly condemned the attack on the NLC leader and criticized the Nigerian Police Authority for not adequately protecting him. They disputed the claim that Ajaero was placed in protective custody and called for an urgent investigation into the matter by the Inspector General of Police.
CDHR emphasized the importance of protecting the rights of all Nigerians and ensuring that no one is deprived of such rights.
