The lingering crisis rocking the judiciary took a twist when the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, on Monday squashed rumours making rounds over his resignation.
Recall that Onnoghen was suspended by President Muhammadu Buhari for not declaring all his assets. He was replaced by Justice Tanko Mohammed from Bauchi state.
Onnoghen who debunked the news of his resignation via a statement signed by his media aide, Awassam Bassey, described the CJN’s rumoured resignation as “fake news circulated by mischief makers.”
The ousted CJN said the rumours were simply fake news.
Rumours of Onnoghen’s resignation had been reported in some online news portal.
President Muhammadu Buhari had suspended Onnoghen on Friday and appointed Justice Tanko Mohammed, as Acting CJN.
A statement issued by Awassam Bassey, Onnoghen’s media aide said the purported resignation was fake news being circulated by mischief makers.
According to him, mischief makers were still circulating this as there was no truth in it whatsoever.
“The Hon CJN, Hon Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, GCON, has not resigned,” he said in the statement.
