NAUS and Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU) Engage in Constructive Dialogue to Foster Understanding and Cooperation
As the representative body for over 40 million Nigerian university students, the National Association of University Students (NAUS) remains committed to protecting the rights and welfare of students nationwide.
In response to widespread concerns regarding alleged illegal raids and student victimization, my office has taken steps to mediate a recent misunderstanding between students in Ogun State and personnel of the Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU), Lagos. This statement seeks to clarify the situation and address misconceptions arising from viral videos on social media. We urge the public to rely only on verified information from credible sources.
On January 9, 2025, as part of an ongoing cyber fraud investigation, operatives of the PSFU arrested some students in the FUNAAB area following a petition alleging their involvement in fraudulent activities. The SFU’s actions were in line with their mandate to investigate and question suspects in cases of financial crimes.
To address the concerns raised by students, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, facilitated a roundtable discussion with student leaders. Furthermore, a delegation was arranged to visit the PSFU headquarters in Lagos for further clarification. These discussions were constructive and aimed at fostering better understanding between students and law enforcement agencies.
The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) remains committed to academic excellence and does not condone any form of misconduct or fraudulent activities. FUNAAB students are known for their hard work, enterprise, and contributions to the agricultural sector in Nigeria. While a few students may be under investigation, this does not reflect the values of the university as a whole.
We urge all Nigerian university students to uphold integrity, avoid fraudulent activities, and focus on personal growth, skill development, and nation-building.
NAUS remains dedicated to ensuring a safe, secure, and conducive learning environment for students across the country. We extend our appreciation to Ogun State CP Lanre Ogunlowo, the CP of the SFU, student stakeholders, sister student bodies, and the leadership of the PSFU for their cooperation in resolving this issue. We look forward to continued engagement to protect students’ rights while supporting lawful enforcement processes.
Yours in Nation Building,
Comr. Meshach Anthony Nwankwo (MESH)
Deputy National President (National and Campus Affairs), National Association of University Students (NAUS)
