Sadly, gunmen suspected to be hired assassins have killed an All Progressives Congress (APC) Local Government Chairman, Mr Sunny Ejiagwu.
The victim, who was murdered on Friday morning, was until his death the APC Chairman of Ideato North LGA of the state.
He was among the party’s Local Government Chairmen elected in the just concluded congress held early this week in the state.
According to sources, Ejiagwu was killed along the Orlu-Akokwa Road, on his way home shortly after attending a meeting at the APC Secretariat in Owerri, the state capital.
Imo State Police Command has confirmed the incident to Channels Television.
The command spokesman, Mr Andrew Enwerem, said while the police were on top of the situation, the details of the attack were still sketchy.
The Imo APC Chairman, Daniel Nwafor, also addressed reporters at the party’s secretariat shortly after the incident.
He condemned the assassination as unfortunate and unwarranted, saying it was capable of causing political chaos in the state.
Nwafor further called on the security agencies to urgently launch a manhunt for the perpetrators of the dastardly act.
He recalled that the deceased had raised fears over his safety on Thursday during one of their meetings, decrying the volatile nature of his local government.
The APC chairman, however, called on party supporters in the state to remain calm while the security agencies work to ensure the perpetrators were brought to justice.
