The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has ordered its members across the country to commence an indefinite industrial action. The leadership of the body gave the order after a extensive meeting it had at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, the Ondo State capital on Sunday, November 4th.
Speaking to newsmen, the National President of ASUU, Professor Abiodun Ogunyemi, said the union took the decision due to the poor funding of Universities in the country.
According to Ogunyemi, Universities at the moment are under funded and several appeals for an increase has been ignored by successive governments. He consequently directed all members of the union across various universities to withdraw their services, stressing that the strike would be total and indefinite.
In the same vein, the NLC has decided to embark on an indefinite strike over the minimum wage issue between the union and the federal government.
The circular, signed by its Acting General Secretary, Onyeka Chris, read: “All affiliates and workers of the United Labour Congress of Nigeria, ULC, are by this circular called to recommence indefinite nationwide strike by 00.00 hours Tuesday, November 6, 2018, until counter directives come from the congress. Total compliance without exception is expected.
