The Benin Monarch has assured the President and members of St. Maria
Goretti Old Girls Association, Benin Branch that the status and
affairs of the School would be looked into to see how the Palace could
assist in improving the standard of the institution.
Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II gave the assurance when
the Old Girls of the school was led on a courtesy visit to the Oba of
Benin by their President, Barr (Mrs.) Felicia Otaigbe.
The Oba of Benin appreciated members of the Association for coming
together to support the growth and development of their alma mater.
Oba Ewuare II expressed concern over the image of St. Maria Goretti
College, which is not as it used to be.
His Royal Majesty thanked them for making him their Grand Patron and
assured of his assistance.
The President of St. Maria Goretti Old Girls Association, Barr. (Mrs.)
Felicia Otaigbe congratulated the Oba of Benin for his ascension to
the throne and for the forthcoming first year coronation anniversary.
She commended the Oba of Benin for his interest in Agriculture in
order to engage the unemployed youths.
Barr. (Mrs.) Otaigbe informed His Royal Majesty that St. Maria Goretti
College was established by the Catholic Mission, but was taken over by
government some years ago.
She expressed dismay over the poor state of infrastructure and
facilities in the College, and called on government to return the
school to Catholic Mission in order for it to regain its lost glory.
Barr. (Mrs.) Otaigbe said the Association has built and equip
laboratories as well as instituted awards and scholarships to students
in the school.
The Oba of Benin also received the Olokpe of Okpe, HRH Oba Edogun III,
who was in the Palace to express gratitude to Omo N’Oba for the
support over the years.
He also used the opportunity to invite His Royal Majesty to the 30th
anniversary of his coronation, and solicited for Royal blessings.
His Royal Majesty commended him for acknowledging the historical
relationship between Benin Kingdom and Akoko-Edo and congratulated him
for his 30th coronation anniversary.
The Oba of Benin advised him to continue to meet the yearnings and
aspirations of his people as traditional ruler
