Pakistan seeks foreign aid over deadly floods that has killed over 900 people

Pakistan is seeking urgent global aid to mitigate flooding disasters that have killed nearly a thousand and leaves around 33 million citizens displaced.

Authorities declared a national emergency as death toll from the months of flooding continues to rise.

The flooding is triggered by erratic monsoon rains.

Devastations are mostly in the impoverished south and southwest of the country, a statement by the prime minister’s office said.

The national disaster agency said at least 937 people had been killed since mid-June during record rainfall.

More rains were expected in the regions of Sindh and Balochistan, with millions of people thought to be waiting for help in inaccessible areas.

Chief meteorologist Sardar Sarfraz said swollen rivers were destroying houses, bridges and roads.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered army troops to assist the civil administration, put hospitals on high alert and called for the international community and donor agencies for help, his office said.
