Policemen Extort N20,000 From Nigerian Youth In Lagos

Some policemen from Area H Division in Lagos have illegally detained two yet-to-be-identified young Nigerians after they refused to be extorted by the officers.

The two men and one other were illegally arrested by the officers on Sunday at Akintan Street, Mascara, Ketu area of Lagos State.

Despite not seeing anything incriminating on them, the trio were asked to pay N50,000 each.

While the two arrested young men refused to pay, the third person begged the officer and negotiated to pay N20,000, which they collected and proceeded to release him.

According to reports, the young men were assaulted, handcuffed and treated by the policemen like criminals.

“The police are now claiming that they found the boys with Indian hemp but that’s a lie. Nothing was found on those guys’ hands,” an eyewitness told reporters on Sunday.

“There were three that were arrested, but they collected money from one of them. The two other guys that were unable to pay were taken to the station. They even beat them up, they assaulted them because they couldn’t pay like the other guy. They initially demanded N50,000 from each of them.

“The policemen are now trying to frame the two others who couldn’t pay up. They threatened to transfer them to Ikeja, Lagos.”

A Twitter user, @damen222 also confirmed the incident.

Tagging the Lagos police spokesperson, Ben Hundeyin, he said, “Your men from Area H division came for a raid and arrested an innocent citizens, who came to buy biscuits and he was handcuff and forced to transfer N20,000 from his account to secure his release for doing nothing at Akintan Street, Mascara, Ketu, Lagos State.

“Two others customers has been detained in their custody as we speak.”
