Sadness rocks Kwara state as armed robbers kill policemen, residents during bank robbery

At least six policemen and six others, including residents and bank customers, have been reported killed after men of the underworld attacked about five banks in Offa, Kwara state. It was learnt that policemen and bank customers were among those killed. The robbers were said to have carried out the operation for about an hour on Thursday.

They reportedly invaded the town around 4:45pm and operated till about 5:40pm. Among the policemen killed was a man identified as Pelemo, who was expected to retire in few months’ time and a pregnant police woman. An eyewitness said that corpses of six policemen were taken away in his presence, while efforts were being made to bring out others inside the police station.

Spokesman for the police in the state, Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the robbery. Though he confirmed the causalities, he could not confirm the number of dead people and how much was stolen.

“It is true that there were attacks on some banks at Offa, but I cannot identify the banks now. I learnt that there were casualties, but I cannot confirm the number until I am briefed. But more policemen have been deployed in the area and they have restored calm,” he told a national daily.
