#HAJEMBECOMINGSERIES: The Story Of Enobong Idara Tom
#AfricaWeWant

Enobong Idara Tom is a 26-year-old entrepreneur from Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Enobong dries edible leaves like Afang, Atama and Editan and sells them to Nigerians living outside Nigeria.

She ventured into her line of business when she realized that Nigerians staying overseas were in need of indigenous edible leaves such as Afang leaf, Atama leaf, and Aditan leaf. To meet their need, she started drying the leaves and packaging them so they can store them and use them as long as they want without the fear of the leaves decaying.

Enobong started her business in 2021. Leaves such as Afang, Atama and Editan are people’s favourites especially people from Akwa Ibom State and Cross River State and so they will pay what is requested to have access to the leaves even in foreign countries where the leaves are not grown. The business is lucrative and Enobong affirms that one can make money from it. She explains that sometimes she uses forty thousand naira to purchase leaves and make double profit.

She started her business with a startup capital of fifteen thousand naira and the high point recorded in the business is her ability to send the leaves to people outside Nigeria. The low point in the business is the lack of money to expand the business.

Enobong has thought about giving up in the face of challenges especially when people mock her and say all negative things to her. However, she keeps pushing ahead.

Enobong avers that her business is stressful but fun. It has to do with going to the village to get the leaves, washing them, cutting them and finally drying them. It requires her to watch over the leaves when she is drying them so that the wind does not blow them away. She does not work alone; she engages people to work for her.
