It was a day full of uproar and wailing in Lagos when two ladies drowned at Elegushi Beach, Lekki.
The ladies, Funmi, 24, and Shola, 27, Vanguard learned, were graduates of International Relations from Covenant University, Otta, Ogun State, and were studying for their Masters in International Law and Diplomacy at the University of Lagos, UNILAG.
The deceased, who were in the company of some friends, were at the beach to celebrate the birthday of one of their friends, when an alarm was raised by one of them, who noticed a heavy tide sweeping the ladies away.
Unfortunately for them, they drowned before help could come, with some local divers saying such incidents occurred daily. One of them, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “There is never a week that at least three persons do not drown. Not just in Elegushi beach, but in Alfa Beach and others around this area. That is why picnickers are always advised to swim within the shores.”
When contacted, the South-West spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Ibrahic Farinloye, said information at his disposal revealed that the deceased were among the picnic team.
He could, however, not ascertain whether their bodies had been recovered, but assured that he would get back to this reporter when armed with detailed information.
