  • The travails of Apostle Johnson Suleiman and the inciting words of the Sultan of Sokoto (Part 2) By FFK

The travails of Apostle Johnson Suleiman and the inciting words of the Sultan of Sokoto (Part 2) By FFK

An article written by Femi-Fani Kayode. Keep reading.
President Donald J. Trump summed it up rather well when he said, in reference to the Islamist terrorists and those that derive joy from committing genocide against Christians, that “they are sneaky dirty rats. They blow up people in a shopping centres and they blow up people in a church”.
He went on to say “we are fighting sneaky rats right now that are sick and demented. And we are going to win.”
Finally he said, “the execution of Christians is no longer acceptable”.

How right President Trump is. I thank God for his life every day. With him as leader of the free world, win we shall.

Yet sadly our Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, who is undoubtedly a fine gentleman and who is a practising Pentecostal Christian, appears to be helpless and has done absolutely nothing to help and protect his own from the “sneaky dirty rats”.

Clearly he has no power and he does not have the disposition or the political will and clout to take a stand against this great evil.

The best he could do was to issue a tepid statement telling Nigerian religious and political leaders not to allow religion to drive us apart.

He did not condemn the genocide that was being perpetrated by the Fulani militias and neither did he commiserate with the families of those that were butchered or express regret about the inability of the Federal Government to prevent the carnage.

The persecution and killings of Christians appears to just goes on and on even when we have a man that is a Christian as our Acting President.

Yet consider what happens when Christian leaders complain and speak out against the mass murder, the genocide and the insidious attempt to wipe away our faith from the face of the earth.

When our Christian clerics and political leaders rise up and call on Christians to defend themselves and their families where and when the state refuses or is unable to defend them against the practitioners of radical Islamic terror and the barbaric and cruel Fulani Janjaweed militias, our government starts storming their homes, locking them up and inviting them for questioning.

President Buhari and his government is arresting, questioning, detaining and harassing those that are being subjected to ethnic cleansing and genocide on a daily basis and they are turning a blind eye to those that are inciting and doing the killing!!!

I say shame on them. And let this be made abundantly clear: no-one is intimidated or scared of arrest or even death because eventually death must come to us all.

There are at least 100 million Christians in Nigeria today and Buhari cannot kill us all or lock us all up.

To the last man and woman we will continue to call on our people and our brothers and sisters in Christ to defend themselves, their homes and their loved ones wherever and whenever they are attacked by those that hate and seek to wipe out our faith where the government of the day refuses or fails in its constitutional duty to defend and protect us.

The Christians of Nigeria will no longer behave like lambs that are silently being led to the slaughter. We will no longer be killed without a fight.

Our God and our constitution requires us to protect our own and fight back when we are attacked and that is precisely what we will do.

The great American patriot and one of the principal players in the war of independence against British colonial rule, Thomas Jefferson said,

“When injustice becomes a law, resistance becomes a duty.”

The leaders and the people of Nigeria need to learn from these profound words and take a cue from them.

Nobody likes violence and no-one wants a religious war. Peace and peaceful co-existence has always been our preference and has always been the Christian way.

However it must be clearly understood that if the radical Muslims in our midst insist on waging a bloody Jihad against us, we will not sit by idly and we will defend ourselves. Everyone must be clear on this. It would be a case of mutually assured destruction.

That is why the violence and the genocide that the Fulani militants are indulging in and perpetrating all over the north against Christians must stop.

That is why they must be arrested, prosecuted and hanged for their crimes against humanity.

His grace Prelate Sunday Ola Makinde of the Methodist Church got it right when he said,

“Suleiman should be law-abiding, let him go and face the DSS. Let us see if they will detain him and they will detain so many religious leaders in Abuja. Nigeria is greater than any religion and Nigeria is greater than anybody. The DSS should watch it. If they like, let me be the next victim. What is annoying them is that Suleiman converted from Islam to Christianity. Self-defence is permissible; they slapped our first cheek. They slapped the second cheek and we have no other cheek to turn for them. We may therefore resort to self-defence because this thing is becoming intolerable.”

The Prelate has spoken the mind of every right-thinking Christian in the country. Whatever happens to us as individuals does not matter. The only thing that matters is the defence of our people and our Church and the survival of our faith.

The Apostle Paul tells us in the Holy Bible that “to live is Christ and to die is gain”. Consequently we do not fear what any man, any government or any cruel despot and tyrant can do to us.

Rather we count it all as joy. When we are absent in the body, we are present with the Lord. As they say, Christians don’t die: they only change address.

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ was spread by the blood of the martyrs and the suffering and sacrifice of the saints.

The history of the Christian faith and the Church over the last 2000 years since the coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ is replete with examples of such suffering and sacrifice.

The matter is simple and clear: the more Christians you torment, persecute, lock up and kill, the more the glorious gospel of our Lord and master will flourish and grow. It is a deep and inexplicable mystery but it is very real.

You cannot kill Christianity. You cannot shake our faith. You cannot stop the spreading of the gospel. You cannot deny us our rights. You cannot overwhelm us. You cannot intimidate us and you cannot defeat the God that we serve.

And, like Pharaoh, some may ask “who is this God?” The answer is as follows:

He is the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the Blood of the Sprinkling, the Holy One of Israel and the I Am, That I Am.

He is the Lily of the Valley, the Rose of Sharon, the Lamb of God, the Lord of Life, the El Shaddai, the Elohim, the Adonai and the Ancient of Days.

He is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and the God of Gideon, Jeptha and Samson. He is the God of Moses, Joshua and David and the God of Daniel, Shedrack, Mishak and Abendego.

He is the solid Rock on which we stand and the holy foundation on which Peter built the Church. He is the husband of the widow and the father of the fatherless. He is the defender of the weak, the healer of the sick and the provider for the poor.

He is the Comforter whose Holy Spirit hovers like a small white dove and who roars and burns like a conquering lion and an all-consuming fire.

He is the Seven-fold Spirit of the Heavenly Hosts and the source and power of the four great winds of the earth.

He is the Man of War, the Prince of Peace, the Creator of the Universe and the Lord of Hosts.

He is the God of the Armies of Israel, the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end and the giver and taker of life.

He is the God of all flesh who holds the universe together by the power of His word. He is the slayer of Pharaoh and Herod: none can stand against Him and creation bows before Him.

That is who He is and not even one hundred million inciting words from the Sultan of Sokoto or anyone else can change that.

For the Christians of Nigeria, despite all that we see, we must always remember that He is with us and, in the end, He will make all things beautiful.

We must shed our fears and, if nothing else, we must always remember that “to live is Christ and to die is gain!!!”

May the Lord deliver His people from the rising tide of evil in our country and may He strike down those that delight in shedding the blood of His children and in crushing the bones of His servants. Shalom. (Concluded.)

Father kills twins daughter, accuses them of Witchcraft in Calabar

Operatives of the Cross River State Police Command have arrested a 40-year-old man, Anyanime Festus, who allegedly poisoned his twin daughters in Akampka Local Government Area of Cross River, because he felt they were responsible for his parents’ death.

The arrest was effected by the Divisional Police Station, Akampka, before the suspect was transferred to Police Headquarters in Calabar. The suspect allegedly gave his 11-year-old daughters a black substance, believed to be poison to drink, which led to their death on January 10 and 11. A source said: “The man told us that his daughters confessed to be witches and that he had no choice other than to kill them before they kill him. So he mixed acid with malt, took the twins to a bush path and gave them the substance to drink.” Another source, who pleaded anonymity, told Vanguard: “The twins were always wandering the streets. When brought back home by strangers, Festus usually chased them out again without food. Sometimes they were locked up and not given food for days.”

Vanguard investigation revealed that before the fateful day, the girls had been incarcerated for about three days before their father let them out under the pretence of taking them to school before he took them to a bush path and poisoned them.

    A dying girl’s revelation

An eyewitness, who craved anonymity, told Vanguard that before one of the girls died, she revealed to them that their father took them from the house to a bush path at Nyaghasan on a bike. He brought out a black substance and gave to them to drink. She said they drank it, but because the substance was bitter, she refused the second portion, but her sister drank it. According to the source, “she said after a while they started having stomach ache and complained to their father, who then pretended as if he was going to get a remedy and in the process he left them there and never came back. “Not too long after, they started feeling dizzy and then fell asleep. When she woke up and tapped her sister, she was no longer breathing. “The deceased said she had to drag her sister’s lifeless body from the bush to the road. It was in the process that a good Samaritan saw them and informed the police, who then took both of them to Akamkpa General Hospital, where she died at about 3:40a.m., January 11.

    Police

When contacted the Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo, who confirmed the incident, said since the incident happened three weeks ago, they had been on the suspect’s trail. Ugbo said: “We have apprehended the suspect; he was brought from Akamkpa this morning (Monday) to the headquarters. He confessed that he gave his daughters acid mixed with malt to drink because he had a premonition that they would kill him like they killed his parents. “He had the belief because they confessed to him that they were witches. So he carried out the dastardly act to save his life first.

‘We are keeping quite doesn’t mean we are powerless, we are all ready to die for it’- Popular Cleric, Dr Chris Okafor talks on Fulani herdsmen attack

There has been uproar in the country since last week over the planned arrest of Cleric, Apostle Suleman on his speech on Fulani Herdsmen. He told his church members to kill Fulani herdsmen whenever they see them around due to the way they also slaughter Christians in some parts of Nigeria. This made the SSS to burst into his hotel room at Ekiti and arrest him but the timely intervention of Governor Fayose foiled the arrest.

However, today, 30TH Of January, 2016, it was gathered that the SSS invited him for questioning which he honoured as a law abiding citizen.

Ever since this crisis started, a lot of fellow Christians and clerics have lend their voices  for this same cause and among them is Dr Chris Okafor -the founder, Mountain of Liberation and Miracle Ministries (MLMM) aka Liberation City, has, while lamenting the spate of killings in Kaduna said that “nobody owns this country” and that “We are keeping quiet does not mean we are powerless. We can do something, we can fight, enough is enough,  if the country doesn’t belong to all of us again, let it be divided’

Furhermore, he said  ‘’ In a country where there is law, they are killing people and nobody seems to be saying anything, whenever anyone say anything against it, they come against that person, we are all ready to die  for it’

Below is a video in which the cleric aired his views on the crisis within Kaduna and the many afflictions of Christians.

“I was trying to recoup the money I spent on setting up the printing press. I bought the four printing machines at N2.1 million each.

Why we embarked on one-week warning strike – ASUP reveals

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, on Monday began a nationwide seven-day strike over shortfall in payment of salaries and allowances among other demands.

Usman Dutse, National President of the union told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on telephone in Lagos that the warning strike would end on February 6.

According to him, the strike will affect all federal and state-owned polytechnics and colleges of technology.

“We have issued a circular directing all our members to down tools from 12.00 noon today (Monday).

“For about a year now, we have been receiving a fraction of our salary due to a cut from the budget office.

“Also, our allowances were withdrawn due to the shortfall; non-implementation of the NEEDS assessment conducted some years back.

“There are also issues of interference from the governing councils of some institutions and victimisation of our members.

“Some states like Osun, Oyo and Edo have not paid salaries for several months.

“There are also issues of establishment of Polytechnic Commission and HND/B.Sc dichotomy,’’ Dutse said.

He said that after the warning strike, the union would hold a National Executive Council meeting to decide the next line of action.

Adeyemi Aromolaran, ASUP Chairman, Yaba College of Technology chapter, Lagos, also confirmed the chapter’s readiness to comply with the directive on the national strike.

Aromolaran told NAN that the chapter would begin the strike after its congress.

“We are holding a congress now to deliberate on the issue and we are ready to comply with the directive.

“The strike is very important following recent developments in the polytechnic sector,’’ he said.

Meanwhile lecturers of the Lagos State Polytechnic, LASPOTECH, Ikorodu Chapter, complied with the strike directive.

Uthman Olayinka, General Secretary, ASUP, LASPOTECH chapter, told NAN that the strike began at noon as directed.

He said that the union had informed the management of the action and also sent a letter of notification to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State.

“A committee on strike compliance ‎has been set up in all the schools in the institution to ensure effective compliance to the strike by the union members,” he said.

Despite the national directive, some polytechnic chapters of ASUP like the Kaduna Polytechnic have said they will not join the strike.

  • Sogunle: Our Digital Branches will Improve Our Customers’ Productivity

Sogunle: Our Digital Branches will Improve Our Customers’ Productivity

Sogunle: Our Digital Branches will Improve Our Customers’ Productivity

At the official unveiling of Stanbic IBTC Bank’s digital branch at the Maryland Mall, Lagos, Deputy Managing Director, Stanbic IBTC Bank, Dr. Demola Sogunle, spoke on Stanbic IBTC Bank’s digital banking revolution and the bank’s growth strategy, among other issues. Excerpts:

Can you tell us about the new digital branch that was unveiled by Stanbic IBTC?

This is our very first fully digital branch and for us at Stanbic IBTC, this is the beginning of a new phase with regards to customer interface, the reach of our channels and access to products and services. For us in the banking industry, we believe that digital is here to stay as the future of banking, self-service environment.

What prompted the bank to embark on this initiative?

With over 80 million Nigerians are on the internet, we believe that we should be able to take value to them online whilst providing same to other Nigerians at our traditional channels. Our overarching objective is to empower the customer even further by providing him self-service options in the comfort of a branch, this means he is able to do all of his transactions with little human interaction.

What distinguishes this digital branch from any other e-branch?

It is a fully digital branch. It is an entirely paperless, self-service environment, which speaks completely, to the aspirations of the customer with a millennial mindset. So whatever you want to do, you can come into the branch, go to any of the points and you are able to pay, collect cash or make enquiries. Everything is available for you; there is very little interface with human beings. When it comes to access to internet products and services, people with millennial mindsets are very conversant with everything that has to do with self-service and internet access. We believe that we are helping the customer improve productivity through these digital branches.

No doubt the Stanbic IBTC digital branch strategy is one important way to reach the unbanked population. What other plans are in place to attract the unbanked population?

Yes it is, even though there are still over 90 million unbanked in the country, we know we have more Nigerians with SIM cards and mobile phones, which makes it easier and cheaper to reach them. What we are trying to do with mobile and internet banking is to make banking faster, more convenient and a lot easier for our clients in such a way that their banking experience is seamless. Our newly upgraded mobile app represents yet another avenue through which the unbanked can be reached. Using technology provides us with the opportunity to develop competitive products and services that will help bring the unbanked into the banking system. It is not cost effective to try to open branches in every part of the country. But the moment we deploy technology via internet and mobile banking, it becomes easier for customers, even those in places where we do not have a physical presence, to access financial products and services. It is very easy for us to do and we would continue to push the technology envelope to reach the unbanked population.

Economic challenges have negatively impacted the profitability of the financial services industry. The industry’s NPL portfolio has risen over the past three years while deposits are dropping. How has technology helped banks, Stanbic IBTC Bank specifically, to cope in this period?

Any serious business continues with a future market will have to take digitisation quite seriously. At Stanbic IBTC, we have long embraced digitalization to strengthen our operations and processes, make them more accessible, efficient and cost effective. Today’s customers demand faster services without compromising quality. With technology, the turnaround time for quality service delivery is constantly getting reduced and we are also able to bring down costs, which is very important if we must boost profitability. So, one of our coping mechanism is to fully embrace technology, which has helped us provide unmatched innovative solutions, like this digital branch, the Stanbic IBTC mobile app, our internet banking, among others. We also ensure we have a highly experienced and motivated workforce. As a result, we regularly exceed clients’ expectations. This has helped the business. If you check our nine months financial result to September 2016, we did well, in spite of the economic challenges.

In any case, there are and always will be challenges but those challenges present opportunities as well; The important thing is that as a bank we are always ready and prepared to weather the storm and come out in a stronger position. We are here to deliver services to our customers for the long haul and we are ready to go through all these challenges to fulfill our obligations and responsibilities to all stakeholders: customers, shareholders, staff members and the communities within which we operate.

Stanbic IBTC has a large customer base of multinationals, and currently there are foreign currency issues. How has the bank been coping with this?

Well we continue to try our best to satisfy our customers’ demand as much as possible to ensure their businesses do not suffer. We continue to explore genuine avenues to source for our forex. We tap into these avenues to provide forex for our clients whenever they need it. For instance, from our custody business, through Stanbic IBTC Nominee, we get forex inflows. Given the fact that we have the biggest custody business when it comes to custody business for foreign investors, we tend to see forex inflows. Our global market is also very strong in terms of trading forex and we have got our parent company, Standard Bank. We have had to combine these sources to ensure that we are able to continue to provide something that is very scarce but very important to many of our customers. We have got commitments and we are trying our best to continue to fulfill these commitments to our customers given the forex liquidity challenges.

You mobile app has been newly upgraded. Can you tell us a bit about it and the safety nets attached to this app?

It is a product  co-created with the customer; our customers and other stakeholders contributed significantly in designing it, this way, we have ensured that the app fits the precise need of our customers and as every app, we will keep updating. A lot of thoughts also went into making this app well encrypted and safe to use.  We have no doubt it is a fantastic product that we have put out there. Everyone who has used the app has commended it. The functionality of the app is impressive. You can do both banking and investment transactions on it.

Going forward, what should we expect from Stanbic IBTC?

    1. Mobile and indeed e- banking is the future of banking; Stanbic IBTC is keen to be at the cutting edge of the customer service and technology is a major way to achieve this. We would therefore continue to innovate and improve our services and ensure this is made available to our customers where ever they are.
