Coup Rocks Benin Republic as Soldiers Attack President Talon’s Residence, Seize State TV

Cotonou, Sunday — Tension engulfed Benin Republic in the early hours of Sunday as heavily armed soldiers launched what appears to be a coordinated coup attempt targeting President Patrice Talon and key state institutions.

According to credible security and diplomatic sources, gunfire erupted around President Talon’s private residence in the Le Guézo district of Cotonou at dawn, forcing residents in nearby streets to flee or take shelter indoors. Troops believed to be part of an elite military unit reportedly stormed the premises in an attempt to arrest the president. His whereabouts remained unknown at press time.

Shortly after the attack, a group of uniformed soldiers took over the national broadcaster, Office de Radiodiffusion et Télévision du Bénin (ORTB). Interrupting regular programming, the soldiers announced the dissolution of the government and declared that President Talon had been removed from power. They introduced themselves as the “Military Committee for Refoundation”, claiming their intervention was necessary to “restore order” and “protect the nation.”

The broadcast was brief, and no independent verification of the president’s status has yet been possible.

Capital on Edge

Cotonou has been thrown into confusion as military vehicles, armed checkpoints, and troops have been deployed at strategic locations. Businesses remained shut, and movement in parts of the capital was severely restricted. Residents reported hearing sporadic gunfire as loyalist forces were believed to be regrouping.

Diplomatic missions in the city issued emergency advisories, urging their nationals to stay indoors pending clarity on the situation.

Uncertain Political Future

Benin, long regarded as one of West Africa’s most stable democracies, has faced rising tensions in recent years. Analysts say Sunday’s events — if confirmed as a full-scale coup — mark the most serious challenge to Talon’s rule since he assumed office.

The attempted putsch comes months after the government announced it had foiled a previous plot involving senior political figures and members of the security establishment.

Regional Leaders Monitoring Situation

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which has struggled to manage a wave of coups across Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Niger, is expected to respond urgently. Diplomatic sources suggest that a high-level emergency meeting may be convened to assess the situation and consider possible sanctions or intervention.

Next Hours Critical

As the sun set over Cotonou on Sunday, uncertainty deepened. The military faction has yet to present President Talon to the public, fueling speculation about whether he is in hiding, in custody, or attempting to regain control.

For now, Benin stands on the edge of a political precipice, with the coming hours likely to determine whether the coup succeeds or sparks a broader confrontation between rival forces.

BREAKING: Atiku Reportedly Weighs Six-Year Single Term Presidency, Zonal Rotation Plan Ahead of 2027

ABUJA — Emerging political intelligence from the nation’s capital indicates that former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, is reportedly considering a constitutional reform agenda centred on a single six-year presidential tenure and a structured rotation of power among Nigeria’s six geo-political zones if elected president in 2027.

According to sources familiar with ongoing political consultations in Abuja, the proposal is said to draw inspiration from recommendations made during the 1994/1995 Constitutional Conference chaired by the late Justice Adolphus Karibi-Whyte under the administration of former Head of State, Sani Abacha.

The proposal, which has yet to receive any official confirmation from Atiku’s camp, allegedly includes a draft constitutional amendment expected to be presented before the 11th National Assembly scheduled for inauguration in June 2027.

Insiders claim the amendment seeks to institutionalise a rotational presidency among the six geo-political zones, with each region occupying the presidency for a single six-year term. Proponents of the initiative argue that the arrangement could strengthen national unity, inclusion, and equitable representation across the federation.

Under the reported framework, the North-East — Atiku’s home region — would commence the new rotational cycle in 2027, while subsequent transitions would move across other geo-political zones in a predetermined order.

Political analysts backing the proposal say the initiative aligns with Section 14(3) of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution (as amended), which emphasises federal character and inclusive governance.

Supporters further contend that adopting a rotational single-term presidency for a trial period of 36 years could help address longstanding concerns over marginalisation, national cohesion, and political balance within the country’s multi-ethnic structure.

However, constitutional lawyers and political observers note that any such amendment would require broad national consensus and the approval of both the National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly before becoming law.

As of the time of filing this report, neither Atiku nor his media team had issued an official statement regarding the alleged constitutional proposal.

APC’s Coming Since 2015 Made Young Nigerians Lose Hope In Their Country– Ralph Nwosu

Founding National Chairman of the main opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chief Ralph Nwosu, has decried that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) administration had made millions of young Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora to lose hope in their country.

Chief Nwosu, an exemplary Igbo leader with a sort of integrity that is difficult to find in the political circle in Nigeria, made this assertion while speaking at the launch of the “Rise Up Naija Media Campaign” on Thursday, at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

Nwosu, who has recently been described in several quarters as the hero of democracy in Nigeria for keeping the ADC firm as a vehicle for the opposition coalition despite several attempts of threats and inducements from the ruling APC, stated that, “The APC has made this country almost hopeless for Nigerians, especially the young people. We are going to make things right. There is nothing good that comes without challenges. When you expect challenges, it helps you navigate them better.”

Similarly, the Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Bolaji Abdullahi, affirmed that the only factor holding the APC together was political power.

Abdullahi, who spoke at the event, stated that the ruling party would collapse without access to power.

Abdullahi criticised APC’s style of politics, saying Nigeria could overcome its present challenges when the ADC takes over power in 2027.

His words: “We are going to get out of the kind of politics we play today, but it depends on what we do going forward. Our failure has always been that we never think about what happens to this country after us. We have never thought about the next generation.”

According to him, the ADC was founded on ethics, principles, and egalitarianism, insisting that the party’s identity was bigger than any individual.

He said the party was determined to tackle insecurity, corruption, and poor leadership when elected into power in 2027.

“How do we stop APC from returning to power in 2027? How do we end banditry? These are questions we must answer going forward,” he added.
