DIGITAL LYNCH VERSUS DUE PROCESS: EZZYCARES COLLEGE PUSHES AGAINST CYBERBULLYING

The management of Ezzy International College of Nursing Science, Enugu, has issued a firm public disclaimer in response to a wave of online allegations and activist statements that seem like a gang up by certain bloggers and attention seekers on the cyber space.

The institution describes the situation not only as a case of media smear but as part of a growing trend of cyberbullying targeting educational institutions.

The controversy was amplified following a statement by the Youth Rights Campaign (YRC) championed by one Francis Nwapa, which accused the college of authoritarian practices and unlawful expulsion of one Ms. Ifeoma Rosemary Nwogaranya, a supposed student of the institution. In its official response dated April 17, 2026, the college unequivocally expressed its dismay at the level of misinformation and damage these blog-jobbers are peddling across the cyber space.

The institution emphasized that all allegations relating to suspension, expulsion, or disciplinary action against the individual in question were false.

According to the disclaimer, Ms. Nwogaranya has not been issued any suspension, expulsion, warning letter, or formal query by the institution. The management maintained that all disciplinary measures within the college follow strict procedural guidelines, including written documentation and formal communication to affected students.

This stark contradiction between the viral claims and the institution’s official position raises serious concerns about the role of unverified information in shaping public perception.

In this era of digital freedom, the rise of “digital mob pressure” particularly against the education Nigerian institutions and healthcare sector have increasingly found themselves at the mercy of online narratives that spread rapidly, often without verification.

In the case, Ezzy International College, these bloggers bloggers and social commentators escalated an unverified claim into a full-scale reputational attack. What began as a social media discussion has evolved into a coordinated wave of accusatory content, with emotionally charged language and strong allegations of “tyranny” and “repression.” Critics of this trend warn that such rhetoric, when not grounded in verified facts, amounts to acts of cyberbullying.

This is worse off when the institutions being bullied are not given adequate opportunity to respond. Cyberbullying is often associated with individuals, but institutions are not immune. Reputational damage, loss of trust, and public backlash can have long-term consequences, particularly for academic establishments that rely on credibility and public confidence.

While the college’s management reiterated its commitment to due process, stating that disciplinary actions when necessary are handled transparently and in accordance with institutional regulations. It also noted that verification of any student’s status must be conducted through official channels, not through social media narratives.
Observers point out that the absence of documented evidence such as suspension or expulsion letters should have ordinarily prompt caution before public accusations are made.

But instead, in this instance, these bloggers and online commentators appeared to take have taken laws into their hands, and acted as both the judge and jury.
While advocacy groups like YRC play an important role in defending student rights and promoting accountability, analysts argue that such interventions must be grounded in verifiable facts. Advocacy loses credibility when it amplifies claims that are later disputed by clear institutional records. Ezzy International College also warned against attempts to use its name in connection with fundraising, scholarship appeals, or public sympathy campaigns based on what it describes as “unverified claims.”

This incident highlights a broader societal challenge: balancing the power of digital activism with the responsibility of factual accuracy. In an era where information travels faster than verification, institutions and individuals alike can become targets of narrative-driven outrage.

For Ezzy International College, the priority now is restoring public confidence and ensuring that its reputation is not defined by what it calls a “misleading and damaging online campaign.”

As the truth struggles to shine through in this situation, one thing remains clear: in the court of public opinion, facts compete with virality. Unfortunately, virality with its falsehood pushed by its propagators, often thrives.
