– as Sanwo-Olu’s wife visits Lagos Assembly

The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, on Friday led a team of young boys to the House of Assembly as part of a mentorship programme she initiated for the boy-child.

The First Lady, who arrived with the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, was received by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, and members at a special plenary session held to encourage the children.

Advising the young boys, Dr. Obasa, a lawyer, recalled how, as a young student, he got challenged to love Literature after he attended a theatre performance where someone quoted from one of William Shakespeare’s works without looking at a book or paper.

He advised the children and explained the roles of the legislature in the lives of Lagos State and its residents as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“I want you to resolve to be true leaders of tomorrow. And to do this, you must say no to crime. A criminal can never be a leader.

“So try to be good children and students. You have learnt from my colleagues and I today. We all started as youth. All it takes is to be good boys and law-abiding citizens,” he advised.

The Speaker noted that the House takes the welfare of every resident important.

“In the next 25 years, let us hear the impact of this visit from you,” he urged adding that the child’s right law passed by the House protects children of the state just.

He advised the children to ensure that they are able to speak their mother-tongue effectively.

Addressing the House, Dr. Sanwo-Olu said the young boys, under the aegis of the Lagos State Boy Child Initiative, were selected from public and private schools as well as orphanages and correctional facilities.

She noted that focus has mostly been on the girl child adding that the initiative is aimed, among others, to mentor young boys, raise awareness about the rights of the boy child and make them useful to society.

Commending the First Lady, lawmakers who spoke at plenary urged the boys to keep the memory of the visit and apply the advice that they received.

In continuation of his philanthropic acts to the public, Primate Ayodele has held another edition of his palliative market initiative today Saturday, 22nd of June, 2024 at the Ijoko branch of his church in Ogun state.

This has made it the fourth edition since the palliative market initiative started in 2023. The maiden and second edition was held at the Lagos headquarters of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church while the third one was held in Ekiti state in commemoration of the planting of a new church.

At the latest edition which was held in Ogun state, Primate Ayodele, as usual, crashed the prices of food commodities like rice, noodles, Semo, Garri, groundnut oil, Wheat, to mention but a few.

Just like the previous editions, 30 half bags of rice were sold for N8,000 each, paints of Garri were sold for N500, bags of Semolina were sold for N2,000, kegs of groundnut oil went for N2,500, bags of wheat were sold for N2,000, Small and big sizes cartons of noodles were sold for N1,000 and N2,000 respectively.

The largesse wasn’t opened to church members alone; it was all-encompassing as it included members of other churches, Muslims, and others who were interested. In all, about beneficiaries were recorded.

While speaking on the reason behind the palliative market initiative, Primate Ayodele stated that it’s a way to assist the government and to show them that there is hardship in the country. He made it known that his ministry will continue with the palliative market till hardship reduces in Nigeria.

‘’We won’t stop our palliative market till the economy of Nigeria is better. This is our own way of assisting the government because truly, they can’t do it alone. We are also passing a message to the government that there is serious hardship in the country and that there is a need to work on solutions to mitigate this perilous moment.’’

‘’If the government can embrace this kind of initiative and crash the price of food items in the country, hardship will reduce drastically and the people will prefer it. The current prices of food items are causing anguish and pain, the government should do something about it.’’
