Oyo NUT Elects New Executives

The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State wing, has elected new executive members to preside over its affairs for the next four years.

The election of the new state executives was conducted on Wednesday, during the NUT Oyo State wing’s 8th quadrennial Delegates Conference, held in Ibadan, the state capital.

Speaking during the opening session of the conference, the National President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Comrade Titus Audu Amba, stated that the union was founded on democratic principles and the philosophy of labour unions.

According to him, in line with this, the union at the national, state and local levels conducts elections to usher in new executives at the end of every stipulated tenure.

Consequently, the election for the new executive members of the Oyo State wing was due to be held this May, 2026.

Comrade Amba, represented by the National Social Secretary, Comrade Titi Ade Adebanjo reiterated the union’s commitment to continue pursuing better welfare and improved conditions for teaching and learning in Nigeria.

The outgoing NUT chairman, Comrade Raji Oladimeji Ismael, outlined major achievements recorded between 2022 and 2026, highlighting significant improvements in teachers’ welfare, professional development, and infrastructural expansion.

According to him, the Union secured prompt salary payments, promotion arrears, annual increments, and interventions on pension-related matters, while also resolving cases of victimisation, wrongful postings, salary stoppage, and other disputes through its Legal and Welfare Committees.

“Persistent advocacy led to the recruitment of additional teachers and non-teaching staff, which eased workloads, improved teacher–pupil ratios, and enhanced learning outcomes across schools. It also facilitated long-delayed promotions, conducted trainings for SWEC members, and organised capacity-building programmes and mentorship sessions for young teachers”, he added.

Comrade Raji said significant infrastructural projects were completed during the period, including the renovation of the State Secretariat, establishment of NUT Model Schools, construction of new classrooms, expansion of the NUT Resource Centre, and development of an Olympic-size sports complex.

“The Union also reconstructed the access road to the State Secretariat, procured customized Ankara for teachers, and organised state-wide quiz competitions. Despite challenges such as rising living costs, inadequate facilities, and insecurity in some communities, the Union expressed confidence that the foundation laid would support continued progress under the incoming leadership.”

In his acceptance speech, the newly elected chairman, Comrade Hassan Ajibola Fatai, promised to work with all members and stakeholders to reposition the union to better serve the welfare of its members.

Hassan, a teacher at Migrant Farmers Primary School, Igbo-Iroko Kishi, vowed to safeguard the integrity, dignity, and professionalism of the teaching profession in the state.

Other newly elected executive members include Adeleke Adesina as deputy chairman, Alonge Oluyemisi as 1st vice chairman, Morakinyo Oyebola 2nd vice chairman, Badmus Abiona as 3rd vice chairman, Bello Folasade as 4th vice chairman, Titilolu Ibukunolu Treasurer, Dada Kabirat 1st internal auditor, Akinjide Yusuf 2nd auditor and Ajala Niyi publicity secretary.

S.O.S: Urgent Assistance Needed: Bimpe Joseph Nee Ogunmodede from Eruku, Kwara State Seeks N1.5m for Hospital Bills and Treatment After Leg Amputation

Bimpe Joseph (née Ogunmodede), a respected member of the Yard Compound clan in ErukuCity within Ekiti Local Government of Kwara State, is confronting a severe reality following complications arising from a standard medical procedure, highlighting the adverse implications of prolonged illness, a situation unfortunately exemplified by Bimpe’s current predicament

Already battling a completely one-leg amputation as a result of chronic diabetes at the Titcomb College Hospital one of Kogi State missionary largest hospitals in Egbe. Bimpe is now at risk of losing her more organs if proper treatment is not administered

“My family has managed to raise N200,000 so far, but we are still short of our goal”, she told Bethnews Media publisher, Oluwaseun Fabiyi

Bimpe’s challenges started a few years ago with a severe diabetes diagnosis, which she has been actively managing; however, it is widely acknowledged that diabetes is a condition that requires careful monitoring and regular medical check-ups for effective treatment, and even minor injuries require more than standard care for healing

As concerns about accountability persist, her primary focus remains on survival. ‘I have been unable to perform daily tasks normally since the onset of this illness, nor can I work due to the loss of one leg. My life came to a standstill during my prolonged hospital stay, and I now rely heavily on others for basic needs.’ The financial burden has severely impacted her capacity to fulfill fundamental obligations

The specialist has prescribed an injection for me, which costs N19,700 every three days; this prescription applies both during my hospitalization and after discharge. She narrated further as tears dropped from her eyes

I was informed that diligently following the treatment plan would yield positive outcomes. Unfortunately, the costs associated with medication and injections are excessively high, making this prospect financially inaccessible

The total amount required is approximately N1.5m. The leg has undergone amputation and is healing progressively

For Bimpe Joseph, the battle encompasses both bodily and emotional realms, as she endeavors to recuperate her vitality and maintain her honor

As I strive to recover my strength, I am also focused on avoiding becoming dependent on others. In light of this, I respectfully request aid from Nigerians and supporters of ErukuCity, with the hope that my family will not bear the brunt of my circumstances.

Those who wish to support Bimpe Joseph in her current state are kindly requested to donate to her bank

In every nation’s history, there comes a defining moment when leadership, vision, courage, and patriotism converge to inspire a new era of progress. For the Nigerian Army, that defining moment has emerged under the leadership of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu. Since assuming office, Lt. *A New Dawn of Strength and Professionalism: The Remarkable Transformation of the Nigerian Army Under Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu*

By Comrade Oladimeji Odeyemi.

At a time when security challenges continue to evolve across Africa and the global landscape, the Nigerian Army under Lt. General Waidi Shaibu has demonstrated uncommon resilience, innovation, and professionalism. His leadership has not only strengthened military operations across the country but has also renewed public confidence in the Nigerian Army as a people-oriented institution dedicated to peace, national unity, and sustainable security.

*Leadership Defined by Vision and Courage*

Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu represents a new generation of military leadership built on discipline, intelligence, strategic thinking, and deep operational experience. Widely respected for his years of distinguished service in various military formations and operational theaters, he has consistently demonstrated exceptional competence in handling complex security situations.

From the very beginning of his leadership, Lt. General Shaibu made it clear that the Nigerian Army would embrace modernization, professionalism, accountability, and operational efficiency as the foundation for a stronger and more responsive military institution. His command philosophy has reflected a clear understanding of contemporary security realities and the urgent need to position the Army as a modern force capable of confronting both conventional and asymmetric threats.

Under his leadership, the Nigerian Army has intensified counter-insurgency operations, strengthened anti-banditry campaigns, enhanced intelligence-driven operations, and improved collaboration with other security agencies. These efforts have yielded remarkable progress in restoring stability in several troubled regions across Nigeria.

*Renewed Commitment to National Security*

One of the most remarkable achievements of the Nigerian Army under Lt. General Waidi Shaibu has been its renewed determination to confront terrorism, insurgency, kidnapping, and criminal activities threatening national peace.

Across the North-East, troops have continued to sustain pressure on terrorist groups, dismantling criminal hideouts, recovering weapons, rescuing kidnapped victims, and reclaiming territories previously threatened by insurgents. Through improved operational coordination and strategic deployment of military assets, the Nigerian Army has recorded significant successes in its ongoing operations.

Similarly, in regions affected by banditry and violent criminality, the Army has intensified offensive operations aimed at restoring peace to communities and protecting innocent civilians. Under Lt. General Shaibu’s leadership, there has been a stronger emphasis on proactive military engagement, rapid response operations, and enhanced troop mobility.

The Nigerian Army has also strengthened its border security operations and reinforced measures against transnational crimes, arms trafficking, and organized criminal networks. These efforts have further enhanced Nigeria’s internal security architecture and contributed to regional stability.

*Prioritizing Troop Welfare and Morale*

One of the defining characteristics of Lt. General Waidi Shaibu’s administration has been his commitment to the welfare of officers and soldiers. Recognizing that the strength of any military institution lies in the morale and wellbeing of its personnel, the Chief of Army Staff has consistently prioritized initiatives aimed at improving living conditions, operational support, and overall welfare for troops.

From improved accommodation projects to enhanced medical services, infrastructure upgrades, training opportunities, and better logistics support, the Nigerian Army under his leadership has demonstrated a genuine commitment to the welfare of its personnel.

Lt. General Shaibu has repeatedly emphasized the “Soldier First” philosophy — a leadership approach that acknowledges the sacrifices made daily by Nigerian troops in defense of the nation. This philosophy has significantly boosted morale among officers and soldiers, inspiring renewed dedication, discipline, and patriotism within the ranks.

The Army’s investment in welfare has not only strengthened operational effectiveness but has also reinforced the confidence of military families and communities who continue to support the nation’s security efforts.

*Advancing Military Modernization and Capacity Building*

Modern warfare demands modern solutions, and under Lt. General Waidi Shaibu, the Nigerian Army has embraced technological advancement and strategic modernization.

The Army has expanded its investment in training, tactical preparedness, and specialized military education. Officers and soldiers have continued to participate in advanced local and international training programs designed to enhance operational efficiency, leadership capacity, intelligence gathering, and combat readiness.

The Nigerian Army has also intensified efforts toward digital transformation, improved communication systems, surveillance capabilities, and intelligence operations. These reforms are gradually repositioning the Army into a more agile, technology-driven, and combat-ready force capable of responding swiftly to emerging security threats.

Furthermore, the Army’s increasing focus on research, innovation, and local defense capabilities reflects a forward-looking strategy aimed at reducing dependence on external military support while strengthening indigenous military capacity.

*Strengthening Civil-Military Relations*

Beyond military operations, Lt. General Waidi Shaibu has continued to promote stronger relationships between the Nigerian Army and civilian communities.

The Nigerian Army under his leadership has remained actively involved in humanitarian interventions, disaster response efforts, medical outreach programs, educational support initiatives, and community engagement activities across the country.

This people-centered approach has significantly improved public perception of the Nigerian Army and strengthened trust between the military and civilian populations.

In times of crisis, including humanitarian emergencies and natural disasters, the Nigerian Army has repeatedly demonstrated compassion, professionalism, and commitment to protecting lives and supporting affected communities.

Lt. General Shaibu understands that modern security management extends beyond the battlefield. His leadership recognizes the importance of winning public trust, fostering cooperation with local communities, and promoting national unity.

*Enhancing International Military Cooperation*

Another notable achievement under Lt. General Shaibu’s leadership has been the strengthening of Nigeria’s military partnerships with international allies and regional security organizations.

The Nigerian Army has continued to engage in strategic collaborations, joint military exercises, defense diplomacy, intelligence sharing, and security cooperation initiatives with allied nations and international institutions.

These partnerships have enhanced operational capabilities, promoted knowledge exchange, and reinforced Nigeria’s role as a leading contributor to peacekeeping and security operations within Africa.

Nigeria’s military reputation on the global stage continues to grow under the current leadership, with the Nigerian Army increasingly recognized for its resilience, professionalism, and commitment to regional peace and stability.

*Inspiring Confidence in the Future*

The transformation currently taking place within the Nigerian Army under Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu is not merely about military operations; it is about rebuilding national confidence, restoring institutional pride, and strengthening the foundations of national security.

Today, many Nigerians see a military institution that is more determined, more professional, and more focused than ever before. Troops are increasingly motivated, operational strategies are becoming more refined, and the Army’s commitment to protecting the nation remains unwavering.

Lt. General Shaibu’s leadership style combines firmness with compassion, discipline with innovation, and courage with strategic foresight. These qualities have continued to inspire officers, soldiers, and citizens alike.

At a critical moment in Nigeria’s history, the Nigerian Army stands as a symbol of resilience, patriotism, sacrifice, and hope. Under the leadership of Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the institution is steadily evolving into a modern and highly respected force capable of confronting present and future security challenges.

*Conclusion*

The story of the Nigerian Army under Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu is one of transformation, determination, and renewed national purpose. Through visionary leadership, operational reforms, improved troop welfare, enhanced professionalism, and strengthened civil-military relations, the Nigerian Army has entered a new era of growth and effectiveness.

As Nigeria continues its journey toward greater peace, security, and national development, the contributions of the Nigerian Army under Lt. General Shaibu’s leadership cannot be overlooked. His administration has demonstrated that with strong leadership, strategic planning, and unwavering patriotism, the Armed Forces can remain a powerful force for national unity and progress.

The Nigerian Army today is not only defending the nation’s borders and confronting security threats; it is also rebuilding hope, restoring confidence, and inspiring a renewed belief in Nigeria’s future.

Under Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the Nigerian Army continues to rise — stronger, smarter, more professional, and more committed than ever to the service of the nation and humanity.

NASSCO Honours Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal with Excellence Award for Inclusive Governance

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has received the Award of Excellence from the National Social Safety Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO) in recognition of his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance and social protection delivery.

The award was presented during a stakeholder engagement event with local government chairmen, held at the Transcorp Congress Hall in Abuja.

NASSCO, a federal agency operating under the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, is responsible for implementing social safety-net programmes designed to protect and empower vulnerable populations across Nigeria.

In her remarks while presenting the award, the National Coordinator of NASSCO, Dr. Funmi Olotu, stated that the honour reflects Governor Lawal’s dedication to improving social protection systems and promoting inclusive governance in Zamfara State.

Accepting the award, Governor Lawal commended the Federal Government, the World Bank, and other development partners for their continued support of ongoing reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s social protection architecture.

“This engagement is timely and strategic,” Governor Lawal said. “In Nigeria, especially in conflict-affected states like Zamfara, social protection has shifted from welfare to a vital tool for governance, security, poverty reduction, and community resilience.”

He noted that insecurity in Zamfara has led to displacement, disruption of livelihoods, food insecurity, and significant economic hardship, which disproportionately affects women, children, displaced persons, people with disabilities, and rural communities.

The Governor stressed the need for better coordination, transparency, data-driven targeting, and stronger collaboration among federal, state, and local governments to ensure resources reach those who need them most.

He also praised the expansion of the National Social Register and the integration of the National Identification Number (NIN), describing these as steps that improve transparency, efficiency, and accountability in service delivery.

Governor Lawal further called for inclusive development that goes beyond cash transfers to include livelihood support, skills training, agriculture, healthcare, education, financial inclusion, and community resilience. “This will help vulnerable populations move from dependency to sustainable participation,” he said.
