ZENITH BANK RETAINS THE TOP SPOT AS NIGERIA’S NUMBER ONE BANK BY TIER-1 CAPITAL FOR FOURTEEN STRAIGHT YEARS IN THE 2023 TOP 1000 WORLD BANKS RANKING Zenith Bank Plc has retained its ranking as the Number One Bank in Nigeria by Tier-1 Capital in the 2023 Top 1000 World Banks’ Rankings, published by The Banker Magazine. For the fourteenth year in a row, the Bank has held its position as the number one Tier-1 bank in Nigeria, emerging as the 467th Bank globally with a Tier-1 Capital of $2.54 billion. The rankings, published in the July 2023 edition of The Banker Magazine of the Financial Times Group, United Kingdom, were based on the 2022 year-end Tier-1 capital of banks globally. The rankings continue to be the primary source for global bank financials and are used by most international organisations in their assessments of banks. Zenith Bank’s financial performance for the year was bolstered by an impressive double-digit growth of 24% in gross earnings, leading to an improved market share in both the retail and corporate segments of the market. This occurred despite a persistently challenging macroeconomic environment and headwinds. Commenting on the ranking, the Group Managing Director/CEO of Zenith Bank Plc, Dr Ebenezer Onyeagwu, said, “Being ranked as the Number One Bank in Nigeria by Tier-1 Capital for the fourteenth consecutive year attests to our resilience as an institution despite a very challenging macroeconomic environment and global headwinds. It is also an affirmation of our best-in-class service and commitment to value creation for our highly esteemed customers.” He thanked the Founder and Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, Jim Ovia, CFR, for his foundational role in building the structures and setting the institution on the path to continued success; the Board for their vision and outstanding leadership; the staff for their unwavering commitment and dedication; and the Bank’s customers for their unflinching loyal support of the Zenith brand. Tier 1 Capital describes capital adequacy, which is the core measure of a bank’s financial strength from a regulator’s point of view. According to the ranking, Tier 1 Capital, as defined by the latest Bank for International Settlements (BIS) guidelines, includes loss-absorbing capital, i.e., common stock, disclosed reserves, retained earnings, and minority interests in the equity of subsidiaries that are less than wholly owned. Zenith Bank became one of the latest companies to join the exclusive group of stocks worth over one trillion, as its market capitalisation on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) crossed the N1 trillion mark in the third week of June 2023. This followed the appreciation of its share price by 3.23% to close at N32 per share, taking its market capitalisation above a trillion to close at N1.004 trillion. The bank’s track record of excellent performances has continued to earn it numerous awards including being recognised as Bank of the Year (Nigeria) in The Banker's Bank of the Year Awards 2020 and 2022; Best Bank in Nigeria, for three consecutive years from 2020 to 2022, in the Global Finance World's Best Banks Awards; Best Commercial Bank, Nigeria 2021 and 2022, in the World Finance Banking Awards; Best Corporate Governance Bank, Nigeria in the World Finance Corporate Governance Awards 2022; Best in Corporate Governance' Financial Services' Africa, for four consecutive years from 2020 to 2023, by the Ethical Boardroom; Most Sustainable Bank, Nigeria in the International Banker 2023 Banking Awards; Best Commercial Bank, Nigeria and Best Innovation In Retail Banking, Nigeria in the International Banker 2022 Banking Awards. Also, the bank emerged as the Most Valuable Banking Brand in Nigeria in the Banker Magazine Top 500 Banking Brands 2020 and 2021, and Retail Bank of the year, for three consecutive years from 2020 to 2022, at the BusinessDay Banks and Other Financial Institutions (BAFI) Awards. Similarly, Zenith Bank was named as Bank of the Decade (People's Choice) at the ThisDay Awards 2020, Bank of the Year 2021 by Champion Newspaper, Bank of the Year 2022 by New Telegraph Newspaper, and Most Responsible Organisation in Africa 2021 by SERAS Awards.

In the face of the coronavirus pandemic and the resulting lockdown, Prudential Zenith Life Insurance is rolling out a range of services to help customers cope with the lockdown.
The new services include a range of additional COVID-19 insurance cover enhancements, without additional premium charges, and a waiver for ‘pandemic’ exclusions as contained in its policy language.
In line with the recent pronouncement of the federal government, the company will be temporarily locked down and has therefore set up a dedicated claims team with remote working capabilities, to enable customers make and receive claims virtually.
According to the statement from the insurance company, the claims procedure will be simplified to allow customers make claims through the WhatsApp channel.
This development makes it possible for customers to buy insurance products without any physical interface with sales personnel or visit to a physical branch.
Commenting on the changes, Prudential Africa CEO Matt Lilley said, “we realise this is a worrying time for everyone and we want to reassure you that protecting the health and wellness of our customers, employees and partners is our primary concern.
“At Prudential, we have been delivering promises for over 170 years and this time will be no different. I am proud of the measures we are announcing today and I know that they will provide our customers additional peace of mind.”
He added that the waiting periods for new cover have been reduced, and the company is providing additional training and incentives to sales personnel to continue providing advice and access to insurance, even as they work remotely.
He encouraged Nigerians to stay safe and adhere to the directives from the Ministry of health, Nigerian centre for disease control (NCDC) and other relevant authorities.
“We are going to get through these trying times together” he assured.

MOHBAD SHOULD HAVE RUN TO US, OPC SAYS, AS IT DEMANDS JUSTICE FOR LATE RAPPER

The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) has lamented the death of the Nigerian Rapper Mohbad who died recently at the age of 27, saying, if he had opened up to the group about his travails, he would have been kept safe from his attackers.

In a message of sympathy to Mohbad’s immediate family, management team and worldwide fans,.OPC President, Otunba Wasiu Afolabi, described the death of Mohbad as an unquantifiable yet avoidable tragedy.

“OPC sees the death of this promising, hardworking and talented young musician as a personal loss because he was a true Yoruba Ambassador, whose songs and craftsmanship promoted the Yoruba language and people,” said Afolabi in a press statement on Monday by the OPC General Secretary, Comrade Bunmi Fasehun.

“However, we believe he, his parents and management ought to have involved the OPC when the disagreement between Mohbad and other associates escalated to the point of intimidation, assault and haunting.

“OPC has successfully mediated in such cases in the past and we have brought peace and harmony to such feuding parties to the satisfaction of all and sundry.

“Sometimes we act alone and sometimes in collaboration with the Police Force, Civil Defence and DSS. But at the end of the day, we protect the weak against the strong oppressor.

“Where necessary, we can take the case directly to the government. But in most cases, the mere mention of OPC being involved will bring sanity to all concerned, no matter who that person or organisation considers himself to be.

“And I dare say that Mohbad would have lived a better quality of life, and would most likely be alive today, if he and his people had brought his troubles to OPC.

“Meanwhile, we want to use this medium to urge the police, DSS and government to bring to justice all the individuals and groups who contributed to the oppression, harassment and beating of this young man. It doesn’t matter whether such tormentors contributed directly and indirectly to his death. There are enough video evidence and living witnesses to give Mohbad justice in the law courts, even if the charges will be for assault, battery, conduct capable of causing a breach of the peace and attempted murder.

“In addition, all the police officers and formations that refused to act in his complaints should all be brought to book for official sanctioning.”

According to Afolabi, OPC, as a socio-cultural organisation, stood for peace and justice as well as the security of the community and the nation at large.

He recalled that since its formation by the Late Founder, Dr. Frederick Fasehun in 1994, the organisation had not only contributed security personnel for guarding the community, but had been involved in providing safety for petroleum pipelines in the South-West.
