Senate 2019: Victor Adoji, best man for Kogi East – Group

Published

on

More and more support is coming the way of Dr. Victor Alewo Adoji, the erudite banker-turned politician who is gearing up to represent Kogi East Senatorial District in the upper legislative chamber of the National Assembly under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in 2019.

This time, Kogi Liberation Movement (ILM), Kogi East chapter, a political pressure group, has thrown its full weight behind the ADC candidate, Dr. Adoji.

The group led by its coordinator, Comrade Misah Ibrahim, made the declaration in a statement issued at the end of a town hall meeting held by it in Olamaboro, Kogi State.

Ibrahim said that considering what Adoji has done for the district in his personal capacity, it would be foolhardy for them to fold their arms while another person grabs the post.

“It is difficult to forget the many good things Dr. Adoji did for our people even in his personal capacity.

“This is a man who took the responsibility of paying monthly allowances to primary school teachers equivalent to their salaries to motivate them into giving their best to the students.

“He built the only standard mosque and churches in Olamaboro. He has also built schools and given scholarships to youths who want to further their education as well paid the WAEC fees of those in their senior year in secondary schools. Adoji, has touched several lives either directly or indirectly. We are yet to see his match in the district,” Ibrahim said.

Lamenting on the poor representation of the district, the leader of the group said: “Kogi East Senatorial District has suffered misrepresentation for years. Those who have represented this district have serially failed us in terms of good legislation, provision of amenities through constituency projects and empowerment.

“We can’t continue to wallow in this politics of stagnation where some selfish individuals will gather together to oppose everything that is good for our land.

“Our region has suffered so much neglect because of the attitude of some of our leaders, despite the fact that we have several opportunities to develop.”

Comrade Ibrahim further disclosed that they were not in the know of any candidate developing interest in the position at the moment aside from the former banker.

“Adoji is the only person seeking for the office who has ever told us why he is going there. The reasons are quite important to us and we shall put him there. We shall hold him accountable thereafter. He is not just an aspirant but a philanthropist with good heart to lead.

“To me, he is the most suitable man to represent us at the senate next year,” he declared.

The group further urged all stakeholders to support Adoji’s victory at the poll to enable him bring emancipation to the people of Kogi East.

Going by the support coming in from every corner of the district, Dr. Adoji seems to be having a smooth sail to the senate.

UK richest family jailed

Sadly, the richest family in Uk is in a mess. A Swiss court handed jail sentences to four members of Britain’s richest family on Friday for exploiting Indian staff at their Geneva mansion.

UK richest family jailed

The Hindujas — who were not present in court — were acquitted of human trafficking, but convicted on other charges in a stunning verdict for the family whose fortune is estimated at 37 billion pounds ($47 billion).

Prakash Hinduja and his wife Kamal Hinduja each got four years and six months, while their son Ajay and his wife Namrata received four-year terms, the presiding judge in Geneva ruled.

The cases stem from the family’s practice of bringing servants from their native India and included accusations of confiscating their passports once they were flown to Switzerland.

Prosecutors argued the Hindujas paid their staff a pittance and gave them little freedom to leave the house.

The family denied the allegations, claiming the prosecutors wanted to “do in the Hindujas”.

The Hindujas reached a confidential out-of-court settlement with the three employees who made the accusations against them.

Despite this, the prosecution decided to pursue the case due to the gravity of the charges.

Geneva prosecutor Yves Bertossa had requested a custodial sentence of five and a half years against Prakash and Kamal Hinduja.

Aged 78 and 75 respectively, both had been absent since the start of the trial for health reasons.

In his closing address, the prosecutor accused the family of abusing the “asymmetrical situation” between powerful employer and vulnerable employee to save money.

Household staff were paid a salary between 220 and 400 francs ($250-450) a month, far below what they could expect to earn in Switzerland.

“They’re profiting from the misery of the world,” Bertossa told the court.

– ‘Not mistreated slaves’ –

But the Hinduja family’s defence lawyers argued that the three plaintiffs received ample benefits, were not kept in isolation and were free to leave the villa.

“We are not dealing with mistreated slaves,” Nicolas Jeandin told the court.

Indeed, the employees “were grateful to the Hindujas for offering them a better life”, his fellow lawyer Robert Assael argued.

Representing Ajay Hinduja, lawyer Yael Hayat had slammed the “excessive” indictment, arguing the trial should be a question of “justice, not social justice”.

Namrata Hinduja’s lawyer Romain Jordan also pleaded for acquittal, claiming the prosecutors were aiming to make an example of the family.

He argued the prosecution had failed to mention payments made to staff on top of their cash salaries.

“No employee was cheated out of his or her salary,” Assael added.

Some staff even asked for raises, which they received.

With interests in oil and gas, banking and healthcare, the Hinduja Group is present in 38 countries and employs around 200,000 people.

Davido reacts after clash with Portable

Nigerian Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has reacted after his colleague, Portable, called him out for allegedly giving him ‘bad advice’ during their recent dinner in the United States.

It would be recalled that Portable recently lamented that Davido, who signed with Sony Music, advised him against joining the label and urged him to sign with Empire instead.

The ‘Zazu’ crooner alleged foul play, saying he is also aiming for a Grammy like Davido yet the DMW boss is asking him to join a label that might not influence the award for him.

Davido has now reacted by unfollowing Portable on Instagram.

A visit to their respective Instagram accounts on Thursday evening confirmed that the DMW boss has now unfollowed Portable.

Portable had earlier raised the alarm that some people were trying to pit Davido against him.

According to him, people have been “pushing” him to fight with Davido but he refused because the DMW boss has helped him in the past.
