It was shocking and tragic as J prom boys allegedly poured hot pepper soup on Hon Batola’s wife who is the Iyaloja on Monday, Octobe 12, 2015 at Yaba Market Lagos .

According to reliable sources, a Lady called Wemimo allegedly hired some thugs rumoured to be the boys of a popular area boy,Jay prom to pour hot pepper soup on the Iyaloja of the market,Chief Monsurat Oluwayemi Owolabi for disallowing them to display their market on the road side. It was gathered that earlier that  morning, the Lagos State task force came to Yaba market and chased those selling by the roadside and instructed them to move into Tejuosho Market. As the Lagos State task Force left, some of the market women came immediately to  display their goods, at that point the Iyaloja came and instructed them  not to display their goods by the road as  instructed by Lagos State Task Force because refusal to adhere to such instruction will be penalised and she would be blamed for non compliance.

This didn’t go down well with the traders and as the Wife of former Lagos State House of representative, Monsuru Owolabi popularly called Bartola turned  to inform the market (internal) task force for monitoring,  hot pepper was splashed on her by some boys alleged to have been invited by a woman leader called Wemimo who has been threatening to deal with the Iyaloja for some time.

CDS Statement on Collaborators Was Operational, Not Political — Buratai

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, has clarified that recent remarks by the Chief of Defence Staff on collaborators aiding insurgents were widely misinterpreted, stressing that the comments were strictly operational and not political.

Buratai made the clarification during an interview with Seun Okinbaloye on Channels Television, amid growing public debate over the statement.

According to him, the Defence Chief’s comments were made in the context of ongoing military operations in Nigeria’s North-East, where troops are battling insurgent groups such as Boko Haram.

He explained that the term “collaborators” refers to individuals who provide operational support to insurgents, including intelligence, logistics, and supplies, rather than any political actors.

“Insurgency relies heavily on support networks within communities. These are the collaborators being referred to, not politicians,” Buratai said.

The former army chief noted that misinterpretation of such statements could create unnecessary tension and distract from the real security challenges on the ground.

He emphasized that identifying and dismantling these support networks remains a critical component of Nigeria’s counter-insurgency strategy, urging better understanding of military communications by the public and media.

Buratai further stressed that insurgency is a complex security issue that requires coordinated efforts between the military, intelligence agencies, and civilians, adding that accurate reporting is essential to national security efforts.

THE BURATAI CONUNDRUM: A STRATEGIC DISSERVICE TO NATIONAL INTEREST By Femi Oyewale

Buratai Urges Whole-of-Society Approach to End Insurgency

Abuja, Nigeria – Former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Yusuf Buratai, has called for a comprehensive national strategy to tackle insurgency, stressing that military action alone cannot end the protracted conflict.

Buratai made the call during an interview on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, while reacting to the Federal Government’s renewed efforts to combat insecurity.

His comments come after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed service chiefs to relocate to Borno State, the epicentre of insurgency, in a bid to strengthen on-ground operations.

The former army chief said although the insurgency has persisted for decades, the Nigerian military has not lost the war. According to him, troops have recorded significant gains over the years, particularly in degrading the capacity of Boko Haram insurgents.

He explained that the declaration of Boko Haram as “technically defeated” reflected the reduction in bombings and the recovery of territories previously controlled by the group between 2016 and 2018.

Buratai, however, noted that insurgents have since adapted, exploiting gaps in operations and the overstretch of security forces deployed across the North-East, North-West and North-Central regions.

He identified key challenges facing the military to include inadequate manpower, limited equipment, difficult terrain, and troop fatigue. He added that the vast landmass of the North-East makes it difficult for troops to effectively dominate the area.

To address the situation, Buratai called for increased troop deployment, establishment of more military bases, and improved use of technology such as drones and surveillance systems.

He also stressed the importance of intelligence gathering, urging security agencies to identify and dismantle networks of informants and collaborators aiding insurgents within communities.

According to him, insurgency is a “people’s war” that requires the collective efforts of government, security agencies, and citizens.

Buratai further emphasized the need for the implementation of a “whole-of-society” approach as outlined in Nigeria’s National Security Strategy, which includes infrastructure development, job creation, and improved social services in affected areas.

On the issue of terrorism financing, he said the responsibility for identifying and prosecuting suspects lies with relevant agencies, adding that the focus should be on taking decisive legal action rather than merely naming individuals.

He also addressed the controversy surrounding the rehabilitation of repentant insurgents, noting that the programme was a government policy. While acknowledging its merits, he said individuals involved in serious crimes should be subjected to due legal process.

Buratai maintained that good governance at all levels remains critical to addressing the root causes of insecurity, particularly poverty and unemployment.

He expressed confidence in the current military leadership, stating that the service chiefs have the capacity to manage the situation and restore stability.
