Domestic Violence: Lagos Assembly Urges Enlightenment Units In Schools

The Lagos State House of Assembly has emphasised the need for a proactive approach in addressing domestic and sexual violence in the state.

At a sitting presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, the House stressed the importance of establishing guidance and counseling units in schools and religious institutions as a way to reach out to the public and prevent such violence.

The House also called on the Ministry of Information to continue its enlightenment campaigns.

In his position, Dr. Obasa pointed out the complexities involved in cases of domestic violence, particularly the impact on children.

“We thank the agencies in Lagos for their continuous efforts in raising awareness among residents.

“However, no law can entirely eliminate any crime. We must go beyond sensitisation and help people understand why relationships, which should be loving, sometimes turn sour,” Obasa said.

He questioned the effectiveness of interventions that involve removing children from their homes, asking, “If we take children away from their parents, who will care for them as their parents would? Even when NGOs intervene and ensure separation, what happens after the separation?”

The Speaker also expressed concerns about the lifestyle choices of some young people, particularly boys in their teens doing everything they can to own homes in affluent areas like Lekki, and young girls who spend days out of school in a bid to make money.

He advocated for educational programmes that would go beyond mere enlightenments to actively teach children about domestic violence.

Moving a motion under ‘Matter of Urgent Public Importance’, Hon. Omolara Olumegbon, representing Lagos Island 1, highlighted the necessity of educating children about domestic violence.

She urged that the existing laws be given the needed spark while there should be improvement in sensation and enlightenment.

She further emphasised the urgency of sustaining awareness and educating the youth. She called on the relevant ministries to intensify their efforts.

Contributing to the debate, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa 2) expressed concern over the high incidence of domestic violence in the society.

While distinguishing domestic violence from parental discipline, he stressed the importance of prevention and the enforcement of existing laws.

On his part, Hon. Abiodun Tobun underscored the importance of teaching values and norms in schools and religious institutions.

Contributing to the debate, Hon. Rotimi Ajomale urged the concerned agencies to increase their efforts in encouraging victims to speak out.

Hon. Aro Moshood highlighted the alarming statistics of women being the primary victims of domestic violence. He called for stronger laws to address the issue while his colleague, Hon. Funke Osafile, advocated for the strengthening of laws and policies.

Suspend Probing Of Ex-Chairman, Adesina Sikiru Now – Leagues Of Registered Political Parties Tells Ogun Assembly

Sahara Weekly Reports That The League of Registered Political party has requested for the suspension of Probe of Local Government Chairmen most especially the immediate past Chairman of Ewekoro Local Government Hon. Sikiru Adesina (ESKAY) by the Ogun State Assembly.

Suspend Probing Of Ex-Chairman, Adesina Sikiru Now - Leagues Of Registered Political Parties Tells Ogun Assembly

It is on record that a few days ago a group that called itself Ewekoro Concerned Citizens wrote a petition to Ogun State House of Assembly against Hon. Sikiru Adesina ESKAY out of political bitterness to stop his second bid ambition of returning as Ewekoro Local Government Area Chairman .

Recognizing the fact that the said petition was born out of ill feelings and the fact that the timing is very wrong because of the ongoing processes of Primary Election Exercise to select candidates for the November 16 Local Government Election, the League of Registered Political Parties cautioned the Ogun State Assembly from been use as an agent of vendetta and blockage for the aspirations of notable politicians who have served the State in one or two capacities.

In a letter written to the House through the Hon. Speaker by The League of Registered Political Parties signed by it’s Chairman Comrade Oginni Olaposi Sunday and copy made available to newsmen in Abeokuta today, LRPP asked the House of Assembly to suspend any probe/ panel of the former Chairman of Ewekoro Local Government Hon Sikiru Adesina ( ESKAY) until the conclusion of the November 16 Local Government Election.

“The above named Organization is using this medium to call on the Speaker and the entire members of Ogun State assembly not to allow some desperate politicians to use the hallow chamber of the assembly Probe Panel as instrument of vendetta and blockage for aspiration of some immediate past Council Chairmen who are willing to re contest the November 16 Local Government Election.

The League of Registered Political party frowned and condemned in totality the timing of the invitation of Hon. Sikiru Adesina (ESKAY) the immediate Council Chairman of Ewekoro Local Government by the House of Assembly.

It’ is pertinent to state here clearly that we are not shielding the former Chairman from making explanations and clarifications on the allegations at an appropriate time but not this time that the Primary Elections that will provide candidates for the November 16 Local Government Election is ongoing.

In the interest of Justice, equality and fair play we hereby request for the suspension of any probe or panel with connection to any Local Government Election Aspirants till after the November 16 Election”

Northern scholars declare support for Tinubu’s renewed war against banditry

Southern Nigerians Warn Against Protests Targeting President Tinubu's Administration

***warn saboteurs and collaborators against plans to distract Matawalle, armed forces

The Concerned Scholars for Peace and Development (CSPD) has thrown its weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts to tackle banditry in the country.

In a statement signed by its President, Dr. Zaharadeen Mohammed Kabir, the group warned saboteurs and collaborators not to distract the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, and the Armed Forces.

The group specifically disowned a Sokoto State-based Islamic cleric, Mallam Bello Asada, for accusing the Federal Government of sponsoring bandit leaders, describing the claim as false and politically motivated.

Kabir alleged that Asada is a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and has ignored revelations of Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal’s payment of N1.378 billion to terrorists and bandits.

The Islamic scholars also called for Asada to be held accountable for his defamatory video, urging Matawalle and troops to remain focused on winning the war against banditry.

“The Concerned National Islamic Scholars for Peace and National Development condemn in the strongest terms the attempts by unscrupulous persons to trivialise the security challenge in the northwest of the country by politicising the issue and urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to allow his administration to be distracted in flushing out criminal elements from the country,” Kabir said.

“This condemnation became necessary in the wake of the misleading video published by a Sokoto State-based Islamic cleric, Mallam Bello Asada, who falsely accused the Federal Government of sponsoring bandit leaders. The video has, unfortunately, been promoted by counter-insurgency expert, Makama Zagazola.

“We have since reviewed the facts and found that Mallam Bello Asada is a card-carrying member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who has conveniently ignored the recent revelations that his paymaster, Zamfara State’s Governor Dauda Lawal paid the sum of One Billion, Three Hundred and Seventy-Eight Million Naira (N1,378, 000,000) to terrorists’ and bandits’ leaders.

“We wonder how Asada became amnesiac to how Governor Lawal paid two hundred million naira each to Kachalla Dogo Gide, Kachalla Bello Turji, and Ado Alero while one hundred and fifty million naira was paid each to Kachalla Halilu Sububu and Gwaska Dan Karami. A responsible Islamic scholar, who has no connection to the bandits would have demanded answers from Governor Dauda Lawal. Asada has no moral right to continue to hide under the cover of being an Islamic scholar.

“It is important to note the political context of these false accusations, especially given the high stakes involved in regional and national politics. The timing and source of the allegations suggest an attempt to distract the Federal Government’s counter-terrorism efforts.

“We reliably learnt that Asada was put up to publishing the video to distract public attention from the leaked document that proved that Governor Lawal paid money to subversive elements that are responsible for the insecurity, killings and kidnappings plaguing the northwest and other parts of Nigeria.

“Asada, who once made a video praying for the death of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for defeating his party’s, Atiku Abubakar at the 2023 General Election, was an automatic choice to produce the pro-terrorist propaganda material that has further undermined security in the region.

“This explains why this character, who had gone into oblivion, is suddenly out to distract the President and the Minister of State for Defence simply because the heat has turned on the bandits especially Turji Bello who has been reported to have been corralled by our Armed Forces and will soon be smoked out.

“We have thus concluded that while Asada’s allegations appear serious, his inability to provide concrete evidence to support his outlandish claims and accusations makes them defamatory.

“We urge the Federal Government to leverage extant legislation to hold Asada accountable for his defamatory video. For instance, several credible Northern groups have condemned similar accusations, describing them as unfounded and politically motivated.”

The group called on the Federal Government to be wary of individuals who come out to discredit, distract, and blackmail state actors when the state takes the war to the bandits.

“It’s obvious that some are Islamic clerics during the day and bandits at night,” Kabir said. He added, “The witch cried at night, and the child died in the morning. We don’t have to look for who, of course, killed the baby.”

Kabir called on the FG to investigate people like Asada, who seem to be in pain over the decisive actions of the government against the bandits.

“It’s obvious that Asada has more to tell the security agencies about the banditry because he is disturbed by the bounty placed on the bandits’ leader and fears he will soon be exposed.”

The CSPD urged the President not to succumb to distraction but to go all out for the bandits until they all surrender and give up their evil ways.

“More of these characters will come out in the next few weeks as the fight gets hotter to smoke out the bandits from the northwest. Mr. President must remain resolute and committed to the charge given to the Armed Forces.”

Groups Petition Tinubu Over Continuous Campaign Of Calumny Against Nigerian Army By Sahara Reporters

The Coalition of Society Groups Against Terrorism In Nigeria has petitioned the presidency on the continued media interference and campaign of Calumny against the Nigerian army by Sahara Reporters.
The group through it’s convener urged the presidency to take steps towards stopping the continued blitz by the online media organization, Sahara Reporters and its publisher, Mr Omoyele Sowore. who has continued to employ the use of fake news, propaganda and falsehood in perpetrating lies and unfounded reports and publications against Nigeria’s security agencies,  especially the Nigerian Army and its leadership, on classified matters involving the operational approaches of our military and other security agencies in the ongoing war against the remnants of the degraded Boko Haram terrorist group, bandits and all other enablers of violent crimes in the country.

PETITION ON THE CONTINUED MEDIA INTERFERENCE AND CAMPAIGN OF CALUMNY AGAINST THE NIGERIAN ARMY BY SAHARA REPORTERS
(1) Sir, we the Coalition of Civil Society Groups Against Terrorism in Nigeria, bring you solidarity greetings and respectfully petition your good office, to please immediately act on behalf of our teeming members who are patriotic Nigerians, by taking steps towards stopping the continued blitz by an online media organization, Sahara Reporters and its publisher, one Mr Omoyele Sowore. He is a highly partisan individual, who has continued to employ the use of fake news, propaganda and falsehood in perpetrating lies and unfounded reports and publications against Nigeria’s security agencies,  especially the Nigerian Army and its leadership, on classified matters involving the operational approaches of our military and other security agencies in the ongoing war against the remnants of the degraded Boko Haram terrorist group, bandits and all other enablers of violent crimes in the country.
(2) Sir, as can be confirmed from a series of publications and reports by Sahara Reporters against the Nigerian Army, there is an indication of a strong sinister motive to undermine our nation’s national security policies through the instrumentality of fake news and to also destabilize our sustained efforts aimed at eradicating all forms of terror, violence and separatist activities which are threatening the unity and development of Nigeria.
(3) Sir, as patriotic Nigerians, we are increasingly worried about the various antics and activities of the platform Sahara Reporters and its promoters to incite Nigerians against the Nigerian Army and its leadership. It is becoming obvious that Sahara Reporters and its promoters have constituted themselves into a major opposition to the Nigerian State and our security agencies.
(4) Sir, we are really worried, and want to passionately appeal to your good office to interogate the actual motives of the promoters of Sahara Reporters  and its persistent destructive criticism of our security forces, who have spent the last few years working sometimes in extreme conditions towards ensuring that all forms of terrorism and violent crimes in the country are brought to a halt.
(5) Sir, as an independent non-govermental coalition, our observation shows that Sahara Reporters and its promoters are being used by some local and foreign interest to distract and undermine the Nigerian Army and its leadership while using the platform of Sahara Reporters to disseminate fake news and false narratives against the country, the Nigerian Army and more importantly to incite the personnel of the force against its leadership.
(6) Sir, we believe that broadcasting is meant to positively influence the society, set agenda for the social, cultural, economic, political and technological development of the society for the public good. We are also aware that the responsibility of any broadcaster is to inform, educate and entertain its audience, but not at the expense of national security and interest, unity and cohesion of Nigeria’s incredible diversity.
(7) Sir, there are clear indications that Sahara Reporters and its promoters are on a deliberate mission to sabotage our nation’s security policies by tacitly using its platform to initiate frivolous lies and unfounded accusations against the Nigerian Army and its leadership with a view to cause apathy between the Nigerian people and the Nigerian Army. This was the same c
(8) We also want you to note from our critical analysis of events, that whenever the criminal elements are dealth a serious blow by our gallant troops, Sahara Reporters will immediately release spurious allegations against our troops and their leaders. This often results in a hightened tempo of criminality in some flash points within the country.  We have further observed that Sahara Reporters plays a sinister role of according commendation and undeserved protection to criminal gangs terrorising our country and her people. This grossly unpatriotic act will gradually erode people’s confidence in the Nigerian Army, if drastic action is not taken.
(9) Sir, we therefore consider the many frivolous publications by Sahara Reporters against our nation’s security agencies especially the Nigerian Army as a direct attack, since the end state is not to advance the cause of the rights of our people, but rather to push narratives aimed at frustrating our security agencies thereby frustrating their efforts at defending Nigeria’s territorial  integrity and sovereignty.
(10) Sir, the leadership of the Nigerian Army under Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja has the enormous support of majority of the Nigerian people at all times, going by the strong commitment of officers and men of the Nigerian Army towards protecting our lives and properties. These acts of patriotism have therefore increased our conviction about the resolve of the Nigerian Army under the  COAS General Lagbaja to keep fighting for the unity and progress of our country and mutual coexistence, irrespective of the various attempts to distract them through propaganda and frivolous publications.
(11) Sir, we appeal to you to use your good office to treat Sahara Reporters and its promoters as an entity of interest and an enemy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who should not be allowed to continue their nefarious, seditious publictions, and subversive media operations again in Nigeria.
(12) Sir, by this petition we restate our unalloyed  support and solidarity for the President, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), his administration and his Renewed Hope Agenda to transform Nigeria into a true
giant of Africa.
A stitch in time saves nine.
Thank you sir.
