We Insist Ex-Speaker’s Removal Is Legal – Lagos Lawmakers

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have reaffirmed that the removal of former Speaker Hon. Mudashiru Obasa was conducted lawfully, in line with constitutional provisions.

In a statement issued after their appearance at the Lagos Command of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Shangisha, the lawmakers emphasized that the decision adhered strictly to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Powers and Privileges Act. They referenced Sections 92 and 96, which outline the procedures for electing and removing a Speaker, stressing that due process was followed.

“The Lagos State House of Assembly, as an independent arm of government, exercised its constitutional duty in the best interest of the people of Lagos. Any attempt to challenge this lawful action undermines the authority granted to us by the Nigerian Constitution,” the lawmakers stated.

They also commended the DSS for its professionalism and for ensuring a smooth and respectful engagement. All detained lawmakers have since been released.

Reiterating their commitment to legislative duties, the Assembly called on all stakeholders, including the executive and the public, to respect the sanctity of legislative processes and avoid undue interference.

Obasa’s Removal: Group Demands Release of Lagos Lawmakers Detained by DSS

A socio-political group, United Action for Democracy has called for the immediate release of several lawmakers detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Lagos following the removal of former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the group demanded the release of Hon. Abiodun Tobun (Epe 1), Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa 2), Hon. Femi Saheed (Kosofe 2), Hon. Kehinde Joseph, and others, insisting that their detention was unwarranted.

The development follows a press conference by Obasa, in which he argued that his removal was unconstitutional. Meanwhile, on Monday, the lawmakers reaffirmed Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda as the Speaker of the Assembly.

Lagos Court Remands Woman for Alleged Trafficking of Three Ladies to Ghana for Prostitution

A Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the remand of Rejoice John, alias Success, at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre for allegedly trafficking three young women to Ghana for prostitution.

Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke gave the order on Wednesday, pending the hearing and ruling on her bail application.

John is facing five-count charges filed by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

According to the prosecution, led by U.I. Egonu, the accused allegedly organized and facilitated the foreign travel of a 22-year-old woman, alias Queen, from Nigeria to Ghana in June 2024 for the purpose of prostitution.

After being deported from Ghana, John allegedly continued the illegal operation between June and September 2024, trafficking and harboring two more victims, alias Ella (21) and Grace (22).

The alleged offences violate Sections 18 and 15(b) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act 2015.

John pleaded not guilty to the charges. While the prosecution urged the court to deny bail due to the seriousness of the crime and its international implications, the defence counsel, E.O. Ajoku, argued that the offence is bailable and requested her release.

Justice Aneke adjourned the case to February 5, 2025, for a ruling on bail but ordered John to remain in Kirikiri Correctional Centre until then.

Will the court grant bail or uphold her remand? February 5 will be decisive.
