ARISE TV Anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu Killed in Abuja Robbery — Calls for Justice and Accountability

Abuja, Nigeria — The media community is in mourning following the death of Somtochukwu “Sommie” Christelle Maduagwu, a news anchor, reporter, and producer with ARISE News, who lost her life after an armed robbery at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja in the early hours of Monday, 29 September 2025.

Incident and Initial Reports
According to police confirmation, Ms. Maduagwu was attacked during an armed robbery at her home in Katampe and was pronounced dead following the incident.  The FCT Police Command, through its Public Relations Office, described the killing as “cruel and senseless” and pledged a discreet and comprehensive investigation.
The Police Commissioner for the FCT, Ajao Adewale, has ordered the deployment of intelligence and operational assets to track the perpetrators and has extended his condolences to Maduagwu’s family, colleagues, and the media fraternity.
Emerging Testimonies & Allegations of Negligence
A family friend, Kaanayo Nwachukwu, has provided a detailed and harrowing account of what occurred during the robbery, alleging police negligence and delayed response.  According to him:
Armed robbers reportedly swept through a six-flat apartment complex, moving from unit to unit, looting residents.
Maduagwu, hearing commotion, is said to have jumped from a window in an attempt to escape; she sustained critical injuries from the fall.
At the time police arrived, she was reportedly still alive. But, calls for immediate hospitalization were allegedly turned away due to claimed lack of fuel in the police vehicle.
She then made a call to a family friend, but by the time help arrived, she had passed away.
Reports alleged that Maitama General Hospital delayed her treatment on account of lacking identification. Hospital staff are said to have refused to treat her immediately; by the time identifying documents were produced, she had been moved to the morgue without proper communication.
The hospital’s conduct has drawn intense scrutiny, with calls for accountability in the handling of life-threatening emergencies regardless of identity documentation.
Personal Background & Public Response
Born on 26 December 1995, Somtochukwu Maduagwu was a trained lawyer and an articulate, rising voice in Nigerian journalism.  She joined ARISE News in 2024 and quickly made a mark with her poise and professionalism.
Tragically, just six weeks before her death, she had posted on social media:
“I pray from the depth of my heart that Nigeria never happens to me or anyone I care about.”
The post has since taken on haunting significance, as Nigerians reflect on the systemic challenges around security and emergency response systems.
Among those mourning her loss is former presidential candidate Peter Obi, who expressed deep sadness over the untimely passing of the journalist.
Next Steps & Calls for Justice
The FCT Police Command has affirmed ongoing investigations and urged public cooperation in providing information.
In the media, healthcare and security sectors, there are rising calls for reforms:
 • To ensure police responsiveness, especially in reports of violent crime.
 • To review hospital emergency protocols, so that lack of identification does not delay life-saving care.
Ms. Maduagwu’s passing is seen by many as more than just personal tragedy — a symbol of systemic failure, a clarion call for accountability, and an urgent reminder of the risks faced by journalists and citizens alike in Nigeria today.

“You Can’t Use Primate Ayodele To Score Points For Your Failed Political Ambitions” – Fulani Group Blasts Umar Ardo

Somtochukwu Maduagwu: How Primate Ayodele Warned Against Death Of Journalists In April (VIDEO)

If there is any prophet that reveals God’s mind towards media houses and journalists, it would Primate Elijah Ayodele, the leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church.

Through his prophecies, Primate Ayodele has warned several media houses and journalists about what they should pray about, even though he is also consistently praying for them.

His prophecies regarding media houses are borne out of his love for the profession and especially because of the country we are in, where journalists are not well appreciated. This is the reason he has also taken it upon himself to always celebrate journalists and media houses.

Annually, Primate Ayodele gives out nothing less than six cars to journalists and supports nothing less than 25 journalists with empowerments in six figures, both openly and privately.

In one of his several prophecies to media houses and journalists captured in a video, Primate Ayodele warned against the death of a popular newscaster in Nigeria. He urged media entrepreneurs and journalists to pray against the unfortunate incident that he foresees.

He specifically mentioned TV journalists as the recipients of his prophecy while asking them to pray for God’s protection.

In his words:

“TV presenters, news casters, TV broadcasters, pray for your lives, for God’s protection and pray for your family. God bless”

Sadly, it seems this prophetic warning has come to pass with the sad death of Arise TV’s news presenter, Somtochukwu Maduagwu.

In a statement obtained from Arise TV’s X handle on Monday, the 29-year-old broadcaster, affectionately known as Sommie, was a respected news anchor, reporter, and producer who had become a familiar and trusted face to viewers across the country.

The statement read, “It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of the ARISE News Channel announce the passing of our beloved colleague, News Anchor, Reporter, and Producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu. Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident in her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police.

“Sommie, 29, was not only a cherished member of the ARISE News family but also a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers.

“Beyond the airwaves, Sommie was a lawyer who was a professional and supportive colleague and a friend to many.”
