When Entitlement Meets Chaos: The Perilous Double Standards in Nigeria’s Skies.

In any airplane, the failure of one citizen to comply with the simplest safety instruction (turning off a phone) can imperil every life onboard. Yet in Nigeria’s aviation saga, we are witnessing scandal and prejudice masquerading as justice. The acts of Comfort Emmanson aboard Ibom Air and Fuji icon KWAM 1 at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport expose more than just rude behavior, they reveal glaring double standards that threaten national integrity and public safety.

The Stark Facts: Unruly Behavior, Unequal Consequences. Comfort Emmanson’s descent into chaos began with a basic safety directive: she refused to switch off her mobile phone before takeoff from Uyo to Lagos (despite it being standard aviation protocol. It was only switched off when another passenger intervened) a gesture that sparked a torrent of violence. She allegedly stepped on a co-passenger, tore off an air hostess’s wig and glasses, slapped multiple crew members and even attempted to use a fire extinguisher as a weapon, aggression that endangered the entire aircraft. She was forcibly removed, taken into custody, banned from flying with Ibom Air and remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre. The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) escalated the sanction, imposing a lifetime no-fly ban across all member airlines.

In stark contrast, Kwam 1 (Wasiu Ayinde Marshal) disrupted a ValueJet flight from Abuja to Lagos on August 5, 2025. He attempted to board with a flask; later confirmed to contain alcohol, violating aviation rules governing liquids. Despite repeated warnings, he resisted, allegedly poured its contents on a security officer and obstructed the aircraft on the tarmac, actions that were likened by NCAA spokesmen to terrorism. Authorities suspended the flight’s pilots for breaching safety protocols and placed Kwam 1 on a six-month aviation blacklist, while launching investigations and petitioning relevant law enforcement agencies.

We now see two extreme cases of aviation misconduct, but one was met with swift and unrelenting punitive measures; the other, with evident restraint, caution and delay.

“JUSTICE MUST BE FAIR, EQUAL AND NOT SELECTIVE”
Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, decried this glaring imbalance: “It is unacceptable that she was hurriedly taken to court and remanded, while someone who visibly held a plane from taking off and put hundreds of lives at risk is still at large… Justice in Nigeria must never be about who is poor or powerless versus who has influence.”

Obi’s words ring with moral force: justice that appears arbitrary or selective is no justice at all.

Expert Perspectives: Why Aviation Safety Profoundly Demands Impartiality. According to aviation safety experts, “compliance with cabin crew instructions. This is not a matter of courtesy, it is a critical component of inflight safety.” In regulated environments, misconduct can escalate to disastrous outcomes in seconds. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) mandates that passengers not only be informed but physically comply with protocol. For example, shutting off electronic devices. Non-compliance is not a trivial misdemeanor; it is a direct threat to the flight’s integrity.

Likewise, NCAA Director of Public Affairs, Mike Achimugu, warned that Kwam 1’s behavior could be considered terrorism in many jurisdictions, pointing to what happens when recognized figures evade strict enforcement of rules. The NCAA’s petitions to the Attorney-General and Inspector-General underscore their intent to uphold safety over status.

The Danger of IMPUNITY and the Damage of DISPARITY. When enforcement appears discretionary, we invite two festering ills:

Erosion of Rule of Law
If ordinary citizens are punished harshly, while high-profile personalities receive leniency or delay, PUBLIC TRUST in the SYSTEM CRUMBLES.

Systemic Safety Risk
Unruly behavior aboard aircraft isn’t just unruly, it is life-threatening. Continuously tolerating or downplaying it undercuts deterrence and could embolden future infractions.

A Call to Uniform Accountability.
To safeguard lives (and restore faith in our justice system) Nigeria must:
Apply the law uniformly, regardless of fame, influence or connections.

Ensure transparent, timely investigations into aviation misconduct, with penalties meted out for all, EQUALLY.

Communicate standards clearly, so all passengers understand that non-compliance triggers substantive consequences, without exaggeration or prejudice.

Parting Strike: Beauty Without Character, Status Without Solidarity. In her social media commentary, the phrase “BEAUTY WITHOUT CHARACTER is a CURSE” resonates powerfully here. Comfort Emmanson may not have been afforded leniency; but neither should stardom save KWAM 1 from full accountability. Nigeria must unmask the dangerous façade of selective justice.

Our skies (and our society) deserve better. Lives, whether low or high profile, must not be gambled with for the sake of image. A grounded justice is the only flight path toward real safety.
