The new FCT minister, Wike said Abuja should be kept clean, adding, “If you are in charge of sanitation, will call you at any time of the day.

Why Wike Banned Street Trading, Hawking In Abuja

Wike, the immediate past governor of Rivers State, announced on Tuesday while reading the management staff of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) the riot act.

He urged them to be committed to doing the “right things”.

“The important thing we must do is to ensure that Abuja is back to what it ought to be. I moved around Abuja and found out there is total darkness in most of the places.

“What we need to do is to ensure light comes back as soon as possible.”

He said Abuja should be kept clean, adding, “If you are in charge of sanitation, will call you at any time of the day.

“We shouldn’t allow motor parks all over the place. Something must be done as soon as possible. If you cannot meet up my standard, say it now so that we can change you.”

Wike noted that even though times are hard, that should not be an excuse for lawlessness in the capital city.

He said, “Street trading is prohibited. People selling corn will drop their waste indiscriminately and these are the things that cause insecurity,l. Criminals come to buy and use the opportunity to spy and give information to criminals. We must clear street hawkers.

“Development control is a serious crisis area, we have to stop. Why are there illegal structures and shanties everywhere? We will demolish any illegal structures. No matter how highly placed, the structure will come down.”

Lawyer Dele Farotimi Granted N30 Million Bail Amid Defamation Trial

An Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State has granted a N30 million bail to embattled lawyer and human rights activist, Dele Farotimi.

Delivering the ruling on Friday, Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun approved the bail request under strict conditions. Farotimi is required to provide two responsible sureties, surrender his international passport, and refrain from granting media interviews while the case is ongoing.

In a surprising development, Magistrate Adeosun barred Farotimi’s lead counsel, Olumide Fusika, SAN, from appearing before the court, citing Section 9 of the Magistrates’ Courts Law of 2014 as the basis for the decision.

Farotimi has pleaded not guilty to the defamation charge, which stems from allegations made by elder statesman and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Afe Babalola. The activist was arraigned following a petition accusing him of criminal defamation in his recently published book.

This is not the only legal battle Farotimi faces. On December 9, the Federal High Court in Ekiti granted him N50 million bail in a separate case involving a 12-count charge of cybercrime, filed by the Inspector-General of Police.

Farotimi’s trial, currently unfolding in two courts, underscores the high-stakes legal drama surrounding the prominent activist and author.
