Wilfred Ndidi reaches Leicester agreement

After the report that Nigeria international, Wilfred Ndidi, turned down a contract offer from Spanish club Sevilla, expressing his preference to remain in the Premier League, Footmercato says the midfielder is on the verge of signing a new contract with Leicester City.

Ndidi left the King Power Stadium at the end of last season as a free agent following the expiration of his contract and emerged as one of the most sought-after players with several clubs showing interest in the Nigerian.

Barcelona, Sevilla, Juventus, Everton and a host of others have all been linked with the combative midfielder who last season showcased his talent with the Foxes, contributing significantly to their return to the EPL with four goals, five assists, and maintaining an 82% pass accuracy across 32 league appearances.

His defensive capabilities, combined with his progressive play, make him a valuable asset.

Latest report has suggested that the former Genk player is set to return to Leicester.

“Wilfred Ndidi had all the makings of a good deal for OM, OL and AS Monaco. At the end of his contract with Leicester, the 27-year-old Nigerian international midfielder was inclined to discover a new environment and opened the door wide to Ligue 1,” the website wrote.

“Despite discussions with the clubs mentioned above, the man with 57 caps for the Super Eagles is not expected to cross the Channel this summer and for good reason.

“According to our information, Ndidi has reached an agreement with the Foxes for a contract extension. Good news for Leicester who will be able to count this season on a player who has been playing for 7 and a half years in the former club of Riyad Mahrez and N’Golo Kanté.”

While there has been no official announcement about his contract extension from the club or Ndidi’s camp, the player has been tipped to remain in England with Everton seriously interested in signing the player as replacement for Amadou Onana who has been heavily linked with a potential exit from Goodison Park.

Mali’s AFCON Star Coach Eric Chelle Joins Nigeria’s Super Eagles

Eric Chelle Tasked with Steering Super Eagles to 2026 World Cup

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced the appointment of Eric Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles. The decision was made following a recommendation by the NFF’s Technical and Development Sub-Committee during a meeting held on January 2, 2025. The appointment was officially approved by the NFF Executive Committee on January 7.

A Coach with Proven Expertise

Chelle, 47, brings a wealth of experience to the Super Eagles. The former Mali national team coach led the Eagles of Mali to the quarterfinals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire. Under his guidance, Mali narrowly missed out on a semifinal spot after a hard-fought 2-1 extra-time loss to the eventual tournament champions.

In addition to his international coaching achievements, Chelle has an impressive résumé at the club level, having managed teams such as GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran.

As a former player, Chelle represented French clubs including Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais. His vast experience both on and off the pitch is expected to bring fresh energy and tactical expertise to the Super Eagles.

Replacing Eguavoen and Addressing Challenges

Chelle replaces Austine Eguavoen, who served as interim coach following the resignation of Finidi George. George stepped down after Nigeria’s disappointing performances in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, which included a draw against South Africa and a shocking defeat to the Benin Republic.

The Super Eagles’ struggles in recent times have heightened expectations for Chelle’s tenure. Fans and stakeholders alike are eager for a turnaround under the new leadership.

Immediate Task: World Cup Qualification

Chelle’s first and foremost task will be to secure Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals. With a talented pool of players and passionate support from fans, the Super Eagles are expected to rise to the occasion under his guidance.

The NFF expressed confidence in Chelle’s ability to bring stability and success to the national team, describing his appointment as a step towards revitalizing Nigerian football.

The Road Ahead

As Chelle steps into his new role, all eyes will be on him to restore the Super Eagles’ dominance on the continent and beyond. His journey begins immediately, with preparations for upcoming qualifiers set to test his leadership and strategic vision.

Football Community Rallies Around Stanley Nwabali Following Mother’s Death

Johannesburg, South Africa – Barely two months after the tragic loss of his father, Super Eagles and Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has been dealt another devastating blow with the passing of his mother.

The South Africa-based player shared the heartbreaking news via X (formerly Twitter) on New Year’s Day, expressing his grief. “RIP mom, worst year of my life already,” Nwabali posted, accompanied by tears and heartbreak emojis.

The news comes as a shock to fans and well-wishers, particularly as Nwabali had earlier reflected positively on 2024, sharing a video recap of the year with an optimistic outlook for 2025. “2024 was a good year, we’re doubling everything in 2025. Thank you Chippa United FC. Thank you Super Eagles. Thanks to all my fans. Let’s do more!” he wrote in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) expressed their support for the grieving player, sending a heartfelt message via their official social media channels.
“Our heartfelt condolences to Stanley Nwabali on the loss of his mother. Stay strong, Stanley. Sending you strength and support during this difficult time. You are not alone; we are all with you,” the statement read.

Another fan, Hillary Remy, wrote, “So sorry for your loss. May God strengthen you and all your family members.”

Adewale Damilare added, “Accept my heartfelt condolences, chief.”

A Year of Personal Tragedies

Nwabali’s father passed away in November 2024, just hours after the goalkeeper played for the Super Eagles in their 1-1 draw against the Benin Republic during a penultimate 2025 AFCON qualification match. The cause of his mother’s death has not been disclosed, but it has added to what Nwabali described as a “crazy world” in his social media posts.

Despite his personal tragedies, the 27-year-old goalkeeper remains a pillar of strength for his club, Chippa United, and the Nigerian national team. As he mourns this latest loss, the footballing community continues to rally around him with messages of support and prayers.

Manchester United Stunned by Wolves in Boxing Day Setback, Pile Pressure on Ruben Amorim

Manchester United’s turbulent season continued on Boxing Day as they fell to a 2-0 defeat against Wolves at Molineux, marking their fifth loss in seven matches under new manager Ruben Amorim.

Manchester United Stunned by Wolves in Boxing Day Setback, Pile Pressure on Ruben Amorim

The decisive moment came in astonishing fashion when Matheus Cunha scored directly from a corner, catching United’s stand-in goalkeeper, Altay Bayındir, off guard. The goal mirrored a similar error just a week ago when United conceded directly from a corner in their Carabao Cup clash against Tottenham, exposing a worrying pattern in their defensive setup under Amorim.

United’s woes were compounded early in the second half when Bruno Fernandes received his marching orders for a second yellow card after a reckless challenge on Nelson Semedo. Reduced to 10 men, the Red Devils struggled to mount a comeback and were eventually punished with Wolves’ second goal late in the match.

This defeat amplifies the scrutiny on Amorim, whose side has repeatedly faltered in defending set-pieces. In his short tenure, United have conceded from corners against Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Spurs, Bournemouth, and now Wolves—a glaring weakness that has cost the team dearly.

Despite the growing pressure, the Portuguese manager remains defiant, stating after the match, “I will continue with my idea until the end.”

Fans and pundits alike are questioning whether Amorim’s philosophy is a good fit for the club. With mounting losses and a lack of defensive organization, the manager faces an uphill battle to turn United’s fortunes around as the season progresses.

Wolves, on the other hand, celebrated their Boxing Day triumph, with Matheus Cunha standing out as the star performer. The victory moves them further up the table and provides a much-needed boost to their campaign.

For Manchester United, however, the Boxing Day defeat is yet another chapter in what is shaping up to be a season of frustration and disappointment.
