Gani Adams replaces MKO Abiola as Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba Land

The leader of the Oduduwa Peoples Congress, Gani Adams, is the new ‘Aare Ona Kakanfo’, which in the pre-colonial Yoruba history was a supreme military title conferred by the Alaafin of Oyo.

The Alaafin, Lamidi Adeyemi, confirmed the choice of Mr. Adams for the title during his 79th birthday celebration on Sunday. The development was also confirmed by a spokesperson for Mr. Adams, Segun Akanni, who said his principal had received a letter of appointment from the Alaafin.

Mr. Adams will be replacing late business mogul and politician, Moshood Abiola, who died in July 1998. The late businessman had been imprisoned by the military government of Sani Abacha, following his struggle to claim his June 12 1993 presidential election victory and be inaugurated president.

Mr. Abiola earned the Aare Ona Kakanfo title in 1988. Before him, the second Premier of the old Western Region, Ladoke Akintola, was the holder of the title, which he held between 1962 and 1966, the year he died in Nigeria’s first coup.

Only Messrs. Akintola and Abiola held the title in the modern time.

The title was created some centuries ago by Alaafin Ajagbo during the reign of the Oyo Empire, which, at the peak of its glory, covered most of the present day Southwestern Nigeria, parts of Kwara State, including Ilorin, and parts of the present day Benin Republic, then called Dahomey.

In fact, the last Yoruba monarch of Ilorin, Afonja, was an Aare Ona Kakanfo, before the town fell to Fulani Jihadists at the start of the 19th century.

In the olden days, the title holder led old Oyo Empire’s military expeditions and was chosen from outside Oyo to avoid friction with the Alaafin.

But in the modern time, the title has been reserved for very influential individuals, with enormous goodwill and massive political influence as well as economic resources, for instance Mr. Akintola and Mr. Abiola.

The Alaafin said Mr. Adams had been at the vanguard of promoting Yoruba culture and defending the interests of the group.

“The OPC National Coordinator is a focused, committed and pragmatic Nigerian whose unrelented efforts and sense of devotion in the vanguard of making Yoruba traditional religion a reference point in global circles is inspiring, laudable and worthy of emulation,” said the Alaafin.

The monarch said a press conference would be held later to formally declare Mr. Adams the new Aare Ona Kakanfo and the reasons he was so honoured from the list of five persons he had considered.

Polytechnic Students Declare Massive Protest at OPAY Headquarters Over Alleged Bias Against HND Holders and Campus Scholarship Neglect

The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), the umbrella body representing over 28.1 million students across Nigeria’s polytechnics, monotechnics, and allied institutions, has declared a massive protest scheduled for Thursday, December 19, 2024 at OPAY’s headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos. This demonstration comes in response to OPAY’s alleged perpetuation of the HND/BSc dichotomy and neglect of polytechnic students in its scholarship schemes.
NAPS has accused OPAY Microfinance Bank of fostering inequality by granting scholarships exclusively to university students, including a ₦12 million scholarship for 40 ABU Zaria students and a decade-long scholarship agreement with the University of Ibadan, while ignoring polytechnic institutions.
“It is disappointing that an institution like OPAY, which we’ve supported through thick and thin, has chosen to undermine polytechnic students, treating us as second-class citizens,” said Senator Adeniji Boluwaji Temitope, NAPS Senate President. “Polytechnic campuses account for the highest OPAY POS users in Nigeria, yet we have been sidelined.”
Further allegations include claims that OPAY prioritizes BSc holders over HND holders during recruitment, a practice NAPS described as discriminatory and contrary to the principle of competence over certification.
To protest these actions, NAPS is mobilizing polytechnic students, especially from Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos states, to converge at OPAY’s headquarters. Students are advised to bring mats and cooking supplies, as they intend to remain at the premises until their demands are met. Additionally, NAPS has declared all OPAY POS machines persona non grata across polytechnic campuses nationwide, urging Student Union Governments to enforce this ban.
NAPS remains open to dialogue but has issued an ultimatum leading up to the protest, demanding immediate action from OPAY to address their grievances.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched an investigation into Azman Air over allegations of illegally delivering an aircraft to Iran, reportedly enabling the country to bypass U.S.-imposed sanctions.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) confirmed the inquiry, though it noted that smuggling activities primarily fall under the jurisdiction of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

Speaking on the matter, NCAA spokesperson Mike Achimugu said, “These are weighty allegations. While smuggling is under the purview of Customs, we have forwarded the matter to the relevant directorates for investigation.”

The allegations stem from a report by the Middle East Forum Observer, which claimed Azman Air delivered an Airbus A340-642 widebody passenger aircraft to Iran’s largest airline, Mahan Air, on November 15, 2024. The aircraft, which departed from Kano, reportedly switched off its Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) transponder mid-flight after entering Iranian airspace and later landed at Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport.

Mahan Air, a sanctioned airline linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, is accused of using African connections to circumvent long-standing U.S. sanctions on its aviation sector. The report claims Nigerian authorities were negligent, allowing Mahan Air to exploit the situation to acquire the aircraft.

Further allegations suggest that French authorities intercepted another Azman Air Airbus A340-642 on December 11, 2024, at Châteauroux Airport in France. The aircraft was allegedly en route to Kaduna, Nigeria, where it was to be temporarily stored, re-registered, and flown to Iran.

Attempts to contact Azman Air’s Chairman, Abdulmunaf Sarina, were unsuccessful as his phone line remained busy at the time of the report.

The Middle East Forum Observer alleged that Mahan Air relies on acquiring aircraft like the Airbus A340-642 through intermediaries in African nations, including Nigeria, Gambia, and Burkina Faso. These aircraft, equipped with Rolls-Royce engines, are said to be crucial for maintaining Mahan Air’s operations, including cargo and personnel transport linked to military activities.

The report further called on U.S. authorities to strengthen monitoring of aircraft movements in Africa and impose sanctions on organizations allegedly enabling Iran’s sanctions evasion.

The Federal Government has promised a thorough investigation to determine Azman Air’s role in the matter and ensure Nigeria’s aviation sector remains compliant with international laws and sanctions.
