Jimoh Ibrahim Gets Senate’s Approval On Ayetoro Intervention

…As Senate President Commends Him, Orders Immediate Probe Of Intervention Fund

Senator representing Ondo South at the floor of the Senate, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, CFR on Tuesday presented a paper on the plight of the residents of Ayetoro community in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, urging the Senate to compel Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to, as a matter of urgency, prevent the community from being washed off by the Atlantic Ocean.
He urged the Senate to give NDDC to work with relevant Federal ministries to embark on intervention project that would prevent the seaside community from sea incursion which wreaked havoc in the community annually.
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio upholding of the Senate, gave the approval for immediate intervention to be carried out in the community
Commending Senator Ibrahim for presenting the plight of the people of Ayetoro before the lawmakers, the President of the Senate ordered immediate probe of the intervention fund.
In his presentation, Senator Ibrahim told the Senate that the community was responsible for 5.4 percent of the total crude oil production in Ondo State and oil exploration activities in the community have been undermined by the natural disasters that had rendered many residents homeless.
According to the senator, “Ayetoro Community and its environment account for 5.4 % of the 60,000 barrel per day of Ondo State’s crude oil  production output amounting to about 3.7 % of Nigeria’s total oil production and this ranks Ondo State as the 5th Nigeria’s’ oil producing states, under the Niger Delta Development Commission ( NDDC) Act.)
He, however, lamented that “devasting sea incursion and ocean surges have been the albatross of the Ayetoro community for over two decades with hundreds of homes and properties being destroyed annually resulting in displacement of indigenes of the community and consequently, in the disruption of oil exploration in the area.”
Going memory lane, Ibrahim said: “The oil producing Ayetoro is a phenomenal historical and cultural settlement along the coaster stretch of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State and is also a major source of revenue for the nation.
“Also Ayetoro Community used to be one of the most prosperious riverine settlements in Nigeria due to its thriving trade in fish.”
Senator Ibrahim, however, is disturbed that “the surges have become an annual occurrence that successive governments have failed to attend to and serving a daily reminder to the indigenes of Ayetoro that the  community is gradually slipping into the belly of the Atlantic Ocean.”
He told the Senate that there had been attempted intervention moves in the past, particularly by NDDC to save the estwhile communist community, but the N6.4 billion contract hit the rock as it didn’t see the light of day.

Ibrahim urged the Senate to mandate investigation into the failed contract for the construction of a shoreline protective wall designed with Geo-tube technology.
He briefed the Senate on the intervention attempts made by NDDC to save the coastline community, saying “I am aware that a concerned interventionalist agency, the Niger Delta Development Commission ( NDDC) as early as 2004, just four years after its creation, made a commendable attempt to stem the slide by awarding the contract for the construction of a shoreline protective wall designed with Geo-tube technology in Ayetoro to Gallet Nigeria Limited at an original contract sum of 6.4 billion naira, of which 25 per cent was reportedly paid;
“Also, I am aware that the said contract was revoked in 2009 for alleged lack of capacity and reawarded to Dredging Atlantic Limited at an undisclosed cost, however, eleven years after the new contractor took over, and sixteen years after the contract was first awarded, there is nothing on ground to show any intervention by the government, thereby creating the wrong impression of an unconcerned Federal Government.”
Pleading with the Senate to do something urgent about the plight of the people, Ibrahim said: “The Senate should mandate the committed on NDDC, Environmental and Ecology ( when constituted/to interface with relevant ministries to work out modalities for instant intervention in the disasters.
“Also mandate the committed on NDDC (when constituted) to conduct an investigation into the N 6.5 billion – Shoreline protection contact awarded by the NDDC in 2006 with a view to finding an alternative solution where necessary , to stem the dangerous slide and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.”

Fuji Mi, Fuji Mi, The Source : A Journey Through The History And Leadership of Fuji Music

By Alhaji Arems

Fuji music, a genre deeply rooted in the cultural tapestry of Nigeria, has a rich history that dates back several decades. This article aims to take fans and the general public down memory lane, tracing the origins of Fuji music, its key figures, and the leadership that has shaped its evolution. It’s crucial to acknowledge and celebrate the pioneers who laid the foundation for this vibrant musical genre and correct any misconceptions that have arisen, especially among the younger generation.

Fuji Mi, Fuji Mi, The Source : A Journey Through The History And Leadership of Fuji Music

By Alhaji Arems

The Beginnings of Fuji Music :

Fuji music emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s, primarily within the Yoruba community of Nigeria. It was an evolution of the were music—a traditional Islamic music genre played during the Ramadan season. Fuji music blended elements of were, apala, and juju music to create a distinctive sound characterized by its energetic percussion, vibrant rhythms, and engaging call-and-response vocals.

The Pioneer : Alhaji Sikiru Ayinde Barrister

The genesis of Fuji music is closely tied to the name Alhaji Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, widely regarded as the creator and undisputed leader of Fuji music. Born on February 9, 1948, Barrister’s innovative approach transformed were music into Fuji, infusing it with modern instrumentation and dynamic stage performances. His impact on Fuji music was profound, as he popularized the genre both within Nigeria and internationally, earning a loyal fanbase that spans generations.

Leadership in Fuji Music: Past and Present :

Following the death of Barrister in 2010, the mantle of leadership within Fuji music has often been a topic of discussion. Alhaji Kollington Ayinla, another prominent figure in the Fuji music scene, is widely acknowledged as the current leader. Kollington, known for his unique style and powerful lyrics, played a significant role in shaping Fuji music alongside Barrister. His contributions to the genre are invaluable, and it is essential to recognize his position and influence within the Fuji community.

Correcting Misconceptions And Honoring Legacy :

In recent times, there has been a growing trend among younger Fuji artists and fans—often referred to as the “Indomie Generation”—to overlook the contributions of foundational figures like Kollington Ayinla. Some have even begun to lay claims to titles and positions that rightfully belong to the pioneers of Fuji music. This publication seeks to correct these misconceptions and ensure that due credit is given where it is deserved.

Kollington Ayinla, as the rightful heir to the leadership of Fuji music, deserves respect and recognition. While it is important to acknowledge the contributions of emerging artists, it should never come at the expense of those who paved the way for Fuji music to flourish. The legacy of pioneers like Barrister and Kollington must be preserved and celebrated, not overshadowed by contemporary claims.

Enlightening The New Generation :

It is imperative for the younger generation to be educated about the history and origins of Fuji music. Understanding the genre’s roots, the sacrifices and innovations of its pioneers, and the cultural significance it holds will foster a greater appreciation and respect for Fuji music. This knowledge will ensure that the legacy of Fuji music remains intact and that its leadership is rightfully honored.

Fuji music is more than just a genre; it is a cultural treasure that embodies the spirit and resilience of the Nigerian people. By acknowledging and celebrating the pioneers who created and shaped Fuji music, we preserve its rich history and ensure that future generations understand and respect its origins. As we look to the future of Fuji music, let us remember the words of Barrister and Kollington, who through their artistry, have left an indelible mark on the world of music.
