Labour Party Disassociates Self From Interim Executive Committee

Labour Party Disassociates Self From Interim Executive Committee.

The National Leadership of the Labour Party has disassociated itself from a self styled group called the Interim Executive Committee (IEC) which has been attempting to hijack the leadership of the Labour Party in Ogun state.

A statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh, revealed that the only legally recognised Executive of the Labour Party in Ogun state is the Engr Lookman Abiodun Jagun led Caretaker Committee which was constituted by the National Executive Committee (NEC), the highest organ of the party.

The statement further states that the Interim Executive Committee is an aberration and it is unknown to both the constitution of the Labour Party and the National Leadership of the party. The members of the self styled IEC are usurpers attempting to hijack the structure of the party for their own selfish benefits.

The Labour Party has a structure and a valid constitution that governs its operations and all members are expected to abide by the Party’s constitution. The party does not permits or encourages members to arrogate powers and functions to themselves, without recourse to the constitution or the National Leadership.

Faithful partymen and women in Ogun state are advised to be wary of the antics and activities of the self styled IEC, as they do not enjoy the support or validation of the National Leadership of the Labour Party.

We also urge every member and intending members to subject themselves to the ongoing e-membership registration and revalidation exercise to be able to participate in the activities of the party, including the congresses that will commence in February 2025 across the nation.

2027: Residents Push For Ambode’s Return As Lagos Governor

Some residents have urged the former Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode to join the race for the 2027 governorship race, saying he has the Midas touch to transform the state if given the second chance to complete the good job he started.

It would be recalled that Ambode who governed the state from 2015 – 2019 lost the ticket of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) under controversial circumstances during the primary election, a development that denied him a second term in office.

However, residents of the nation’s commercial nerve centre under the aegis of Lagos Residents Association (LRA) in a statement by its President General, Dr. Olumuyiwa Adesanmi urged the Lagos State chapter of the APC to give its governorship ticket to the former governor.

Adesanmi said it is the constitutional right of the one-term governor to seek a second term, saying the circumstances under which he lost the party’s ticket for a second term was suspicious.

The group therefore urged the former governor to join in the race to succeed the incumbent governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu whose second term in office will end in 2027.

He said, “Former Gov. Ambode enjoys humongous support among residents of Lagos whose lives he touched positively while in office. We all understand how he lost his bid for a second term in office and not on the ground of performance.

“The legacy he left behind both in human capital development, infrastructure and total transformation of Lagos is still there for all to see.

“We residents of the state are solidly behind him and calling him to come back and complete what he has started in our dear state”, the group demanded.

It has also volunteered to purchase the nomination and expression of interest forms of the governing APC for the former governor to contest the 2027 governorship election.

Lagos 2025 Budget Scales Second Reading

– Speaker gives committee 1 month to report back

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday debated the 2025 appropriation bill of N3.005 trillion presented to the lawmakers by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu last Thursday.

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who presided over the plenary, committed the bill to a joint committee on appropriation and finance for review with a mandate to report back in one month.

Earlier, Chairman of the House Committee on Budget and Economic Planning, Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh, provided an overview of the proposed spending with a breakdown of items in the estimate.

While raising concerns over the projection of N408 billion deficit financing in the budget, Olumoh, who noted that loans are good when used for the actual purposes, added: “We have to be cautious about it. We need to have a sustainable and pragmatic way of financing our budget so that we don’t rely solely on loans.

“So I would suggest that we look at a realistic budget and ways to finance it using alternatives like the Public Private Partnership models.

“I also want to implore my colleagues that for the purpose of the 2025 budget, we need to properly scrutinise it to prevent wastage.”

He commended the government for its intentions as stipulated in the budget estimate.

Deputy Majority Leader Adedamola Richard Kasumu called for a careful review of the budget to enable comparative analysis and feasibility.

Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa 2) noted the absence of allocations for electricity infrastructure and climate change initiatives while suggesting a five-year retrospective analysis of deficit funding.

His colleague, Hon. Femi Sheed, stressed the importance of linking borrowing to critical infrastructure like electricity while ensuring revenue efficiency and addressing potential financial leakages.

On his part, Hon. Desmond Elliot highlighted the omission of food security measures in the proposal while urging the inclusion of initiatives to meet citizens’ needs.

Recall that Governor Sanwo-Olu told the lawmakers that the budget aims to achieve a 59% capital expenditure and 41% recurrent expenditure ratio with a deficit financing to be sourced through external and internal loans and bonds.
