Lagos State First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday emphasized the need for the advocacy against indiscriminate waste disposal to be disseminated in indigenous languages to drive home the message of proper waste management in line with international best practices.
Sanwo-Olu said this while receiving members of the Statewide Waste & Environmental Education Foundation (SWEEP) who embarked on special advocacy walk against waste in partnership with various organizations including the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lagos State Community Development Advisory Committee (CDAC), Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN), National Coalition Against Plastic Pollution, Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Network and National Youth Council, among others.
The First Lady, who commended the organizers of the advocacy walk for believing in the vision of Mr Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu to ensure proper waste management in line with Sustainable Development Goals, said it was important for the message to be broken down into different languages for people to imbibe the essence of clean environment.
She said the task to ensure clean environment requires a collective effort, just as she tasked members of the entertainment industry to come up with various songs to further create awareness on the need to ensure sustainable waste management.
“Cleanliness is next to Godliness. It’s something we can do. Considering that the war against waste will be launched in the three senatorial districts, I am so happy that we have a baseline that we are looking at and we also have scorecards. The issue of cleanliness requires collective effort. Mr Governor cannot do it alone; the cabinet cannot do it alone and so it is a joint effort by all of us.
“I like the fact that we are going the route of campaigning, creating awareness and advocacy. We need to continuously repeat this. it is a very important task because no matter how much money we spend getting the trucks and getting the dustbins, if we don’t continuously create this awareness among our people in the different languages, the result will be the same.
“In Lagos alone, we have Egun, Ilaje, Awori, the Yorubas, the Ibos, the Hausas, the Ijebus, the Ghanaians, the Togolese, among others. So, Lagos alone has so many languages and when we want to interpret, we have to interpret in all those languages. The entertainment industry too, I am happy we have PMAN here, the songs will go a long way in communicating to the people the need to keep the state clean,” she said.
She said aside the nexus between waste management and health, the issue of clean environment was equally important in creating investment opportunities in the State and country.
“When we go abroad, when we go to neighboring countries, we see what it is and we like it and everybody wants to run away from Nigeria to go and spend some time for holidays abroad.
“However, we can do it here; we want people to be coming to Lagos. That is what we want; it has to be the other way round. They have to come to Lagos and invest and that is what we want,” she said.
Also speaking, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Office of Environmental Services, Mrs Belinda Odeneye urged residents to key into the waste to wealth initiative of the State Government, saying people must understand that waste should not and must not be wasted.
Earlier, the Convener of the walk and President of SWEEP Foundation, Obuesi Philips said the walk was aimed at driving community awareness and involvement in sustainable waste prevention.
“The “Walk-Against-Waste” is designed to create massive statewide awareness, catalyze new grassroot orientation on environmental sanitation, waste prevention and sustainable waste management,” Philips said.
The walk started at Awolowo House, Ikeja, proceeded through Allen Avenue and terminated in front of the Lagos State House of Assembly complex, Alausa, Ikeja.

11 states Received Alerts Over planned Release Of lagdo dam By Cameroon
By shonibare Timileyin
The Federal Government on Tuesday alerted Nigerians to the water release from Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.
The FG made this known in a press statement signed by the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, Umar Muhammed.
The statement noted that the authorities of the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon will initiate controlled water releases starting from Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
It said the water discharge is anticipated to progressively escalate to 1000m³/s over the next seven days based on the inflow from the upstream Garoua River.
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency wishes to notify the general public that the authorities of the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon have communicated to the agency that they will initiate controlled water releases at a rate of 100m³/s (8,640,000m³/day) starting today, 17 September 2023.
“The water discharge is anticipated to progressively escalate to 1000m³/s over the next seven days based on the inflow from the upstream Garoua River, which serves as the primary source into the reservoir and a significant tributary to the Benue River.
“Nonetheless, the dam operators have indicated that the planned water discharges will be gradual to avoid surpassing the conveyance capacity of the Benue river system and triggering substantial flooding downstream in Nigeria. The overflow from the Lagdo Dam is projected to cease once there is a noticeable reduction in the flow into the Lagdo reservoir,” the statement read in part.
The agency, however, said there was no cause for alarm.
“The agency unequivocally states that there is no need for alarm as major flooding downstream in Nigeria is not anticipated since the flow levels along the Benue River are still within cautionary limits.
“Nevertheless, it is of utmost importance for all states bordering the Benue River system, namely: Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers, and Rivers, along with the government at all levels (federal, state, and LGAs) to heighten their vigilance and implement appropriate preparedness measures to mitigate potential flooding impacts that may arise due to an increase in flow levels of our major rivers during this period.
“The agency will continue to diligently monitor the flow conditions of the transboundary Benue River and the national inland rivers, and consistently provide regular updates on water levels across major rivers to prevent further flood disasters,” it added.
The dam is located in the Northern Province of Cameroon, on the Benue River, in the Niger basin. The lake covers an area of 586
The release of water from Lagdo Dam has long been a cause for concern for many in Nigeria as it affects many states because it serves as the entry point of River Benue.
Last week, there was a devastating flood in Borno State which killed over 30 persons and affected over a million citizens in the state.
