The Selfless GAJ… Hon. Ganiyu Abiodun Johnson

Being Selfless is an act not so common in many of our leaders in Nigeria of today but Hon. Ganiyu Abiodun Johnson stands tall in this regard amongst his political contemporaries not by words but by actions.

Hon. Ganiyu Johnson, a member of the hallowed Green Chambers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is a model politician in a class of his own. Representing the good people of Oshodi-Isolo Constituency 2, Hon. Johnson exemplifies the true meaning of a public servant.

A revered engineer, Hon. Ganiyu Johnson rose to the Zenith of his career as the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Infrastructure in Lagos State before he was appointed as the Special Adviser to the then Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN on Works and Infrastructure, and subsequently the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure in Lagos State during the administration of Governor AkinwunmiAmbode.

Hon. Johnson during his spell as both SA and Commissioner was instrumental to major infrastructural landmark projects in the State to include but not limited to the first of its kind Lekki-Ikoyi Cable Link bridge, Okota-Surulere Bridge, Ago Palace-FestacRoad amongst many others.

GAJ as he is popularly called has impacted immeasurably to the people of his Constituency since he was elected as a Member of the Federal House of Representatives two years ago through various interventionist policies and projects.

He made it a point of duty to regularly and continually interact and engage his Constituency through the inventive Meet Your MP program, Hon. Johnson initiated the FOOD4ALL project during the Covid-19 lockdown to support the vulnerable in his Constituency.

Hon. GaniyuAbiodun Johnson has also embarked on series of construction, renovation, and rehabilitation of schools and classrooms across his Constituency. He procures JAMB, WAEC, and NECO forms for indigent students with free tutorial coaching. GAJ also avails his people of different skill acquisition programs and empowerment projects for the youth and women.

Little wonder why just midway into his tenure as a Federal House of Representatives member, the yearnings and clamor of his people for him to continue the good works has enveloped the entire Oshodi-Isolo Constituency 2.

As we inch closer to the 2023 general elections in the country, we hope and look forward to seeing more of the likes of GAJ – a selfless politician

Osun State Political Violence: APC, PDP Trade Blame Over Killings and Clashes

Violent clashes between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have escalated tensions in Osun State, resulting in the death of a former chairman of Irewole Local Government Area, Mr. Aderemi Abbas, and six others. The violence erupted on Monday following a contentious Court of Appeal ruling allegedly reinstating APC-elected local government chairmen and councillors.

Governor Ademola Adeleke had earlier raised alarms on Sunday, accusing Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, and certain security agency heads of plotting to enforce the ruling and instigate chaos. Adeleke called on the public to hold Oyetola and state security chiefs accountable for any violence.

Clashes at Local Government Secretariats

On Monday, violence erupted at various local government secretariats as APC and PDP supporters clashed, resulting in deaths and multiple injuries. A video showed Abbas, elected as chairman in 2018, lying in a pool of blood with an open head wound.

An anonymous security source revealed that Abbas was killed during a bloody confrontation between party supporters wielding guns and machetes. “At 11:56 a.m., Abbas and his men tried to access the local government premises in Ikire, leading to a confrontation with PDP members. Many were wounded, and one person was shot dead immediately,” the source stated.

In Boripe Local Government Area, two people were reportedly shot dead in Iragbiji as APC members attempting to access the council secretariat met armed resistance allegedly led by PDP supporters. Similar violence occurred in Isokan and Olaoluwa LGAs, where gunfights left multiple casualties.

In Olorunda LGA, APC members’ attempts to seize the council secretariat prompted heavy police intervention. Hoodlums armed with weapons intimidated bystanders and smashed phones of those recording the chaos.

Violence also spread to Egbedore, Ayedaade, and Ife-East LGAs, with reports of shootings, injuries, and attacks on political convoys. The Executive Director of the Federal Housing Authority, Abuja, Mr. Remi Omowaiye, alleged his convoy was attacked near Ilesa West secretariat by PDP thugs, resulting in bullet injuries to his driver and security aides.

Police Response

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun ordered additional tactical squads to Osun State to curb the violence. In a statement by Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi, the police condemned the incidents, vowing to identify and prosecute the perpetrators.

“The Nigeria Police Force condemns the violence that has disrupted peace in Osun State. The IGP has directed immediate reinforcement of security in the affected areas,” the statement read. “Violence undermines democracy and public safety. Those responsible will face the full weight of the law.”

The IGP warned against further acts of lawlessness and assured residents of increased security to restore order.

Political Parties React

The APC expressed deep sorrow over the violence and loss of lives. Former Special Adviser on Education to ex-Governor Oyetola, Jamiu Olawumi, lamented, “We lost people in Irewole, Isokan, and Olaoluwa LGAs. Hon. Remi Abbas was killed on his way to resume at the council office. Additionally, a councilor in Isokan was murdered, and APC members in Iragbiji, Osogbo, and Olorunda were attacked.”

The PDP, in turn, condemned what it described as coordinated attacks by APC hoodlums. PDP Director of Media Oladele Bamiji claimed five party members were killed, and over 50 injured across Boripe, Olaoluwa, Isokan, and Ilesa West LGAs.

“In Boripe, two PDP members were gruesomely murdered, and over 20 sustained injuries during preparations for a rally,” Bamiji said. He accused security personnel of complicity, claiming some officers either participated in or ignored the attacks.

During a heated debate on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Osun Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy, Kolapo Alimi, accused the APC of orchestrating the violence. “The governor has directed everyone to stay away from local government offices, but despite this, five PDP members were killed. We urge the President to intervene to bring peace,” he said.

APC National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru countered, accusing the PDP of instigating the violence. “Our chairman, Hon. Remi Abbas, was murdered by PDP thugs. Another member was attacked. This is barbaric,” he stated.

Calls for Federal Intervention

The Osun State National Assembly caucus accused Gboyega Oyetola of collaborating with security agents to disrupt local government operations. Speaking on behalf of the caucus, Hon. Salam alleged a coordinated takeover of local government offices by sacked APC officials, accompanied by armed thugs.

“Osun residents woke up to criminal takeovers of local government offices by sacked officials, accompanied by gunfire. These acts threaten the peace enjoyed under Governor Adeleke’s administration,” Salam stated, urging President Tinubu to intervene.

The situation remains tense, with heightened security and political tensions threatening further unrest in Osun State.

CHAOS IN LAGOS: DSS INVASION SPARKS TENSION AT STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY

CHAOS IN LAGOS: DSS INVASION SPARKS TENSION AT STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY

In a dramatic turn of events on Monday, the Lagos State House of Assembly descended into chaos as operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) stormed the premises. The invasion, reportedly authorized by the Assembly Clerk, led to heated confrontations, tears, and widespread condemnation from lawmakers.

The crisis unfolded when lawmakers, led by Speaker Mojisola Meranda, forcefully gained entry into the hallowed chamber to declare their support for her leadership. This development came amid rising tensions over attempts by ousted Speaker Mudashiru Obasa to reclaim his position.

CHAOS IN LAGOS: DSS INVASION SPARKS TENSION AT STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY

DSS INVOLVEMENT AND CLERK’S LETTER The Assembly Clerk, A. T. B. Ottun, had written to the DSS on February 14, 2025, requesting enhanced security at the Assembly complex due to concerns over Obasa’s potential return. The letter, titled “URGENT: ENHANCED SECURITY MEASURES FOR LSHA PREMISES,” cited a “potential security threat to the Assembly and its members” and called for strict access control.

However, confusion erupted when DSS operatives sealed off key offices, including those of the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker, and the Acting Clerk, and restricted access to the legislative chamber. Assembly workers and lawmakers, shocked by the heavy presence of armed operatives clad in black jackets, helmets, and face masks, resisted the move, leading to tense confrontations.

MELEE IN THE CHAMBER The scheduled plenary, initially set for 11:00 a.m., was delayed until 12:51 p.m. Speaker Meranda, surrounded by security and assembly staff, was seen in tears as about 36 lawmakers and assembly workers rallied around her in solidarity. Despite the delays and heightened tensions, Meranda eventually presided over the seventh plenary since Obasa’s ousting.

LAWMAKERS SPEAK OUT During the plenary, multiple lawmakers condemned the DSS’s actions. Kehinde Joseph (Alimosho 1), who raised a motion under Personal Explanation, called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and hold those responsible accountable.

Stephen Ogundipe (Oshodi/Isolo 1) described the incident as a “rape of democracy,” while Sabur Oluwa (Ajeromi-Ifelodun 2) decried the DSS conduct as “unnecessary and unprofessional.” Oluwa added, “We were elected to represent the people. If we choose to elect a new leader, that is democracy. This does not justify harassment or assault on our legislative process.”

Other lawmakers, including Gbolahan Ogunleye (Ikorodu 1) and Femi Saheed (Kosofe 2), also expressed outrage, demanding thorough investigations and swift justice. Ogunleye said, “I never imagined a day when armed men would storm the Lagos Assembly. This is a blatant violation of democratic principles.”

ASSEMBLY CLARIFIES INVITATION TO DSS In a statement issued by Assembly spokesperson Kayode Ogundipe late Monday, the Assembly clarified its stance on the DSS presence.

“Earlier today, lawmakers and staff arrived to find key offices locked and the chamber sealed. While the Assembly did request security support from the DSS, at no point did we instruct them to invade the legislative chamber or lock offices,” the statement read. “The sanctity of the Lagos State House of Assembly was undermined today by actions that obstructed lawmakers from performing their constitutional duties.”

OBASA’S COURT ACTION AND POTENTIAL RETURN The crisis stemmed from Obasa’s removal by a majority of lawmakers on January 13, 2025, while he was on holiday in Atlanta, USA. He recently approached a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, challenging his ousting and seeking an accelerated hearing. Rumors of his possible return to the Assembly on February 18, 2025, fueled Monday’s security measures.

GOVERNANCE ADVISORY COUNCIL INTERVENES In response to the ongoing crisis, the Governance Advisory Council, the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State, announced plans to meet with President Tinubu to address the situation.

CALLS FOR JUSTICE The lawmakers ended Monday’s session with a unanimous vote of confidence in Speaker Meranda’s leadership. Despite the indefinite adjournment of plenary, tensions remain high as the Assembly and Lagos residents await further developments.

With democracy and legislative integrity at stake, all eyes are now on President Tinubu and the DSS leadership to provide clarity and ensure justice is served in this unfolding political drama.

Lagos Deserves Leaders Like You, UNILAG Tells Speaker Meranda

– institution pledges support for Lagos Speaker

A team from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has promised the institution’s support to the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda.

Professor Abraham Osinubi Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies of the institution, who led the delegation on a courtesy visit to the Speaker on Thursday, described Princess Meranda’s emergence as a triumph for vision and integrity.

“Your election is not just a personal victory; it is a triumph for vision, integrity, and commitment to the greater good.

“Lagos State stands at the crossroads of boundless opportunities and challenges, and we are confident that under your dynamic stewardship, the Assembly will enact transformative policies that will elevate the state to even greater heights.

“As a state renowned for its innovation, resilience, and leadership, Lagos needs leaders like you who possess the courage to envision a brighter future and the wisdom to bring that vision to life,” Professor Osinubi said.

The Dean said the Vice Chancellor of UNILAG, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, was excited that the institution had produced the first ever female Speaker of the State’s Assembly.

“As you assume this exalted office, we pray that divine wisdom, strength and clarity of purpose will guide your every decision. May you lead with compassion and fairness and may your tenure be marked by unity, progress, and prosperity for all citizens of Lagos State.

“We also pray that your work inspires future generations to recognise that leadership is a call to service, a sacred trust to uplift lives, and a platform to shape legacies of lasting impact.

“School of Postgraduate Studies, University of Lagos, remains committed to supporting visionary leaders like you by providing the intellectual resources needed to address the pressing challenges of our time. We look forward to witnessing the transformational strides your leadership will bring to Lagos State,” Professor Osinubi added.

Responding, Speaker Meranda said the visit was an encouragement and a challenge for her and the House to meet the yearnings of Lagosians through life-changing laws and motions.

Meranda, who had earlier emphasised her commitment to a happier Lagos, promised to continue to be a source of pride to UNILAG.

“I will definitely make you proud by the special grace of God. I will work to ensure that you see me as a source of pride to UNILAG,” she promised.

A lawmaker and alumnus of the institution, Hon. Lanre Afinni, recalled how UNILAG students made Nigeria proud during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, UNILAG students produced portable ventilators which assisted Lagosians.
For all that you have been doing for us, we say thank you,” Afinni said.
