Emmanuel Duron slams official at Edinburg High School football game- The Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District removed Edinburg High School from the football playoffs after one of its players attacked a referee during a game Thursday night.
Shortly after being ejected from the game against Pharr-San Juan-Alamo for multiple unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, senior defensive lineman Emmanuel Duron ran from the sideline area and slammed into the official, knocking him to the ground.
Duran was not handcuffed, but was escorted from the stadium by Edinburg police officers. The referee left the game and was evaluated for a concussion.
The 18-year-old Duron was charged with Class A misdemeanor assault at about 11 a.m. Friday during an arraignment at the Edinburg Municipal Court, according to The Monitor . He’s currently being held in county jail until he makes bond, which was set as a $10,000 cash surety bond.
On Friday morning, the school district had an emergency school board meeting where the decision was made to remove the entire team from the playoffs, even though Edinburgh’s 35-21 win on Thursday night had clinched a spot in the postseason.
“The district has decided to remove the Edinburg High School football team from the playoffs after an unexpected incident involving a student that occurred during a football game on December 3, 2020,” a statement from the school district reads. “We extend a sincere apology to the referee and his family. On behalf of the Edinburg CISD Board of Trustees and administration, we apologize to the athletes, staff, and our school community.
