Since assuming office in May 2019, Governor
Babajide Sanwo-Oluhas implemented a series of strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing Lagos State’s infrastructure, education, transportation, and overall quality of life. His administration’s efforts are encapsulated in the THEMES agenda, focusing on six key pillars: Traffic Management and Transportation, Health and Environment, Education and Technology, Making Lagos a 21st Century Economy, Entertainment and Tourism, and Security and Governance.
Transportation and Traffic Management
Recognizing transportation as a critical challenge, Governor Sanwo-Olu prioritized this sector by expanding the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. The administration introduced approximately 1,300 high-capacity buses, 1,000 medium-capacity buses, and 1,000 LAGRIde taxis to improve public transit. Additionally, the Oshodi-Abule-Egba BRT corridor was commissioned to enhance connectivity and reduce travel time for commuters.
Education and Technology
Under the EKOEXCEL program, the Sanwo-Olu administration has made significant strides in education by adding over 1,000 new classrooms and completing more than 1,097 projects in public schools. Teachers have been trained in modern teaching techniques and equipped with tablets to facilitate digital learning. These efforts have led to a notable improvement in student performance, with pass rates in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC) increasing from 42% to over 83%.
Health and Environment
The administration has focused on upgrading healthcare facilities and promoting environmental sustainability. Investments have been made in refurbishing hospitals and primary healthcare centers, alongside initiatives to improve waste management and reduce environmental pollution.
Sports Development
Lagos State has been recognized as Nigeria’s leading state in sports development for 2024. Under Governor Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, the state has invested in refurbishing sports facilities, hosted high-profile competitions, and driven innovative programs to promote sports among youth, contributing to the state’s reputation as a hub for athletic talent.
Security and Governance
To enhance security, the Sanwo-Olu administration has strengthened the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, providing resources for law enforcement agencies. The establishment of the Control and Command Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, has improved coordination among security agencies, contributing to a safer environment for residents and businesses.
Economic Growth and Infrastructure
Efforts to modernize the economy include investments in infrastructure projects such as road construction and urban renewal programs. These developments aim to attract investment, create jobs, and improve the standard of living for Lagosians.
Challenges and Criticisms
Despite these achievements, the administration has faced challenges, particularly in handling the October 2020 End SARS protests. The events at the Lekki Tollgate, where soldiers were reported to have fired upon protesters, drew significant criticism and highlighted the need for improved crisis management and communication.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s tenure has been marked by substantial progress in key sectors, aligning with the THEMES agenda’s objectives. While challenges remain, the administration’s commitment to transforming Lagos State into a 21st-century economy continues to drive its policies and initiatives.
